VWALTER B. TRUEMAN, 0F MATTON, ILLINOIS.
k@anniy specification of Lettersy Patent.
Patented Apr. 12, y1921.
Application filed January 16, 1920. vSerial No. 351,885.
To all whom t may com-em:
Be it known thatI, WALTER B. TnUnMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mattoon, in the kcounty of Coles and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; `and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will 'enable others skllled 1n the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.
This invention relates .to new and useful improvements in gates and more particularly to an operating means therefor, and has for its primary object the provision of means whereby the gate can be opened and closed from a point foreign thereto and without the necessity of a person getting out of a vehicle when nearing the gate and which operating means will automatically hold the gate closed until operated thereby obviating the danger of live stock opening the gate and also eliminates the use of a latch for the gate.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a gate of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a gate constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the gate in an open position,
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device illustrating the operating means extending to points foreign to the gate,
Fig. 4 is an end view of the device.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a post located at a driveway and the numeral 2 indicates a post spaced from the post 1 to form the gateway and is of hollow or slotted formation to slidably receive one end of a sllding gate 3. A post 4 is located adjacent the post 1 and is connected to said post 1 by reinforcing members 5. The posts 1 and 4 have journaled thereto grooved wheels yor rollers 6 which slidably support `the gate 3 so that said gate `canbe easily and convenlently moved toward and fromthe post 2 to 'open andclose the driveway.
Brackets 7 are carried by the post 1 and slidably support a Avertical bar-8 to which a block 9 is secured. A link 10 is pivoted to the block and normally extends downwardly 1n an inclined plane and has its free endy plvoted to the lower end of a downwardly depending extension 11. The extension 11 is secured to a link 12 which is pivoted at one end to a block 13 carried by the post 4 and has its other end pivoted to a link 14 which is in turn pivoted to an arm 15 at a point intermediate the ends of said arm. The arm 15 is normally disposed on an inclined plane and has its upper end pivoted to a block 16 carried by the postl and its other end carries a roller or wheel 17 slidably mounted between guide members 18 secured vertically to the gate 3, thus it will be seen that on upward movement of the bar 8, the link 10 moves upwardly with the same causing the links 14 and 12 to Swing upwardly on their pivots and the lower end of the arm 15 to move rearwardly pulling the gate to an open position. When the bar 8 is in its lowermost position, the links 12 and 14 are in horizontal alinement with each other so that if a pull is made directly on thegate 3, said links will prevent the gate from opening as their pivotal connection will not swing upwardly.
A transversely extending head 19 is se-y cured to the upper end of the post 1 and has pivoted thereto levers 20 which extend a short distance from the post and have one of their ends connected to links -21 which are in turn pivoted to the blocks 9 secured to the bar 8 so that upon swinging the other ends of the levers downwardly the bark 8 will be elevated to open the gate. Handles 22 are secured to the free ends of said levers so that they can be readily gripped for swinging said levers in either direction on their pivots for opening and closing the ate. g Extension members 24 are slidably mounted on the gate and are adapted to extend beyond one end thereof for the purpose of closing a foot passage formed adjacent the post 2. A dog 25 is pivoted to the extensions 24 and is adapted to be swung in engagement with a keeper 26 for locking the extensions in a rearward direction when not desiring them to close the foot passage. While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is z* A gate comprising a pair of connected supporting posts, a gate mounted on said posts for movement in a horizontal path, a vertical actuating bar slidably mounted on one of the posts, oppositely extending operating means connected to said bar, an arm slidably connected to the gate and pivoted to one of the last named posts and normally occupying an upwardly inclined position, a pair of pivotally connected links pivoted to the other post andto the said slidable arm at a point intermediate the ends of the latter, said links normally lying in parallelism with the gate and in the same horizontal plane to prevent opening of the-gate by a direct pull thereon, a downwardly extending extension on one of said links, an operating link pivoted to the lower end of the extension and to the vertically slidable actuating bar at apoint above the gate for causing operation of the first links by the bar to open and close the'gate.
In testimony whereof I aiiX my signature A in presence of two witnesses.
