GATE-ACTUATING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented N 0v. 16, 1920.
Application filed August 25, 1915. Serial No. 47,216.
Toledo, Lucas county, Ohio, a citizen of the United States of America, have invented new and useful Gate-Actuating Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to actuating means for permitting or intercepting passage at a ways This invention has utility when incorporated in doors or gates as in elevator cars and wells.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary 'sectionof an elevator well, with a car therein, showing an embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail of the door operating connector in disconnected position;
Fig. 3 shows the connector on a larger scale and in connecting position; and
'Fig. 4 is a wiring diagram of the control connections as adapted to a three phase alterriating electric current power supply.
The elevator well 1 has communicating therewith thediiferentlandings or ways 2 as closed by the doors or gates 3, vertically slidable in the guide 4.
Mounted for travel in the well 1 vis the elevator car 5 having connected thereto the operating device for the gates comprising the line 6 extending about the guide pulleys 7, 8, in the bottom of the well, thence up the Well 1, over the pulley 9, under the fixed pulley 10, and over the movable pulley 11 reciprocable in the guide 12, mounted on the upper floor or landing 13. The line 6 in passing about the movable pulley 11 forms an adjustable bight which varies the efi'ectivelength of the line inits extension to the slack take-up connector 14 on the gate 15 traveling with the car 5.
gate 15 in its upward movement relatively to the car 5 for opening, is slidable" in the guides 16.
WVith the car 5 at a landing' 2 and gates closed, the controller or switch 17 on the car 5 may be shifted to close the circuit with the line 18, for energizing the solenoid 19, as the circuit is completed through line 20, terminal 21 engaging the ,motor driven contact plate 22, passing therefrom through the contact or terminal 23, and in one-of the circuits while the car is at rest line 24,
past switch 25 held closed by the cam plate 26 on the door 15 when closed. F or complcting the circuit in another phase of this three phase alternating current flow from the 3 plate 22 would be by the line 43 to the line 44. If the door or gate 15 be open,the power control' circuit is broken. Thus there is energized the solenoid 27 to close the switch 28 thereby closing the'circuit to the elevator operating motor power supply lines 29. Accordingly the elevatorhmotor may be operated only when the gate is closed with the plate 22 in position for energizing the solenoid 27. 'This circuit from the coil 27 of the solenoid extends to the supply line 30. The supply line 31 has its circuit clear through the coil or solenoid 32, so the circuit is completed to the switch 17. Shell 33 houses the coil 32.
Throwing of the solenoid 19 operates the reversible motor 34 for winding the drum 35 having attached thereto the line 36'extending over the pulley 37 for lifting the pulley 11 in the guide 12 for lengthening the bight in the line 6, thereby reducing the effective length of the line6, and pulling the gate 15 up, or 'to open position. This operation of the winding drum 35 carries with it the plate22 which is mounted to rotate therewith. as shown in applicants Patent 1,180,600 of Apr..25, 1916. As the gate 15 moves upward the switch 25 is opened, thereby breaking the circuit through the coil 27 and opening the switch 28 to cut. out the driving motor for the car 5.
\Vith the gate 15 fully open, for closing the gate the switch 17 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 4, to connect the line 38, solenoid 39, line 40, terminal 41 contact plate 22, terminal 42, line 43 and supply line 44. As the plate 22 travels in the closing'operation, it comes to position for connecting the line 24 in circuit in order that the solenoid 27 may be energized. This energizing of the solenoid may occur by completion of the circuit from the plate 22 in one phase, sayby the line 43. Throwing of the solenoid 39 operates the-motor 34 in the reverse direction from the pperation by solenoid 19, and the drum 35 is driven toslack the line 36 and allow the pulley 11 to shorten the bight in the line 6, permitting v motor 34. This energizing circuit through tending ast the pulley 46 to the counterweight 4 to neutralize the weight of the operated parts and thus reduce the working load on the motor 34.
As thus described there is a power device connected to the car effective whenthe gate 4 on the car is closed to open suchgate and close the gate, independently of travel of the car.
For handlingthe gates at the well, the same device without additional control means is readily adapted. The switches 48 in the line 24 are maintained closed by the cams 49 on the several closed gates 3 grouped in the well 1 for operation by the gate op-., erating device. Accordingly throwing the switch 17 to the line 18 closes the circuit through the solenoid 19 for starting the the coil 32 in the shell or housing '33, attracts thearmature 50 against the resistance of spring'51, and compresses the spring 52 the socket 55 of the gate -3 at the way or landing at which thecar 5 is stopped. Thus, when the motor 34 commences its drive, the
gate 3 at such way or landing 2 is, engaged for simultaneous shifting or opening with the car carried gate 15. Ha gate-3 be open this operation of the car by its power device may not occur, for the circuit in line 24 is broken.
I With-the two gates. 3, 15 open, they may be readily closed by shifting the switch or controller 17 toline 38 to reverse the motor 34. The adjustable connector 14 permits maintenance of the gate sockets 55 in registry therewith at the landings, so the energized connector 50 through its head 54 may properly engage. Upon deenergization, of
coil 32, which occurs as the switch arm 17 is brought to central disconnected position, the spring 51 rocks the connector away from the solenoid coil"'3'2, and through the bolt central of the spring 52 is effective to withdraw the head 54 from the socket 55 H and there is 'no interference with the well gates3 in any subsequent travel of the car '5 until a gate operation is desired and the controller 17 moved to, the line 18. The
switch 17 for operating the gate 15 when released, breaks the circuit through the solenoid 19 and coil 32, and thus these operating coils use current only during the actual travel of the gates, even though the gates may be left open at a landing.
In the event the gates 3 serve as fire doors or as safety guards against a stampede, the leaving of the gates openmay be safe-. guarded against by pivoting the head 54 on the connector arm 53, connecting at a mechanical advantage thereto the link 56 eXtending to a temperature releasable connection or fusible link 57.
The gate operating device. herein is simto swingthe arm 53 having the head 54. into asaemc ple for installation in awide range of wells or shafts with a minimum of special fittings, connections or operating parts, and may be adjusted readily for effective power control with interlocking checks not only against movement of the car froma floor with the door or doors open, but against opening the doors away from a floor level, and against fire risk of leavingthe doors open.
The cup ofsocket 55 holds the head 54 againstrelease when coil 32-is 'deenergiaed and the gate load is on the head while with the gate load off the head 54 the spring 51 service to disconnect the connector from the gate 3; V i
The moving of the doors by the power means when the car is away from the floor gate and movable to operate'the gate independently of car travel and driving means for the gate operating device as to which driving means the car may travel, there being a driving means control on the car for controllin said gate operating device.
