IMPROVEMENT m C'LOTHES-DRIERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,831, dated March 18,1873.

.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EZRA BREWSTER GIL- DERSLEEVE, of Wading River, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glothes-Driers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing.

Nature and Objects of the Invention.

The invention relates to a device for drying clothes; and consists of a furnace or stove provided with an air-tight pipe, by means of which the products of combustion are drawn from and returned to the furnace, and consinned, thereby. This pipe is provided at a proper point with a collar, to which are pivoted radial arms having supports, the lower extremities of which rest upon a lower collar, provided with indentations to receive the arms and pendants when folded, and also to prevent them coming in contact with the pipe. The object of the invention is to provide a convenient device for drying clothes.

proper distance, is then curved over the furnace A, and, passing downward, is connected therewith by an aperture in its upper surface. The products of the combustion in the furnace A are drawn into the pipe B, where it is attached to the top of the furnace, led through the same, and delivered into the furnace at a point below its top, wherein they are consumed.

It is obvious that this device can be applied to almost any kind of stove having the proper apertures. In the present instance it is supplied with the sleeve z, pipe 3 and aperture n, by means of which the pipe B may be connected with the flue. In case wood or the like material is employed, the connection is advisable, but is not an essential element of the invention.

At a proper distance above the top of the furnace A the pipe B is provided with a collar, G, rigidly attached thereto, and having on its .periphery the recesses r, in which are pivoted one end of the arms D, on the under or inner side of which are provided, at the proper place, the swinging supports E, the lower extremities of which, when the arms are elevated, are placed in the sockets to in the collar F, which is secured rigidly to the pipe B below the collar (3, and at a proper distance above the furnace A, and is provided with the recesses 11 opposite the recesses cc to receive the arms D, and supports E when folded. The device isproperly provided with rollers or casters n, by means of which it can be readily moved.

Operation.

The arms D are elevated to a horizontal position, and the lower ends of the supports E placed in the sockets w, which prevent the supports slipping. The articles to be dried are now hung over the arms D. A fire being made in the furnace A, the pipe B becomes gradually warmed, and the heat therefrom comes in contact with and dries the articles upon the arms D.

When the device is not in use, the arms D and supports E are folded and forced into the recesses a" in the collar F, which retain them and prevent their coming in contact with the pipe B.
