This invention relates to a clean-out closure for toilet bowls, the general object of the invention being to provide simple means whereby the Vent or discharge portion of the bowl can be easily and quickly cleaned if the same should become clogged, without removing the bowl from the plumbing. 1
Another object of the invention is to provide a specific form of closure plug for clos- '10 ing the opening in the bowl or any other opena bowl, showlng the lnvention 1n use. 7
Figure 2 is a section on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure '3 is a section on line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4:. is a section on line 44 of Figure 5.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 2 In these drawings, the letter A indicates the bowl, and in carrying out my invention, I form an opening 1 at the junction of the two curved parts of the vent or discharge passage 2 ofthe bowl. This opening is formed with an enlarged outer'part which tapers outwardly and a groove 3 is formed in the shoulder formed by the two parts of the opening. v A. seat 4 of any suitable material is placed in the groove. A boss 5 surrounds the outer part of the opening and the outer wall of said boss forms a seat for the flange 6 of a plug 7 of rubberor the like which engages the tapered walls of the outer part of the opening. A metal plate 8 contacts the inner face of the plug and has its edges resting upon the seat 4 and the shank of a handle 9 is threaded to the central part of the plate and passes through the plug and through an outer plate 10 which contacts the outer face of the plug and is of the same diameter as the flanged part thereof. Bolts 11 are used to hold theclosure in place, these bolts being of substantially T shape, with their heads pressed into the boss, While the material forming the bowl is still soft and after the head has penetrated the bowl to a sufficient depth, the bolt is turned a quarter turn so as to form the arc-shaped slots 12 in the material. Thus after the material has hardened, the openings and the slots remain therein so that the bolts can be passed through the openings and then given a quarter turn so that their heads will T engage the slots and thus the bolts will be held in position, though they can be removed whenever desired by giving them another quarter turn in an opposite direction to place the heads in alignment with the openings. The bolts pass through slots 13 in the edges of the plate 10 and through the flange 6 and then the nuts 14 are tightened to firmly clamp the closure in the opening so that a water and gas-tight joint is formed.
If the vent or discharge should become clogged, it is simply necessary to remove the nuts and then pull the closure from the outer part of the opening by means of the handle 9 so that access can be had to the vent.
An arc-shaped lip 15 is formed on thebowl under the lower part of the outer end of the opening to direct any liquid passing from the opening into a receptacle placed under the lip.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is 2- In combination with a toilet bowl having an opening in one side thereof which is in communication with the vent or discharge passage of the bowl, the outer end of the opening being enlarged and formed with beveled side walls, a shoulder formed at the junction I small part thereof, said shoulder having a I groove therein, a gasket in said roove, a
' flanged plug of resilient material lling the r the plate and nuts on the outeriends of the y beveled part of theop'ening, .a plate on the inner face of the plug contacting the gasket, a handle having a shank connected with the plate andpassing through'th l en plate on the plug through which the handle passes, said outer plate being of the samediameter as the flanged'pa'rt of-the p1u ',=said flange resting upon a part of the bowlwhich I p surrounds the opening, cremovable bolts in said part of thebowl which surrounds: the
opening and passing through the flange and bolts for clamping the parts'in closing po; sition.
' In testimony whereofI afiiamy signature 1 JOSEPH MASTRILLD Q i
