HYDROCARBON-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.v Patnted lua'. 14, 1916;
Application filed November 15, 1915. Sera1No..61,667.,
To all whom/15 may concern.'
Be it known that I, CYRIL C. SLPNICKA,
a citizen of the United States, residing at v Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon-Burners, of which the following is a specification. Y
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hydrocarbon burners. v y
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a burner especially adapted for employing for fuel such well-known hydrocarbons commonly termed kerosene and coal-oihthe 4burner being arranged for \v'aporizing the hydrocarbon prior to the ignitionthereof.
A further object of the device is the provision of a kerosene burner adapted to vaporize the oil and to spread the combustible vapor over a large area for providing an extensive burning surface, the same `being arranged with air mixing means.
A. still further Objectis to providean alcohol heater for a hydrocarbon burner for supplying the initial vaporization of the fuel, the burning vapor effecting a continuance of vaporizing of the fuel during the operation of the device.
lVith these general objects in view` and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the sameconsists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of `parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompany drawings, and then claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views :,-Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the device partly in elevation, and, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device.
It being understood that anyvof the {iuid hydrocarbons may be employed as fuel in the present burner, an inlet or service pipe 10 for the fuel is illustrated as tapped into an upright supporting tube 117of a generator or retort 12, the said tube 11 being mounted upon a stationary supporting base 13.
The burner 14 comprises a cup-shaped casing 15 positioned directly beneath the generator 12 upon oppositely-positioned supporting posts 16 and 17 while a cover plate 18 is mounted upon thecasi-ng 15 and pro? vided with jet perforations or outlets 19` for Y the vaporized fuel. Y
, The generator 12 is inthe form of a spider' having radially-extending arms 20 provided with terminal closure plugsv 21 and is inv axial alinement with the cover'plate 18y as well as a depending neck 22 carried by and opening into the casing 15 at a point be-` tween the posts 16 and 17.
An L-shaped burner pipe or Vtube 23 comi municates with an extended arm 24: of the generator12 and has an upturned outlet endprojecting 'axially within the open lower end of the burner casing neck 22 and having a perforated jet cap 26 mounted upon the top thereof.
A' baffle or distributing member 2,7 is removably positioned within the casing 15 resting upon the bottom 28 of the said casing i.
by means of a plurality of feet 29 and spaced from the sides of the casing a uniform distance bymeans of laterally projecting lugs 30, it being understood that the distributer willthus be arranged axially of the neck 22 for receiving upon its bottom the impact of the combustion mixture rising through the neck 22. The vdistributor 27 vis here illustrated hollow in form for lightness although the same may be constructed ofsolid metalV if desired, it being only essentialthat the distributor 27 be spaced substantially equal distances from the sides, top and bottom of the casing 15.
An alcohol burner in the form of a pan 31 is arranged for initially starting the vai porization of the hydrocarbon fluid and has a radially-disposed arm 32 by means of is conducted by the pipe 23 andextension 25- through the jet cap 26 where the same is,
mixed with airentering through the open end 35 of the neck 22 and upon contacting with the baie 27 spreads out around the same and escapes through the outlet perforations 19 of the burner plate 18 where the,
same is ignited and furnishes an expanse of liame substantially co-extensive with the cover plate 18. The continued burning ofV vice pipe 10 so that the vapor continues to be fed through the jet cap 26 as long as the service pipe valve remains open and during the operation of the burner. The position of the baffle 27 allows an equal distribution of the combustible mixture to the cover plate 18 so that a. uniform heating blaze is pro vided thereabove, thus assisting the combustion of the mixture. By reason of the pivotal mounting of the alcohol burner 31, the same may be readily swung out of operativeV position and again :re-positioned whenever desired.
lllhile the form'of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it-is nevertheless to Vbe understood that various forms, modifications and arrangements of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. n
That I claim as new is 1. A burner comprising a cup-shaped casing having` a depending entrance neck, a perforated cover plate for the said casing, a bathe positioned within the said casing in substantially equal spaced relations with the bottom and sides thereof and the said cover plate, and a hydrocarbon conduit traversing said plate and extending inwardly of the said neck.
2, A burner comprising a casing, a perforated gas outlet cover plate for the said casing, a baffle of smaller dimensions than said casing positioned therein with the top and bottom walls thereof being spaced from the casing and parallel therewith, a vapor generator positioned above the said plate, an entrance feed pipe projecting Yfrom the said generator and communicating with the said casing, and an initial heatingmeans for the said generator.
3. A burner comprising a cup-shaped casing have a downwardlv-extending air mixing neck, a perforated vapor outlet cover plate for the said casing, a hydrocarbon conduit traversing the said plate in spaced relations thereto and centrally projecting within the said neck, an initial vaporizing means lswingingly supported between the said generator and plate, a baffle within the casing positioned. between the cover plate and said neck, and'means for holding the bathe in spaced relation to said casing.
Ll. A burner comprising a cup-shaped casing having a downwardlyextending air mixing neck, a perforated vapor outlet cover plate for` the said casinga hydrocarbon Conduit traversing the said plate in spaced relations thereto and centrally'projecting wit-hin the said neck; radial arms carried by said conduit centrally of said'casing, a Ybaille member positioned. within thev said casing and equally spaced from the walls thereof, a supporting arm, a pan` pivotally carried by the said arm andihaving a path of movement between the said plate and conduit, and a wick member within the said pan.
A device of the Class described, com-v prising al burner casing, a vapor Vgenerator including radial arms Yin axial alinement with the said casing and positioned thereabove, a fuel supply pipe for thev said casing extending from thesaid generator. and a hollow baffle member within the said casing equally spaced from the sides thereof.
6. A device of the class described, `com-z` prising d burner casing, a vapor generator in axial alinement with the said casing andpositioned thereabove, a fuel supply pipe for the said casing extending from the said genV erator, a hollow bafiie member within the said casing equally spaced from the sides thereof,'supporting posts for the said icas-1 ing, an air intake member for the said cas.
ing, and a pivotally mounted initial heating means adapted to be positioned between the said casing and generator.
7. A device of the class described, comprising a burner casing, a vapor vgenerator in axial alinement with the said casingr 4and positioned thereabove,A a fuel supply pipe` for the said casing extending from the said generator, a hollow bafilemember within the said casingequally spaced from the sidesthereof, supporting posts for the said casing',v an air intake member for the said casing, an upright arm carried by one of the said posts. a pan-shaped burner pivoted upon the said arm and having a path of movement'be tween the said generator and casing, and a` wick within the pan-shaped burner.
