CLEAN-OUT FITTING FOR PLUMBING vApplication filed November 26, 1926. Serial No. 150,756.
This invention relates to a cleanout fit ting for waste systems in plumbing installations and is of the nature of a ferrule adapted at its lower end for attachment in such systems and the upper end of which is substantially flush with the fioor line and formed with a removable cap permitting access to the interior thereof.
An object of the invent-ion is to provide a' fitting of the type stated normally of a length greater than is necessary for the position'it' i the fitting. The fitting may also be'provided with an inlet for the direct connection of a conduit thereto or such inlet may be dispensed with depending upon the requirements of the installation.
These and other objects and these-veral novel features of the invention are herein-.
after more fully described and claimed, and the preferred form of construction of a device embodying my invention is shown in'the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a vertical section of my improved cleanout fitting applied to a drainage fitting.

The fitting is in the form of a cylindrical member 1 or 2 indicated in Fig. 2 and has a closed upper end 3 provided with a wrenchhold 4 and its lower end'is threaded, as will be understood from Figs. land 2, for threaded relation with a portion of the plumbing system as indicated at 5 and 6 for the members 1 and 2 respectively.
The plumbing system here shown forms no part of the present invention and is shown merely as illustrative of theuse to which the invention may be put. s
In the construction of finished and this cleanout fitting is applied at the time the plumbing is installed and is of a length to extend above the possible'fin-- a' building the plumbing is installed before the building is exterior and interior wall surface of the fit-. ting are circ-umferentially grooved as indicated at 8 and -9 in Fig.1, These grooves weaken the wall of the fitting,it beingformed preferably'of cast iron and may be cut by means of a hammer and chisel so that thefl upper end of the fitting lies very close to the floor surface 7. The fitting is provided with the closed end 3 so that waste material, such as shavings, plaster and the usual waste material that arises in the construction of a] building, is prevented from passing into the fitting and therefore into the plumbing y tem and the wrenchhold' 4- is provided on this closed end to enable thelfitting to be screwed into the plumbing fixture with which it is associated. Subsequent to the finishing of the building andof the floor surface the proJecting closedend of the fitting is severed from the body by means of a hammer and chisel to a point approximately on a plane with the fioor surface and a cylindrical mem ber 10 of less diameter than the fitting is inserted in the top. The member 10 is provided with a lateral flange 11 atits. loweu end of a diameter closely approximating'the internal diameter of the fitting 1 or- 2 and the space between the outer Wall of the member 10 and the'lnner wall of the fitting is filled with the packing'12 of any desired type.
v The member 10 internally threaded at its upper end for thereceptionof a cap 18 which isflanged as indicated at 14 to extend over the upper end of the fitting'and providinga neat looking finished end therefor and covers the severed end of the fitting which is more or less unsightly due to its having beencut with a chisel. This cap 13 is preferably formed with an external recess 15 by means of which it may be screwed in place with a wrench or the periphery thereof may be formed in the shape of a nut. The internal grooves it will be noted become filled with the lead or other packing that is utilized in supporting the member 10 and a tight jointis provided between the-member 10 and the fitting which prevents an escape of gas- The threaded cap Inn is preferably providedwith a shoulder 16 cugaging the upper end of the ring 10 to form a tight seal.
In Fig. supplied with a threaded inlet 17 and in Fig. 2 the fittingatQ is shown without such inlet. Preferably the walls of the fitting, whether it is in the form shown at 1 or at 2 in Fig.2,

From the foregoing description it ise'vident that the device is of simple form; is
readily assembled in its original form in a plumbing system, and the invention comprises the fitting with'the closed end and its construction andarrangement permitting cutting to length and association of the member 10 and cap subsequent to assembly of the fitting in a plumbing installation.
Having thus briefly described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is r 1.
