Specification of Lettersllatenti Application led yOctobert), 1919. `Serial No. 334,285.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, BERTHoLD A. BAER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of YManhattan7 State of New York,
Another vobject-is to provide means.
whereby the sealingcompound may. flowl toward theoutside of the closure, where the excess compound may be. collected'.v and readily removed without affecting the artistic appearance ofthe. casket.
- A still further object is t'o` provide certain improvements inthe form, construction and arrangement of the parts whereby the above named and other. objects may be e'ectively attained. J A
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanyingV drawing, in whichA v Figure l represents Ya side elevation of a burial casket having my improved sealing means applied thereto.v
' Fig.2 represents an enlarged detail sec,-
tion showinga portion ofthe casket and its cover in position to'be applied thereto;
Fig. 3 represents asimilarview. with the cover and ybody locked andV yhermetically'l sealed, and A fFig. 4 represents a modified form .of casket having itssealing member secured to the woodvlining.
In the form shown in Figs. 1 to3 inelusive,A the body portion of the casket` is denoted by l, the .moldingirby 2 and the inwardly disposed rim by 3, allofwhich are formed integral. ,l
'The rim 3 is provided in its upper face with a continuous groove 4 extending around the sides and ends of the body, the outer wall V5 of which groove is undercut. The inner wall 6 of the groove projects .upwardly: above the f. upper" facefoflthe rim to in the city. andV have invented a new and Y useful Improvement 1n Sealing `Means fork form a seat 7 for the cover 8. The cover 8V is provided with Va continuous depending flange 9 the outer wall 10 of which is inclined inwardly'and upwardly and approximately parallel tothe wall 5 of Vthe rim 3, so that when' the cover is placedv in posi# tion upon the rim the' flange Patentea'Manm, 1921...
9 will enter thel groove .4, leavlng the lower edge of the in` clinedlwall 10 spaced a suflicient distance 'i to pass the upper edge of the wall of theA groove 4, prior to the positioning ofY the cover,` into 'which' compoundthe flange 9 is v 65. swung cODflPound 11 is inserted .in the-- securely embedded. vTo prevent. the com! pound from being forced intothe interior of the casket when displaced bythe flange, I locate vthin strips 12of iexibleymaterial, such as'sheet metal, along the .inner wall 6 of thek groove4, in position to' be engaged by the cover, So that as .the coveriis brought downwardly toward the vrim the upper edge of the strips will be curled over makingV a tight joint at `the point .where the strips engage the flange, and thus prevent the'compound from vflowing .towardor over the seatV 7 as shown in Fig. 3. To allow the excess compound 'to' flow vfreely'r awaylfrom the strips, I provide the llange 9 with a series of arched passages 13, in its "lower edge, through whichV passages the compound ymay pass. :The surplus compound passing outwardlyffrom the Vgroove willV be; forced through an open joint l4zform`ed between the opposed surfacesof the .cover and rim, which joint is concealed by` al peripheral bead l5 depending from the cover.
' In the 'form shown'in.Fig.'.4,tthe body portion 16. is formed of'sheet metaland re'- inforced by a wood lining 17 A'rim-lS yis secured tothe body and'liningby means ofdepending lugs 19 and'pins or rivets'20 en*- gaging 'the body, lining and lugs. Amold-y ing 2'1 is fastened tothel body and rim yby soldering or any other well knownajand approved means.'t The rim is provided with a continuous groove 22 lhaving its youter walll 23 undercutV and its inner wall 24 extended upwardly above the upper' surfaceuofvthe rim. Flexible strips 25 are locatedadjacent the wall'24 and are adapted tobe engaged by the cover 26 and be curled fovertowa-rd the continuous dependingu flange '27.* The flange 27. is providedA along its flower-edge with arched passages 28 through which the compound 29 flows. `The compound passing j outwardly from the groove to eXude through opposed surfaces of the rim and cover. This joint is concealed by a peripheral bead 81 depending from the cover 26.
It will be understood that the sealing compoundused in the grooves is inserted prior to applying the `cover and substantillly of a semi-plastic state so that it will 22 will be caused fiowreadily and be easily displaced to fill the spaces between the cover and the rim, thereby hermetically sealing the, joint v as soon as the compound sets and hardens.`
`lt is obvious that various changes may be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not intend to be limited to the details herein shown and described except p as they may be specifically included in the upper surface,
