EVERETT B; GLENDENNING, on EAST DEDHAM, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOROF 01m- HALF T MILTON A. rnsrnn, or STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
AMUSEMENT ArrAnA'rUs.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVERETT DENNING, a citizen *of the United, States,
and resident of East Dedham, county of Norfolk, and the Commonwealth of MEtSSilr' chusetts, have invented an Improvement in Amusement Apparatus, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
Th s invention relates to amusement ap paratus, and particularly to' dancing figures adapted to be used inconnection with and actuatedby a motor as, for instance, a talk-' ing machine.
' In'the drawings of one embodiment of my invention illustrated and described herein: rigure 1 is a sideel'evationlof the apparatus in position for use on a talking'ma chine, the cabinet. partly broken away;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation from the left, Fig. 1; and
Figs. 3 and 4 are details of modified forms of locking means for supports'of different designs. Y
,My invention is shown as an apparatus that may bejreadily secured to the cabinet of any conventional talking machine cabinet; and referring first to Figs. 1 and 2, is illus trated as comprising first alongitudinal base or support 1, of suitable material as wood, which rests upon the top 'ofthe cabinet near its edge, andhaving a figure carrying upright or post 2, secured thereon. r
' At one endof the base, opposite the post 2, it may be fashioned to provide a platform 3 of convenient size, or the platform may be constructed separately and secured thereto.
For securingthe base 1 in position on the cabinet, thepost 2 may be provided with a suitable clamp. Herein, Fig. 2, it carries an angular locking member 4% secured to the nut 6 to secure thereto one arm of a U-shaped member 7, the opposite arm being locked.
against the lower face of the overhanging edge 8 of the cabinet' top by a lock screw 9. Suitable 'cu'shion members 10, may be provided, if desired, to prevent marring the cabinet,
For yieldingly'supporting the dancer, the post 2 may be provided with a spring or B GLEN? Specification of Letters Patent. Patented F b 22 1921 Application filed March 28, 19,17. SeriaLNo. 158,139. I 7
other suitable resilient member 11, one end 12 ofwhich may be adjustably secured to the post by a screw l3 while the other end 14 is secured in any convenient manner to the dancer 15, preferably between its extremities,- thereby giving it greater freedom of action. Herein, for convenience, the spring end is extended through the body of the dancer, which may be suitably secured there on. The spring may also be adjusted at the top of the .post by any suitable, means as a screw 16. V
The body of the dancer. may be of any light material as Wood, having its 1e 17, 18, pivotedthereto, I have discover'e that if one leg, 17 is madeslightly longer than the other, a much greater variety of steps and contortions will be produced, as the figure will, by that means, be elfectivel prevented from alighting on bothfeet si- A the wheel 22 with tablets ofvarying thickness, and may be locked in proper position by a thumb nut on'the shaft engaging the block, not shown.
' The wheel 22 carries a wrist pin 26 adjustably positioned in a slot 27 therein by a nut not shown, and to thepin one end of a rod 28 is p'ivotally secured, while its opposite end is slotted at 29 and receives therein a guide pin 30 on the end of a bracket 31 on the post 2. i
Obviously,'as the wheel 22 rotates, the upper end of the rod 28 will hit the spring 11 at each reciprocation thereof and impart a series of upward. thruststo the spring and raise the dancer from the platform. The figure being suspended between its head and feet, it is free to rise and fall with the vibrations of the spring 11 between the successive contacts of the rod 28 therewith, which results in keeping the figure constantly in action. The Wooden feet 32 strike the'platthat are performed by no other similar figure so far as I know. By adjusting the tension of the spring 11 through the screw 16 and by adjusting the position of the pin 26' on the wheel 22, thereby determining the extent of the thrust imparted to the member 11, and thus the distance the figure is raised from the platform, the frequency of the steps of the figure may be caused to coincide with the time of the music.
If desired, an adjusting screw 33 may be provided extending through the base 2 and engaging the surface of the cabinet for raising or lowering the base 2 to corres ond to the thickness of the tablet 24, and t is will avoid the necessity of adjusting the shaft 21.
In Fig. 3 I have illustrated a modified form of locking member for use upon cabinets having a raised edge or flange 34.
In this case an angle member 4 is used having a downwardly extended arm to contact with the flange 34 and an additional spring 36 is secured to the shoulder37 on the post 2, the spring spannin the edge 34 and resting on the arm 35. ushion material 10 may also be used .in thiscase.
In Fig. 4 I illustrate a convenient form oflocking means for use on an ornamented or beveled edge 34. Inthis case the angle member 4 is secured to the post 2 upside down as compared with Fig. 2, but carries the member 7, Fig. 2, at its outer end as before and an additional angle member 38,
slotted for convenient adjustment, is locked to the post 2 by a screw 39 with its arm, not shown, resting against the inner face of the edge v34. In all of these cases the adjustment is such that the wheel 22 contacts with the record tablet or disk near its edge.
It is obvious that the foregoing embodiment of my invention may be modified in many detailed respects, all within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
