Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that we, WILLIAM T. HUR- LEY and ELMER L. ENGLE, both citizens of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
.This invention relates to heat generating means and particularly relates to an oil burner.
It is the principal object of the present invention to provide simple means whereby a hydro-carbon fuel may be delivered to a burner in a liquid condition and there vaporize for the purposes of combustion, at the same time insuring that the combustion of the fuel will act upon the liquid fuel to sustain the vapor-ization continuously.
The present' invention contemplates the use lof a burner adapted to be regulated by any suitable valve means and which is in communication with a raporizing dome disposed thereover, said dome being supplied with liquid fuel from any source of supply and said fuel being converted within said dome to a gas which thereafter passes through the burner as regulated by a Valve.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, showing the complete burner.
Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section through the burner, more clearly illustrating the details of its construction.
In the drawings, 10 indicates a supply pipe through which liquid hydro-carbon fuel is delivered. This pipe is fitted with a regulating valve 11 for controlling the flow of the fuel to a vaporizing dome 12. The dome is here shown as hemispherical and with its equatorial portion in a horizontal position. This dome may be supported in any desired manner but is shown in the present instance as fitted with a plurality of bosses 13, to which legs 14 are;vv
fastened. Extending upwardly from the hemispherical shell 15 of the dome 1s a tubular projection 16. This portion is substantially cylindrical and its interioris in communication with the interior of the dome. Extending through the interior of the dome and projecting a considerable distance upwardly within the extension 16 is a vertically disposed gas pipe 17 This pipe ,tubular extension 16 of the dome.
is threaded through a boss 18 formed in the base portion 19 of the dome structure. The boss 18 is in communication with a valve casing 20, beneath the dome, and within which a suitable valve mechanism may be housed such as the needle valve 21, which may be regulated by hand wheel 22. The needle valve will control the flow of gaseous fuel from the pipe 17 to a burner nozzle 23. This nozzle is here shown as formed with an elbow which permits its opened end 24: to be beneath the base portionl19 of the dome and substantially in vertical alinement with the central axis thereof. In this manner the base portion 19 of the dome will act as a damper plate and will receive the heat fromthe fuel which is burning and the flames which are impigning against the underface of the dome.
Suspended beneath the vertically extending portion of the fuel nozzle 23 is a drip pan 25 within which an accumulation of liquid fuel may take place and by which ignition of the fuel passing from the nozzle 24 may be initially'made. y
In the `operation of the present invention it will be understood that a desired quantity of liquid fuel may be placed in the pan 25 and that this may be ignited; at the same time allowing the needle valve 21 to be opened. When the fuel in thedrip pan is ignited, it will cause a flame to flare up and surround the nozzle` 23 and possibly strike against the underface of the basek wall 19 of the dome. As fuel is delivered through the nozzle, this will also be ignited andthe performance of the burner started. The heat of the flame passing upwardly from the nozzle 23 will be imparted to the dome 12 as this flame impinges against the underface of the dome and will act to heat the accumulated quantity of liquid fuel within the dome. This will cause volatilization of the liquid fuel which will again pass upwardly in the form of gas and find its way into the As it is -forced`upwardly it will be forced downwardly through the pipe 17 and through the burner. It will therefore be seen that the fuel which has originally been delivered to It will be evident thatlby use of the disclosed structure a very simple and inexpensive burner is provided, which burner is ef iicient 1n its operation and insures that a maximum heat may be produced by a minimum amount of liquid fuel and that the` fiame resulting therefrom will be clean and odorless.
While we have shown the preferred form of our invention, as now known to us, it will be understood that various changes may be made in the construction, combination and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed. v
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. An oil burner including in combination a hollow dome and supports therefor, a tubular extension extending upwardly therefrom, a fuel supply pipe communicating with the interior of said dome, a gaseous fuel pipe within the tubular extension and extending downwardly belowthe dome, said .pipe carrying on its lower end a T-connection, one end 0f which is provided with a valve to regulate the flow of. gaseous fuel therefrom, and the other end with a burner adapted to direct Athis flame against vthe lower portion of the dome.

An oil burner including in combination a hollow dome and supports therefor, a tubular extension extending upwardly therefrom, a fuel supply pipe communicating with the interior of said dome, a gaseous fuel pipe Within the tubular extension and extending downwardly below the dome, said pipe carrying on its lower end a -T-connection, one end of which is provided with a valve to regulate the flow of gaseous fuel therefrom, and the other end having an upwardly turned portion, the free end of which is provided with a burner adapted to direct its ames against the lower portion of the dome. An oil burner including in combination a hollow dome and supports therefor, a tubular extension extending upwardly therefrom,'a fuel supply pipe communicating with the interior of said dome, a gaseous fuel pipe within the tubular extension and extending downwardly below the dome, said pipe carrying on its lower end a T-connection, one end of which is provided with a valve vto regulate the flow of gaseous fuel therefrom and the other end having an upwardly turned portion, the free end of which is provided with a burner adapted t0 direct its fiames against the lower portion of the dome, and a drip pan secured beneath the burner.
