APPARATUS FOROPERATING LEVATOR-DOORS.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, FRED S. PAYNE, a citiin the county of Sufiolkand State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Operating Elevator-Doors, of whichthe following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to that class of dooroperating devicesinwhich the mechanical. means for opemngand closing the door are controlled by an electric circuit which is 7 made and broken by the movement of the ator.
My objects have been, first, to provide an apparatus which shall allow the door to remain normally closed unless the elevator-car best'ationary at such doorway; second, to provide means controlled by the operator of'the car for opening and closing the door; third, to provide means for causing the door to close upon the movement of the car away from such door. I accomplish these objects by the means hereinafter specified and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

The particular form of construction of the valve anti-tether mechanical connection between armature 11 and door 1 is not essential to myinverttion, andl make no s ecific claim therefon. Any type of valve w 'ch will al-, low of a reciprocating action being imparted to a iston' and any suitable form of connection etween such piston and the elevator-v door may be adopted, That shown herein is it simple in construction and operation and has the advantage of causing door '1 to remain closed and by using a rule-joint in bar 20 locked until magnet '10 be energized.

Wire 22 connects with magnets 10 and 1.0 by branch wires 22?. Wires 24 and 24, respectively, connect contact-plates 3 and 3 with magnets 10 land 10.- Wire 23 connects with late 8, and plate 7 is connected with p'ushutton 9 by wir25 Wire 26 connects said button with shoe 4.
When valve 12 is in normal position, the
operating fluid willenter cylinder 18 through pipes 13 and 15, thereby forcing piston 19 intoiposition shownv in Fig. 2 and door 1 IIO will be closed. Upon the stopping of the elevatorcar before a door, plate 3 and shoe 4 or plate 3 and shoe 4, as the case may be, will be in contact, as will also be plates 7 and 8. If push-button 9 be then pressed, the electric circuit will be completed by means of the Wires and electrical connections hereinbefore described, the roper magnet will become energized, thereby actuating lever 16, which causes valve 12 to operate in reverse action, piston 19 will rise, and the door will be opened. It the electric circuit be broken at push-button 9 or by the starting of the elevator-car and the consequent disengagement of plates 7 and 8 or shoe 4 and plates 3 or 3, lever 16 will be returned to its normal position, as hereinbefore described, and the door will be closed. Should the car not stop at any doorway 'or the operator fail to press button 9, all doors will remain closed.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is g 1. The combination with an elevator-car and its operating mechanism, including the operating-lever, and a door, of a lurality of contacts adapted to engage each other by reason of the movement of said car, a contact on said lever, a contact ada ted to be engaged by the-contact on said ever whenever said lever is in position to stop; said car, a push-button, a magnet, means whereby said contacts, push-button and magnet are electrically connected, and means controlled by said contacts, push-button and magnet when so connected for opening said door. 2. The combination with an elevator-car audits operating-lever, of a movable contact actuated by said car, a stationary contact adapted to be'engaged by said movable contact, acontact on saidlever, a contact adapted to be engaged by the contact on said lever, a push-button and a ma et, all being within 11 electric circuit, a va ve operated by said magnet and a motor controlled b said valve. 3., In eombinatibn. with an e evator-door in an elevatonshaft and an elevator-ear with its operating-lever, a contact in said shaft, a contact on said car adapted to engage the contact in said shaft, a contact on said lever, a contact adapted to be engaged by the contact on said lever Whenever said lever is in positionto stop said car, a push-button in said car and a magnet, said contacts, pushbutton and magnet being electrically con nected, a valve operated by said magnetyand a motor in mechanical connection with said door, and controlled by said valve.
4. In an apparatus of the class described,

In an apparatus of the classs described, an elevator-car with its operating-lever, a plurality of doors, normally held closed, a stationary contact adjacent to each door, a contact carried by said car and adapted to enga e the contact adjacent to the door to Whic said car is opposite, a contact on said operating-lever, a contact engaged by the contact on said lever whenever said lever is in position for said car to stop, a push-button, an electromagnet on each floor adjacent to its corresponding door, a valve on. each floor controlled by said magnet, a motor on each floor controlled by said valve, means connecting said motor and door to which it is adjacent, and an electric circuit connecting said contacts, magnets and push-button; as and for the purposes hereinbelore set forth.

The combination with an elevator-car, its operating-lever and door in elevatorshaft, of a contact engaged by a contact on said car Whenever said car is opposite to said door, a contact engaged by a contact on said lever whenever said car is stationary, an electromagnet, means controlled by the operator of the car for completing the electric circuit and energizing said magnet, and means controlled by said'magnet for opening and closing said door.

operating-lever, a door, a contact carried by said car, a contact engaged by the contact on said car-when said car is adjacent to said door, a contact on said lever, a contact enaged by said contact on said lever when said ever is in position for said car to stop, a ma net, means controlled by the operator of said car for completim an electric circuit through said contacts and magnet when said car is opposite said door, and means for causing said door to open when said electric circuit is completed.
