Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH H. BEAN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENTIN'sHANK-LASTERS F/QR sHoEMAKEas.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,896, dated March 18, 1573.
yful Improvement in `Shank-Lasters and Saddle-Pinchers 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
lThis invention consists in construction of a shank-laster with a single handle having a circular end, and pivoting to said handle the lower member of the jaw, the upper member being pivoted to the lower, and being caused to close upon it to gripe `the leather or to move from it to release 'it by the movement of its rear end over the peculiarly-shaped surface of the handle end, which is adapted to produce the desired result.' i
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved shank-laster, Figs. 2 and 3, views of the parts detached from each other, and Fig. 4L, a top view.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to fully describe its construction.
A represents the handle constructed of any suitable material and proper size, and which may be generally ot' any convenient shape. Its front end, however, is provided with the circular conformation a and the dat portion a. B represents the lower member of `the jaws provided in the rear with arms b b pivoted in the recesses of handle A, in front with the griping face b1 and near its center with the ears b2 b2, as shown. C represents the upper member of the jaws, provided in the rear with the arm o, having the inclined face o1 in front with the griping face o2, and pivoted near its center to the ears of the member B, as shown. D represents a set-screw projecting from the arm c, as shown.` If desired, instead of this lthe handle and over the dat portion a', in
which position there is room between it and the handle to permit the jaws to be opened. The leather having been inserted between the jaws, and the handle being brought down, its circular end is brought into contact with the end of the screw, by which means the jaws It will be underare forced tightly together. stood that the circular end of ,the handle corresponds with the line of movement of the arm of the upper member ofthe saw, so that the leather is held in the same relative position to the lower member in every part of its movement over the circular end. When, however, the arm moves out oi' contact with the circular end it may be depressed into the space out from the circle so as to permit the jaws to be opened. By means of the set-screw the jaws may be adjusted .for different thicknesses of leather, and the wear oi' the implement may be compensated for.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The shank-laster described, consisting oi' the handle A, having its bearing-surface arranged as described, the members B C and the adjustingstop D, substantially as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 22d day of January, 1873.
