Be it known that l, J A Mns A. TERRY, being a citizen of the United States of America,
and resident of Pocahontas, Pocahontas` county, Iowa, have invented a new and use ful Portable Cabinet-Lavatory, of which thek following is a specification; y
The object of thisv invention is to provide a lavatory and toilet device of cabinet form" adapted to be carriedin a suitable manner in or on a vehicle', as for instance on the running board of an automobile.
A further object of this invention is to provide a cabinet adapted to contain a supply of water and of toilet accessories and also being equipped with a wash "basin adapted to be contained vwithin the'` cabinet and moved to convenient position for use at times.
hereinafter set forth, pointed out'jin my claims and illustrated by the accompanying j ing a maximum larea of the shelf and yet i permitting-it to enter the yhousing as the door drawing, in which# Figure 1 is a si improved cabinet lavatory mounted on the running board of a vehicle, the door of the cabinet being in open position. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, a portion of the cabinet being shown in section. F ig. 3 is a cross scctioii on an enlarged scale, the door being in closed position.- Fig. 4 is an end elevation and Fig. 5 a side elevation, partly in section, illustrating means for mounting a roller. v
In the construction ofthe device as shown the numeral 10 designates generally a housing, which may be made of sheet metal and of any suitable size. At each end the housing 10 is provided with a base flange V11 extending outwardly in a horizontal plane and said flanges are adapted to be secured as by bolts 12 to a suitable support 13, suoli as the ruiming board of a motor vehicle. The outer side of the housing 10 is formed with a relatively largeY opening 14, preferably comprising the greater part of that side of the housing farthest from the body of the vehicle when the devicevis mounted as above suggested. The opening 14 is closable by a door 15 pivotally secured at one side inargin by hinges 16 to the housing. A gasket or cushioning pad 17 is mounted on the inner face of the door 15 and extends around the margin thereof and said gasket is adapted to contact marginal portions of the Y Y. Specification of LettersiPatent. 'y Patented Apr, Application filed March 20, 1920. Serial No. 367,424.
My invention consists in theconstruction, arrangement and combination of elements de elevation showing my opening14 when the door is in closed position, in order to ,form a tight closure' and also to prevent rattlin A water tank 18 is rigidly mounted in t e upper rear portion ofthe housingl 10, that is to say on that side of the housing nearest to the vehicle body, and' said tank preferably `extends longitudi# nally about'one-halfthe transverse dimen sion thereof. The water tank 18may be filled through a nozzle 19 extending through the top ofthe housing and closable by a cap 20. A drain cock `21 is mounted in the lower portion of the water tank 18, preferably on the side nearest the opening 14, by means of Xihich V`water may be withdrawn from the tan f A shelfy 22 is fixed to andl carried by the inner lower portionof the door 15 and when saidl door is in closed position said shelf oc` cupies a position within the housing 1 0 par allel withand just abov'ethe bottom of said housing. vThe shelf 22 may be'of substantially segmental form in plan, thus providis'swung through an arc to closed position.
23 beneath the cock 21 of the water tank to y n facilitate supplying said basin with water. The basin 23 is `formed with a drain opening in its bottoni normally closed by a stop per 24.
A towel roller 25 is mounted longitudinally of the upper portion of the housing 10, in the space between the tank 18 and the front of the housing and said roller is adapted to carry a supply of tissue toweling such as 26 in roll form.. A rack or pocket 27 is mounted in one corner portion of the housing 10, beneaththe tank 18, and is adapted to contain towels such as 28, wash rags or other toilet accessories.
A number of spring clips 29 are secured Ato the inner surface of the door 15, above the plane of the basin 23,and said clips are adapted to support toilet articles such as a This device provides a very convenient accessory for cross-country travelers and tourists, furnishing as it does a convenient means for carrying a supply of clean Water for washing` purposes, together with towels, soap and other toilet articles.v Then traveling the door is kept in closed position as by means or' a latch device 35 and the toilet articles and wash basin are, thus protected from dust and dirt. Then it is desired to use the lavatory device the door is unlatched and opened slightly to permit the entrance of a persons arni to open the water cock 21 and permit water to flow from the tank 18 to the wash basin 23. Then this is done the door is opened farther so that Vthe basin 23 is easily accessible for washing purposes, after which the basin may be emptied by removing the stopper 24 and allowing the water to flow to the ground. Then the door is opened the towels and other toilet articles are within easy reach.
The towel roller 25 preferably is carried by apertured ears or clips 36 mounted on inner surfaces of the end walls of the housing 10, said ears or clips being olset inwardly from the walls between their ends and having their apertures 87 engaged by studs 3S in the ends of the roller, as shown in Figs. l and 5.
1 claim as my invention- 1. A device of the class described, comprising a portable housing formedwith a relatively large opening in one side wall, a door hinged on a vertical axis at one side margin to said housing and adapted to close said opening, a water tank being formed in the' upper portion of said housing, said water tank being formed with a drain cock on its lower side, a horizontal shelf fixed to the inner side of said door, and a lavatory basin carried by said shelf and adapted to be moved to a position beneath said drain cock and to be inclosed Within the housing when the door is shut and being supported in a position for use outside or said housing when the door` is in open position, said vbasin remaining in horizontal position irre` spective of the position of the door relative to the housing.
2. A device of the class described, coinprisingl a housing formed with a relatively large opening in one side wall, a door hinged on a vertical axis at one margin to said housing and adapted to close said openingI a Water tank being formed in the upper portion of said housing, said water tank being provided with a drain cock on its lower side, a horizontal shelf fixed to the lower portion of the inner side of said door, a lavatory basin carried by said shelf and adapted to be moved to a position within the housing and beneath the drain cock of said tank vwhen the door is in closed position and adapted to be moved to a position for use outside of said housing when the door is in open position, said-basin being formed with a drain opening iii its bottom, and a stopper normally closing said drain opening.
Signed at Pocahontas, in the county oilv Pocahontas and State of Iowa, this 11th day of March, 1920.
