UNITED EDGAR O. MUNGER, F GENEVA, OHIO.
BEN CI'I-VISE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 29, 1921.
Application filed July 6, 1920. Serial No. 394,205.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR O. MUNGER, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Geneva, in the county of Ashtabula and lltate of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Bench-Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vises adapted to be secured to Workbenches for the use of carpenters and others; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front or plan view of a vise constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is an end View of the same.
A supporting plate 8 is provided, and may be secured to any work bench or other suitable support, and arranged either vertically or horizontally. A jaw 4% is secured to the plate 8, and it has a small lip 5 at its outer edge. A. rod 6 is provided with a row oi holes? arranged longitudinally in one end portion of it, and 8 is a pin which proj cots from the plate 3 and engages with any one of the holes 7. A nut 9 is provided for retainiiuy; the rod 6 on the pin. A jaw 10 is pivoted to the tree end portion of the rod 6 by a pin 12. The jaw 10 has a lip 14 along its outer edge, and it has projection 15 at one end which projects toward the aw 4.
The vise is adapted to hold any article having a tapering end portion 16. The tapering portion is thrust between the two vise jaws with one end of it bearing against the projection 15. The article is clamped by moving it or the pivoted vise jaw so that both jaws bear hard against the opposite sides of the end portion of the article. The rod or bar 6 is set on the pivot pin so as to hold articles of different size between the jaws. The article is unclamped by pulling it forcibly in a direction to separate the vise jaws, or by striking the projection 15 a light blow with a hammer.
hat I claim is:
1. A vise, comprising a supporting plate, a vise aw secured to the plate, a rod having one end portion pivoted to the plate, and a second vise jaw pivoted to the free end portion of the said rod and adapted to clamp an article against the first said vise jaw.
2. A vise, comprising a supporting plate, a vise jaw secured to the plate and having a projecting lip at its outer edge, a rod having one end portion pivoted to the plate, and a second vise jaw pivoted to the free end portion of the said rod and having a. lip along its outer edge and a projection at one end which projects toward the first said In testimony whereof T: have affixed my signature.
EDGAR O. MUNGEB.
