COMBINED TABLE AND WRITING-DESK.
application mea May 19, 1919. `serial'lvro. 299,072.
To all whom t may concern Be 1t known that l, FnIDoLIN SCHiMMnL, a
citizen of the United States, residing atl by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved combination table and writing desk; and to such ends, generally stated,
the invention consists of thenovel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined 1n the claim.
This improved combination table comprises Va table proper having a large main drawer provided with supplemental drawers slidable into and out of the ends thereof. The main drawer is provided with a flat top surface that affords a supplemental tableV top or writing desk board. The supplemental drawers are slidable in the main drawer under the supplemental tabletop, and when forced or moved to innermost positions, permit the main drawer to be moved like an ordinary drawer, to and from positions under the top of the main table. They invention also involves minor but important features, as will presently appear.
In thel accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention, like'characters indicate like parts throughout `the several views.
Referring to the drawings`:-
Figure'l is a front elevation of the combination table, some parts being sectioned;
Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the main Vand supplemental drawers drawn out;
F ig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the table showing the main and supplementaldrawers in closed positions; and v Fig. 4 is a section on'the line 4 4 of F ig. 2. l
The main table comprises a top board 5, a rectangular marginal frame 6 supporting the top board 5, and legs 7 supporting the frame 6 in the usual or any suitable way` In the drawings, the legs 7 are shown as very short, but it will, of course, be understood that they may be made of any desired length.
The main drawer is indicated by the nu- Speccaton of Letters Patent. Patngedjgb, 22
'i meral 8, and the supplementalV drawers by the numeral 9. TheV maindrawerjis formed with opening-abut at its ends, is provided with .rabbeted guide barsv 10 that slidejion rail flanges 11 secured to andv projecting inward from the ends of Va table, frame. The'bars 10 project rearward oftheback of the drawer 8 and their ends are tied together by a crossbar 12, the ends of Ywhichnnder-V lap the rail flanges 11 and thus hold the vmain drawer against vertical wabbling movement while free for sliding movement. The? outward movement of the drawer 8 is limitedby'engagemen't off its cross barf12 with another cross bar 13 located immediately belowthe guidebars l10 withits ends secured to ,the rail flanges 11.
On the level withthenppervedge lof its front board, the main Vdrawer 8 is provided with a supplementaltop board or writing Vboard 14 that is located immediately below the plane of the bottomof thetable top '5 so that it is free to slide under the same. Thisboard 14, at its front and rearV edges, respectively, is rigidly secured tot the frontv and back boardsvof the main drawer 8. 'In aV direction transversely of the main drawer` or longitudinally ofthe table, the board 14 terminates considerably short of .thefends of the said top .board 5.. Y i l The supplemental drawers 9 slide directly over the topsgof the guide barsQlO of the main drawer and are further guided" by supporting rails or cleats 15fand 16 secured, respectively to the front and back boards of the main 'drawer 8.4 The supplemental drawers are of such length that both thereof can be slid inward to positions in which Y their eXtreme outer ends will beflush with, or inside of the ends of the main drawer, so.V that when forced to closedv position, they may be freely moved withthe main drawer to-closed position shown in Fig. 3. The eX- f treme inward movements of the two supplemental drawers are preferably limited by a stop strip 17 secured-to the front board of the main drawer. (See Fig. 3.)
It is important to note (see Figsk2'and i 4) that the main drawer can be drawn out to a position in which the supplemental drawers will clear the front corner portions of the table frame 6. VVhenthe supplevthe guide bars 10 when the supplemental drawers are drawn outwardV to positions yshown in Figs. 2 and 4. Attention is here called to the fact that when the drawers 9 are drawn out', as stated, with their stops Y18 engaged with the hars 10, the said drawers may, nevertheless he raised upward at their outer ends so as to carry the stops 18 Y:Wer the bars 10, and thereby to permit the supplemental drawers to` be entirely re-v moved with the least possible effort, for the purpose of cleaning the same, for example.
This removing action is made possible byV the fact that the writing hoard 14 terminates a considerable distance inward of the bars 10 and that there is no other device Jfor holding thefdrawers down at va time when the inner ends' of the supplemental drawers are immediately under the side edges of the said hoard 14.
This improved combined table and writing desk has, in practice, *been found a very convenient article. '.lhe main table top 5 may he used as anordinary table to support variousdifferent articles, such as a lamp, books.
and the like, and these need not be removed `by persons desiring to use the device as a riting desk, for allfone has to do is to draw .out the main drawer and thereby expose the writing board or table for such use, with the drawers containing the various articles desired closely and co'nveniently located. Attention is further called to the fact that providing the main drawer', with the writing board 14, does not reduce the holding capacity thereof, since the two supplemental drawers have a holding capacity equal to that that could he given to the main drawer. if the latter were made in the usual way.
What I claim is:
The combination withl a main table having drawer guiding flanges at its ends, of a main drawer having guide bars slidable on said guide flanges and extended rearward of the inner portionsof said main drawer, said main drawer being open at Vits ends and having a supplemental top board that terminates short of its sides, leaving portions of said supplemental drawers uncovered by said supplemental hoard, supplemental drawers mounted to slide in said main drawer below the supplemental hoard thereof, a cross har connecting the front end portions of the end guide flanges of said Y main table, a cross bar connectingthe inner ends of theguide bars of said main drawer and engageable with the iirst noted cross har to limit the outward movement of said main drawer to positions in which said supplemental drawers may he drawn out, a stop on the main drawer for limiting the inward movement of ,saidv supplemental drawers, and stops on said supplemental drawers engageable with the guide hars of said main drawer to limit the outward movements of said supplemental drawers.
ln testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
