ASSIGNORS TO BLOOM, GERBER AND PETER-MAN, A PARTNERSHIP CON- SISTING OF HARRY BLOOM, TEA-XV GERBER, AND JOE PITERMAN.
ARTICLE or FURNITURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
latented Apr. 12, 1921.
Application filed August 14, 1920. Serial No. 403,516.
To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRY BLOOM and Max GERBER, both citizens of the United States, and Jon PITERIVIAN, a citizen of Bussia, all residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Articles of Furniture, of which the following is a specification,
This invention relates to an article of furniture equipped with supporting legs, such, for instance, as a table, chair, or stool, and is concerned more particularly with a construction thereof in which metal, preferably in sheet form, is utilized for the most part. For its objects this invention aims to produce in an inexpensive manner articles of furniture which are strong, ornamental and useful to a high degree.
An embodiment of this invention as practised in the making of a stool is exhibited in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the seat portion;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 3 is an elevation thereof; and
Fig. 4c is a transverse section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In the following specification, which refers to a stool as a suggestive embodiment of time invention, 1t should be borne in mind that, in so far as tables, chairs, or other furniture articles are constructed with parts corresponding therewith, the descriptive terms herein used are also applicable thereto.
Our invention comprises a metallic top A supported upon a plurality of metallic legs 13. As shown, the top is circular in form with a central opening 5, and is further provided with a marginal flange 6, preferably depending. Secured to the top is a seat 7 which may, if desired, be of Wood. This seat is also provided with a central opening 8 over which is stretched any approved material 9, such as cane, leather, etc. The under side of the seat may be appropriately recessed to receive the top A, screws 10 being suggested as a means for securing one part to the other.
Each of the legs B is preferably channeled, as best shown in Fig. 2, so as to provide a center wall 11 from which diverge side Walls 12, Each of these legs at its upper end is provided'with a plurality of cars, one designated as 13 being bent from an extension of the center wall, and the others designated as 1 1- being bent from the side wall extensions. Each of these'latter cars, it will be noted, is appropriately rounded at the corner which lies proximate to the marginal flange 6, so that the leg may ornamentation, as well as for strength, we
form a head or rib 17 in each brace for the major portion of its length. each brace is secured to the proximate side wall 12 of the leg as by means of rivets 18. It will be understood that, in place of individual braces, one extending between each two legs, a single brace bent to connect with all the legs may be utilized.
It is to be noted that the component parts of the furniture articles that are constructed in accordance with this invention may be very simply formed through the use of appropriate bending tools or dies, and that their assembly may be expeditiously effected. Not only is the resulting construction strong, but it is also ornamental so as to adapt the article for use in many different places. iv providing channel legs, each having a side wall in substantial alinement,
with another side wall on the adjacent leg, the braces may be easily secured in place with their ends rested squarely against the legs, as shown best in Fig. 1, thereby facilitating a tight and rigid connection.
We claim:
1. A furniture article comprising, in combination, a circular wooden seat in which is a central opening spanned by a seating material, there being formed on the under side of the seat an annular recess which lies adjacent the central opening, and a support on which the seat is mounted comprising a circular metal top piece having a downwardly depending marginal flange At its ends adapted to fit within the recess upon the under side of the seat with the marginal flange entirely received therewithin, means extending through the top piece and into the wooden seat to connect the one to the other, three metal legs connected with the top piece, each leg being channeled to providea center wall from which diverge two side walls, and braces secured to each of said side walls adapted to interconnect the legs below the top piece, substantially as de scribed.
2. A furniture article comprising, in combination, a wooden seat in which is a central opening covered by a seating material, there being formed on the under side of the seat a recess which lies adjacent the opening, and a support on which the seat is mounted comprising a metal top piece adapted to fit within the recess upon the under side of the seat, means extending through the top piece and into the wooden seat to connect the one to the other, a plurality of metal legs each channeled to provide a center wall from which diverge two side walls, the upper end of each leg being formed with ears extending laterally, one from the center wall and one from each of the side walls, all of the ears lying in a common plane, a connection between each of the ears and the metal top piece, and braces interconnecting the legs below the top piece, substantially as described.
