Description

ATE T 'Frrcn HENRY K. BURNETT, OF POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVMENT EN BALINGPRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,965, dated March 18, 1873.
' To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, HENRY K. BURNETT, of Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presses 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention7 such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing` which forms part of this specication.
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in baling-presses; and consists in the arrangement and combination of levers for operating the follower and compressing the material to be baled, as will be more fully set forth hereafter.
The accompanying drawing represents a side elevation of my press.
a, represents the body of the press, which, so far as the operation of the follower and the doors for putting in and taking out the material to be baled, is constructed in the usual manner. Hinged to the ground-sills b are the levers c, having friction'rollers secured to their ends, and the short levers e hinged to them near their centers. These short levers project upward toward the body ofthe press, and have the ends of the follower, which project through a slot in the side, attached to them, as shown by dotted lines. Hinged to the top of the press are the long curved arms z', having grooves formed in their inner edges, in which the friction-rollers travel, and having their lower ends attached by means of the ropes or chains to the windlass or drum l.
The operation is as follows: The material to be baled having been put in the body or box, and the doors closed, poweris applied to the windlass l, which draws down and inwardV the ends of the curved arms i. As these arms are drawn inward the curved side acts as a lever in forcing the arms or levers c upward, as shown by the arrows, and this upward movement of the levers c, acting on the short levers e, moves them upward, carrying the follower with them until they rest against the side of the body or box a, when the bale will be complete. o
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1 l. The combination of the three levers c e i, the short one e having its end attached to thc side of the frame so as to exert a direct pull upon the follower, substantially as shown and described.
2. A press in which the various parts are arranged and combined substantially as specied.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set March, 1873.
HENRY K. BURNETT.
