To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THEoDoRE H. KRU'KE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arvada, in the county of eiferson and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Railroad-Tie, of which the following is a specilication.
lt is the object of vthis invention to provide a railroad tie to which a rail may be connected readily, novel'means being `provided for holding the rail on the tie,l and the tie being so constructed that it will c0- operate with the means whereby the rail is held.
lt is withinthe province of the disclosure to improve generally and toV enhance the utility of devices of that type vto which the invention appertains.
lVith the above and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of partsand in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l shows in side elevation, a tie constructed in accordance with the inven` tlon, one of the concrete end blocks being omitted; Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a cross section onv the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a fragmental longitudinal section taken in a vertical plane on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
The tie includes a pair of end members 1 preferably in the form of metal plates, the end members having depending hookshaped tongues 2 and upstanding hookshaped tongues 8 alternating with the tongues 2. In each member l, adjacent to the outer end thereof, an opening 4 is formed, an opening 5 being fashioned in the member 1 adjacent to the inner end thereof. The constituent material of the member 1, outwardly of the opening 4 and outwardly of the opening 5 is struck ugwardly to form inverted troughs 6 and A reinforcement 8, preferably in the form of a metal strip, extends along the upper Specification of Letters atent.

The parts thus far described may be alluded to broadly as anchors. y The device includes 'a connector 11 inthe form of a tube. The parts 7 and 10 pass into the connector 11 and are secured thereto in any suitable -way,'for instance by cotter pins l2 having their ends clenched as indicated at 14 on the lower surface of the connectorv 11. The anchors above alluded to areembedded in blocks 15 of concrete or the like, the extremities ofthe parts 7 and 10 projecting beyond the inner end of 'the block- 15. The connector 11 abuts at its ends against the inner ends of the blocks 15. On the block 15 is placed a base plate 16 provided in its ends with slots 17.- A rail 19 rests on each base plate 16. with the rail 19, the braces being shaped to overlap the base flange of the rail 19, as shown in Fig. 4; The-braces 2O have recesses at their inner ends, as indicated at 23, so as to receive the base plate 16. The material freed in the formation of the slots 17 in the base plate 16 is fashioned into tongues 18 which extend upwardly through openings 21 in the bottom portions of the braces 20, the-tongues being clenched on those portions of the braces 20 which lie above the base flange of the rail 19. Securing members 22, which may be screws, pass downwardly through the bottom portions of the braces 20, through the base plates 16 and into the reinforcements 8 and the end members 1. Although the screws 22 constitute a partv of the rail fastening means, the said screws exercise a function in the tie construction per se, since they serve to connect the reinforcements 8 and the end members 1, these last specified elements forming a part of the tie. A legitimate combination, thus, is made out between the rail fastening 'means and the railroad tie construction.
The tie hereinbefore described may be adjusted for gage, by substituting the connector 11 of a given length for another connector of a different length.V The rails 19 will be adequately supported on the blocks l5, and the anchors Will remain iirmly engaged in the blocks.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is Y l. In a device of the class described, spaced blocks; anchors embedded in the blocks, the ends of the anchors projecting beyond the inner end of the blocks; a tubular connector abutting against `the inner ends of the blocks to space the blocks, and receiving the ends of the anchor securing elements uniting the ends of the anchors with the ends of the connector; and a rail fastening means including a part extended downwardly into each block into engagement with the corresponding anchor.
2. ln a device of the class described, base blocks; plates embedded in the blocks, the plates being provided along their edges With alternating upstanding and depending tongues, the tongues being hook-shaped to 'extend above the plate and to extend be" neath the plate7 the plates including end portionsproj ecting beyond the inner ends of the blocks; means for connecting the ends of theplates detachably; and a rail fastening means comprising a part extended downwardly through the block into engagement with the plate.
3. In a device of the class described, a
plate having openings; a reinforcement superposed on the plate and having its end portions extended through the openings; a block wherein the plate and the reinforce ment are embedded; a rail brace on the blocks; and a securing member connected with the rail brace and extended downwardly into'the block, into engagement with the reinforcement and the plate.
4. In a device ,of the class described, a plate; a reinforcement superposed on the plate, the plate having openings into Which the ends o't the reinforcements project; a body wherein the plat-e and the reinforce ment are embedded; a base plate on the block; a rail on thebase plate; a'brace cooperating with the rail, the base plate having a tongue extended upwardly through the brace; and a securing member passing through the brace, the base plate and a portion ol thefblock, the securing member engaging the first specified plate and the reinforcement to connect uhe same.
