Be it known that I, JAMES BROPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Plumbing Connections, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved means whereby short lengths of iron pipe may be utilized by joining-them to lead soil pipe ordinarily used with sinks, bath tubs and water-closet connections.

The particular object of the invention is to provide a means whereby the same may be inserted within the end of an iron pipe and effective joint formed therewith by call ing, the connection being so designed that the same is prevented from entering the pipe farther than is necessary for the process of calking.

Further objects of the invention are in the provision of a connection of a type described which may be simple, cheap of manufacture, durable and eflicient in use and in the employment and combination with iron or lead pipe whereby a tight joint may be formed, all substantially in the manner hereinafter more fully explained, illus trated and particularly pointed out in the accompanying claims.

Reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a section through the device showing the manner in which a joint is formed between a lead and iron soil pipe; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the connection; Fig. 3 is a sectional detail taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a sectional detail showing a modified form of connection.

In the drawings, wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts through-' out the various views, the invention as shown consists of a tubular member 1 which is provided at its lower end with an annular flange 2. About its midddle portion the tube flares outwardly as shown at 3 and at the large end is provided with a beveled edge 4. About its middle the tube is provided with a pair of diametrically opposed lugs 5, and said lugs are triangular in cross section, having their narrower or pointed edge 6 directed toward the annular flange 2.

In use the end of the tube provided with the flange 2 is inserted within the end of the iron soil pipe 7 until the lugs 5 engage the end of the pipe. This necessarily limits the movement of the tube and is important in that they prevent the further movement of the tube within the pipe 7 during the calking operation, which consists of the placing of the customary calking cotton 8 about the tube and within the soil pipe, which, it is readily understood, is tamped in with the proper calking tool, the flange 2 holding the calking in place. On top of this is placed lead or a similar material 9 which is also calked into place. The lugs 5 are tapered in the manner shown to allow the calking tool access therebeneath. This is a decided advantage and will be appreciated by those acquainted with the art. The end of the lead drain pipe 10 is then inserted within the flared upper end of the tube and a joint formed between said tube and the pipe by means of wiping, as indicated at 11, and the beveled edge 4 of said tube provides a means whereby a tight joint may be had.

In Fig. 4: I have'shown a modified type of connection which is similar in construction to the afore-described connection and consequently bears similar letters of reference, the only difference being that the flared upper end thereof is provided with an internally threaded portion 15 whereby connection may be had with the drain pipe.

It is evident that various modified constructions may be employed to accomplish a like result, all coming within the spirit of my invention and I do not wish to limit myself in the construction of the same further than is required by the state of the art or that which comes within the scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A pipe connection comprising a tube having an outwardly projecting flange fitting within one of the pipe sections, and calking resting against said flange, between said pipe section and tube, said tube having outwardly projecting. lugs abutting against the end of the pipe section, said lugs being spaced apart to permit access of a calking tool between the pipe and tube.
