AUGUST HARTMEYER, OF LOS' ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
CURTAIN-ROD.
To all whom it may czmcem Be it known that I, AUGUST HARTMEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles 3 be readily attached to the inside of the window frame, to the inner side of the side members of the window frame, or to the window sash.
Another object of my invention is to provide a window curtain rod on which a curtain may be readily hung from which the curtain may be readily removed without taking down the rod.
A further object of my invention is to provide a window curtain rod constructed so that the curtain may be swung to one side of the window out of the way thereof, so that the window may be cleaned.
My invention is illustrated in the annexed drawing forming a part of the specification, in which:
Figure 1 is an inside view of'a window with my curtain rod attached to the inside of the window frame with the window curtain mounted thereon in the usual manner.
Fig. 2 is an inside perspective view of a window with my curtain rod mounted on the inside of the frame thereof, the curtain being shifted upon a portion of the rod and the curtain swung to one side of the window out of the way thereof, so that the window may be cleaned.
Fig. '3 is an inside illustration of the upper portion of a window with my curtain rod mounted .on the inner side of the side members of the window frame.
Fig. 4 is an inside illustration of the upper portion of a window with my curtain rod mounted on the inside of the upper window sash.
Fig. 5 is a perspective vlew dow curtain pole.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of one end of my window curtain rod.
. My curtain rod includes a pair of angle brackets 1 and 2, a telescoping curtain rod 3 comprising two end sections 4 and 5, and an intermediate sleeve section 6 which teleof my win- Specification of Lettersllsatent. Patented APL 12 1921: Application filed June 7, 1920; Serial No, 387,271. 1
scopes on the end sections 4 and 5; each bracket, 1 and 2, has a depending vertical member 7 and a horizontal member 8. Each of the end sections, 4 and 5, may be made of metal tubing, into the outer end of which extends a stiff plate spring 9; the end of said sections being flattened upon said spring plate, and the inner end of said spring plate being bent upwardly at 10 to engage the wall of the sections to prevent the plate spring from belng pulled out of the end of the sectlons. The outer end of the sections 4 and 5 rest upon the end of the horizontal members 8 of the brackets 1 and 2 and are pivoted to said horizontal bracket members by pivots 11 and 12 which, respectively, extend through the outer end of said sections and the spring plate 9 therein and through said bracket members 8 of the brackets 1 and 2,2
the ends of the pivot being headed over the ends of the sections 4 and 5 and under the ends of the bracket members 8 to hold the pivots in position in the ends of said sections and said bracket members. The members 7 of the brackets 1 and 2 are provided with screw holes 13 to receive screws for attaching said brackets to the inside of the window trimming, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to the inner side of side members of the window frame, as shown in Fig. 3, or to the inside of the window sash, as shown in Fig. 4.
In order to place a curtain on the rod the section 6 is telescoped entirely onto one of the sections 4 or 5, for example, the section 4, and the sections 4' and- 5 swung ,in- I wardly away from each other. The hems of the curtain are then slipped over the rod sections 6 and 4 and the section '5, as shown in Fig. 2, the sections 6 and 4 and the section 5 swung inwardly into alinement with each other, the section. 6 telescoped partly on section 4 and partly on section 5, and the hems of the'curtain distributed over the three sections 4, 6 and 5 of the rod as shown in Fig. 1.
When it is desired to clean the .window, the hem of one section of the curtain is shifted onto one of the sections 4 or 5, for.
, of brackets, a telescoping rod comprising three tubular sections, a fiat plate spring extending into the outer end of each end section, the inner end of each plate spring being bent to prevent it from pulling out of the section, pivots extending through the 10 outer ends of said end sections and through the plate spring therein and through said brackets respectively, the intermediate rod section adapted to be telescoped over both of said end sections or over one only of said 15 end sections to permit the end sections to be swung horizontally.
AUGUST HARTMEYER.
