CORPORATION Orl-NEW YORK SHEET-METAL LiniNG FORJBURIAL oAsK'E'rs Application-,filed August l?, 192.Y Serial No. v129,699.l l
This invention relates to burial caskets, commonly known as cofiins, of the Wooden boxand-lid type as distinguished from the all-metal type, but is equally applicable to ized form, size o-r material, v e
Large numbers of these caskets of widely varyingv design and finish are usuallycarried in stock ready to receive the final draping for prompt delivery to the purchaser upon short notice. u
It frequently happens, however, that a purchaserhaving selected a casketjofz particular design and. finishl willv requirevthe d installation ofva sheet metal lining within the box section thereby necessitating the re-v moval of the previously installedupholstering to permit the proper application .of the lining tothe inner surfaces yofthe bottom, sides and end of the boxQafter/Whch ythe upholstering must. bey replaced within the lining before the casket canbe finished ready for use, all Of which consumes considerable timeand adds materially .to the expense of ,the vcasket other than the extra cost ofthe sheet ,metal lining.' ,l
The main object of the present inventionis to provide separately portable sheet metal" lining of standard forms and vsizes according tof the interior dimensionsand form ofv the box section of the casket and to equip said lining with the suitable interior Jup'- holstering or padding so that ifk the sheet inetal'lining is required, it, together with the padding thereon','may be'easily andl quickly installed lwithin 'the casket and locked therein against displacement by mov? able fastening-devices.
.l Anotherr Object is to provide thelining vwithi internal lcleats ofwood` to' which they i upholstering may be tacked without perfol Figure an enlarged transverse t'ferticalV sectional view taken on line 3 3, Figure 1.
The box sectionof the casket may be of any suitable form or size but, as illustrated, comprises a fbottom 1-opposite sides are made ofA suitable wood, the'bottom section being substantially fiat while the side and end portions -2- and '3 preferablyv flare upwardly andv outwardly from l n Vthe niarginal edges. of the bottom-f1.l v
The sheet metal lining is made tofconform to the y,interiorcontour *and *dimensionsr of the youter box section and constitutes what may be termed 'asupplemental box section having abottom portion 4L-, Opposite'sidel portions '-5-f-`` and opposite fend portions -6-41, all ofvwhichare permanently secured together at theirjunctions one with the othery to form a unitary structure which may be inserted vinto and removedfron'lv the outer box andy heldjin operative position within thev Outerbox section by its own weightjaided by its yfrictional engagement therewith. e
section' mayy be additionallyj held 'in operative position within the outer box section by movable fastening means such-as angular' pins 4-7- 4 which are removably insertedin apertures L8-4 in"z the Outer section" across locking pins 47'-, the liningybeingmade. ofy
less' verticaldepth thanlth'eV interior'of the casket for this purpose fas shown in Figures Qand 32' The upper marginal edges of the side andA end wallsl ofthefsupplemental box section or lining Vare returned inwardly and downy wardly to form any; inner marginal flan e #9; which lisrelatively narrow vertical y and "affords aconvenient handle lor handles by which the'supplem'ental box section may be manipulated into and vout of the top of the outer section. N y v if desired, however, thissupplemental box This flange -9- also forms withthe adjacent portions of the sides and ends of the lining a marginal roove i9-- for receiving the upper edge or an upholstering or padding -10- which is applied to the interior of the supplemental box section or lining as shown in Figure 3.
After the upper edge of the upholstering hasV been inserted in the groove -95- the flange-9- may be pressed outwardly toward adjacentouter walls of the lining to firmly hold this portion of the upholstering or padding in place.
A plurality of angular brackets -.-ll-, preferably of bendable sheet metal are secured at one end by brazing, soldering or equivalent fastening means to the. inner surfaces of the. side and end portions of the supplemental box or lining relatively short distances from the bottom thereof and have their opposite ends offset inwardly and downwardly to form recesses. or grooves for receiving the upper ends of ltacklng strips 12V-4 of wood or equivalent material to which the lower edges of the upholstering -10- may Vbe tacked without puncturing the sheet metal lining. l
These tacking strips extend a-lon'g the inner faces of the sides and ends ofthe box lining and preferably rest at their lower edges upon the adjacent portions of the lining bottom -4- while their upper edges extend into the grooves in the brackets. -11- Vand are secured thereto by tacks 413-.
Vhen the brackets'f-U- arejsecured to the inner face of the sheet metal lining their lower offsetends are allowed. to project inwardly in a moreor lesshorizontal plane toA facilitate the insertion offthe tacking strips -12- thereunder afterwhich said offset ends are bent downwardly against the inner faces of .the upper portions ofthe wooden strips and tacked. thereto to hold said strips in place without puncturing the lining, leaving the lower portions o f the strips exposed at the insideyof the supplemental' box topermit the securement ofthe lower edges of the uphol- Ste'rng *lo* thereto by tacks -1-3-, Fis(- ure 3";
The lower edges ofthe lengthwise strips -12- are additionally held in place byV cross bars 14- of wood or equivalent material resting. upon the bottom of the lining with their opposite ends engaged with the inner faces of the lower portions of the side strips.
These crossV bars lllare arrangedfin longitudinally spaced relation preferably near the ends ofthe lining and preferably.
rest by their own weight upon said bottom wit-hout other attaching means so-that they may be easily removed or replaced when desired. or, if necessary, portions of the upholstering or draping may be tacked thereto without perforating said lining.
This supplemental box lining may be made of zinc, copper or other suitable sheet metal to conform to the interior contour and dimensions of standard forms and sizes of caskets ready for immediate installation in any wooden casket of selected design or finish `or finish it is simply necessary to select a lining of corresponding contour and dimensions with the upholstering, tackingbars and brace bars therein and to place it in the casket box and fasten it in place by the fastening members #T-i. if required, thus completing the casket ready toV receive the selected drapery which may be applied on short notice and secured along its upper edge to the inner faces of thev sides and ends of the casket over the upper edge. of the lining Without perforating said lining.
What I claim is 1. A lining for burialV caskets comprising an imperforate sheet metal box havingits upper marginal edge returned inwardly and downwardly to form a groove open at the bottom to receive the kupper edge of uphol-V stering.
2. In. a burial casket having'an outer boxsection, a separately portable sheet metal box-lining conformingto the interior contoury and dimensions of the outer casket-box, and wooden vtacking-pieces applied to portions of the inner surface of said lining.
3. In a burial casket having an outer box.- section, a separately portable sheet metal boxlining conforming to the interior contour and` dimensions of the outer casket-box, wooden tacking pieces applied to the inner surfaces of.' opposite sides of the lining, and braces between said tasking pieces for holding them in place.
4. ln a burial caskethaving an outerV boxsection, a separately portable sheet'metalboxlining, yielding clips secured to the inner surfaces of said lining, and wooden tacking strips held in place by said clips.
5'. The combinationwith awooden burial casket, of an inner sheetmetal box lining seated within said casket,.said lininghaving its groove open at the bottom for receiving parts of the upholstering.
7. The combination With a burial casket, of a sheet-metal box-lining fitted Within the casket and having itsv upper marginal edge provided with anV inwardly and downwardly projecting flange, and inner upholstering members having portions thereof inserted from the underside upwardlybetween the fiange and adjacent body portion of the lining, said flange being pressed outwardly toward the adjacent portion of the main body of the lining to firmly hold the intervening portion of the upholstering in operative potsition. y y
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of August, 1926.
