UNITED STATEEi WILLIAM FELDMANN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
INDEX-CARD TAB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 29, 1921.
Application filed May 24, 1920. Serial No. 383,899.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM FELDMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Index-Card Tabs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to index cards which are provided with a tab for holding an indication slip or label, and its object is to provide a strong and durable tab which can be readily applied to the card, which is inexpensive to manufacture, and which will bear repeated handling without the card to which it is applied being liable to be torn or otherwisemutilated.
The object stated is attained by means of a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming .a part of this specification.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is an elevation of the device, and Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged sections on gie lines 22 and 33, respectively, of
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the index card to which the tab which is the subject matter of the present application for patent is applied.
The tab is constructed of a single piece of sheet metal, and it consists of a base portion 6 and a wing 7 projecting therefrom. The base is considerably longer than the width of the wing so that it projects beyond the ends thereof. At the top of the projecting end portions of the base are flexible tongues 8. The device is placed on the face of the card adjacent to its top edge and the tongues are bent over said edge to engage the back of the card. This leaves the wing 7 projecting from the top edge of the card to form a holder for an indicating slip or label in a manner to be presently described. The base 6 is also formed with spurs 9 which are driven into the card 5 and clenched on the back thereof. The tongues 8 are pressed inwardly so that the card 5 is firmly gripped between the same and the base 6, which, with the s urs 9, rigidly unites'the device to the card so that it cannot become detached therefrom, and re eated handling of the device and the car will not result in tearing or mutilation of the card.
The card 5 is formed with an integral tab 1( projecting from its top edge, and the device will be so positioned on the card that this tab comes behind the wing 7. At the outer edge of the wings. bend 11 is made around the corresponding edge of the tab so that these parts are firmly united.
The indicating slip B is placed between the wing 7 and the tab 10, the latter form- 1ng a backing for the slip, and the former having an opening 12 to display the inscription on the slip. The slip is inserted from one end of the wing, it being understood that there is suflicient space between the wing and the tab to form a pocket to accommodate the slip. This spacing of the wing from the tab is obtained by making the main portion of the wing offset from its inner and outer edge portions. The edge of the wing where the slip is inserted is however spaced from the tab to permit entry of the slip, and the opposite edge is bent down into contact with the tab to close up the space and thus prevent the slip from emerging at this end of the device. The spacing of the wing and the tab is very slight so that the slip is frictionally held therebetween and prevented from accidentally dropping out. The slip is however readily removable so that it may be changed as required.
The tab may be made of transparent celluloid where the use of metal is to be avoided, or where written or printed matter otherwise concealed by the tab is to be rendered visible. If transparent celluloid is used, the opening 12 need not be made, thereby reducing the cost of manufacturing the tab.
I claim:
The combination with a card having a projecting tab at one of its edges; of a holder comprising a base plate fastened to the card and having a projecting wing lying above the tab and having at its outer end a bend around the correspondin edge of the tab to clamp the same, and said wing having a portion which is spaced from the tab to form a pocket, the aforesaid base plate being wider than the wing to project beyond the ends thereof, and said projecting portions of the plate having bends over the aforesaid edge of the card to clamp the same.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WILLIAM FELDMANN.
