Difficulty is experienced in the operation ofhydraulic elevators, due to the creeping of the elevator car when the control lever is in neutral position. Thls difficulty is particularly noticeable when the car is brought to astop at a floor. The present invention contemplates the provision of means for moving the controllever from neutral position in a direction to counteractthe creeping of the car, and thereby holdthe car station-1 ary,'and this means isthrown 1nto operation by the unlocking of an elevator shaft door.
The elevator shaft is provided at each floor with a lock 2 which is engaged by a bolt 3 carried by the shaft door 4,. for bolding the door locked in the closed position. Thls lock is preferably constructed as shown in the co ending application of H. G. Ran:- dallyserial No. 283,852, filedin the Patent Oflice on March 20, 1919. Each lock is provided with an actuating lever 5 projecting from the lock casing and adapted to be rocked to release the bolt 3, by the shoe 6, carried by the elevator car and movable into position to actuate the lever 5 by the pedal :7. Depression of the pedalmoves the shoe into position to actuate the lever 5, and the pedal is usually depressed as the elevator approaches a floor at which passengers are to betaken on or discharged, so that the door is unlocked as the elevator car moves into position. Depending from the car area pair of vertical guides 24, upon which is disposed a vertically movable carriage 25, the carriage being provided with rollers 26 engaging the guides andbeing provided with a counten weight 27. 1. The combination with an elevator shaft provided with doors, of an elevatorcar in said shaft, a hydraulic motor for movlng i said car, aleverjfo'r controlling the operation ofsaid motor, locks forholding said doorsclosed, means operative by a movement ofzthe car for moving said lever, and

The combination with an elevator sha l't provided with doors, of locks for holding the doors closed, an elevator car in said shaft, a hydraulic motor for moving said car, a motor controlling device, a vertically mo able carriage on the car connected to said device, a fixed vertically disposed member in said shaft normally slidably engaged by said carriage, and means operative by the unlocking of a door for clamping said carriage to said fixed vertical member.

The combination with an elevator sha it provided with doors, of locks for holding the doors in closed position, an elevator ear in said shaft, a hydraulic motor for moving said car, a motor control device, a fixed vertically disposed member in said shaft, a vertically movable carriage on said car connected to said control device and normally out of tight engagement with said vertically disposed member, means on the carriage adapted to clamp said member, and means operative by the unlocking of a. door for moving said clamping means to engage said member.
6. The combination with an elevator shaft provided with doors, of locks for holding said doors in the closed position, an elevator car in said shaft, a hydraulic motor for moving said car, a motor control device arried by the car, a vertically movable carriage arranged on said car and connected to said control device, a fixed vertical element in said shaft associated with said carriage, means for clamping said carriage to said element, electromagnetic means controlling the actuation of the clamping means, and means operative by the unlockingof a door for actuating said electromagnetlc means.
7. The combination with an elevator shaft ll-T provided. with doors, of locks for holding said doors in the closed position, an elevator car 1n said shaft, a hydraulic motor for moving said car, a control device for said motor, at vertically movable carriage on the car connected to said control device, a vertically 'disposedfixed cable in said shaft with which said carriage normally makes free sliding contact, a cylinder on said carriage, a piston in said cylinder, meansconnected to the piston for clamping the carsaid cylinder, a solenoid for moving said valve, a circuit for seidsolenoid andmeens operative by the unlocking of a door for closing the solenoid circuit.
