J. L. BURNS.
TOILET TANK AND VALVE.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 12, 1919.

JAMES LAVIRENGE BURNS, OF ANAMOSA, IOWA.
TOILET TANK AND VALVE.
Application filed July 12,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES L. BURNS, a citizen of the United States, residing at iinamosa, in the county of J ones and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Toilet Tanks and Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toilet fixtures and more particularly to an improved flushing tank and valve for lavatory.
T e primary object of the invention is to improve the general structure employed in devices of this character so that a more efficient flushing of the bowl and waste pipe will be accomplished.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved valve which will be connected between the flush tank and the bowl and which will be arranged for manual operation so that it may be opened to permit the flushing or the bowl to be readily controlled.
Another object of the invention is to so improve the valve as to cause it to be held in open position after being manually raised so that the water will be rapidly passed from the tank to the bowl and which will automatically close when the pressure of water through the valve decreases.
A further object or" the invention is to provide a device of this character which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
F or a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which zigure 1 is a side elevation of the device constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a cross section through the tank and valve, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section taken approximately on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which like numerals of reference in dicate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, the bowl 1 is of the usual construction and is provided with the waste pipe 2. The flush tank 3 is supported in any preferred manner at the rear of the flush bowl, and is supplied with water Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented M21128, 1921. 1919. Serial No. 310,290.
through a water supply pipe 4 which connects with a suitable source of water supply in the usual manner. interposed between the bowl 1 and the tank 3 isthe control valve 5 which includes an extension pipe 6 connected with the tank 3 and a forwardly projecting extension 7 connected to. the bowl 1. The body of the valve is relatively large and has mounted therein a swinging disk valve 8 which is of hollow construction so that it will be buoyant. This disk is connected to a rod 9, one end of which is provided with an eye 10 connected to a cross rod 11 extending laterally through the valve body near the upper end thereof. The ends of this rod are journaled in suitable bearings 12, one of which is open so that die end of the rod may project outwardly as indicated at 13. A stuffing box 14 is provided to prevent leakage at this point. The extended end 13 of the rod 11 is provided with a handle 15 which may be grasped by the operator to cause operation of. the valve as will presently appear.
The rod 9 is firmly fixed to the movable rod 11 so that when the handle 15 is manipulated the disk valve 8 will'be opened or closed as desired. The top of the valve body is normally closed by a movable cap 16.
The operation of the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of Fig. 2 in which it will be noted the valve is shown in full lines in closed position and dotted lines in open position. WVhen it is desired to operate the valve, the operator grasps the handle 15 and turns the rod 11 which causes the disk valve 8 to raise to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The water in the flush tank immediately rushes through the valve body and out through the extension 7 into the flush bowl. Inasmuch as the disk valve 8 is buoyant by virtue of its hollow construction, it will be apparent that the disk valve will be held in the position shown by dotted lines while the water is rushing through the valve body. This position of the valve will be maintained while the water is passing through the valve body with any force, but as soon as the water ceases to rush through the valve body, the float will drop to the position shown by dotted lines and tie valve thereby will be automaticall closed so that the tank will be filled for the next operation.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference to what might be considered to be the approved or preferred form of my invention. I desire it to be understood that I may make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Havingthus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is
A valve comprising a Valve chamber having an inlet and an outlet in opposite side walls near the bottom of the chamber, a buoyant disk adapted to close the outlet, said buoyant disk being convex on the outlet side,
a rod mounted for turning movement in the upper portion of said valve chamber, a bar connecting the said buoyant disk with said turning rod whereby said disk may be elevated to a raised position and the water rushing through said outlet will engage the convex surface of said disk thereby holding the same in an elevated position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. V JAMES LAWRENCE BURNS.
