FRED COATS AND JEAN F. HARTWELL, OF SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS.
.DEIPTH -LDJ'USTER FOR \VATCH-ESCAPEMENTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1921.
Application filed March 10, 1920. Serial No. 364,725.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, FRED R. COATS and JEAN F. IIARTWELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, are joint inventors of the Depth-Adjustersfor Watch- Escapements, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to means for adjustment of the depth of engagement between the escape wheel and the cylinder stall or pallet used with lever escapement watches. \Ve have shown and will. describe a preferred embodiment of our invention as applied to a cylinder escapement but ohviously it may be applied, with equal ad vantage, to a lever escapement.
The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawing to which reference is hereby made, and in which Figure 1 is a bottom plan of the pillar plate of a watch and the improved adjusting device in place thereon;
andFig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. The same reference numerals designate the same parts in both the views. 7
To attain accurate adjustment of the cylinder staff relative to the escape wheel with which it cooperates, we provide means now to be described.
Suitably located in the pillar plate 1 are the cylinder stall opening 2 in line with the cylinder stall 3, a trench 4 in which an ad,
the pillar plate to clamp the arm on. the
plate. The slot 13 is of suitable length to permit transverse movement of the arm within the scope of the trench 4. A jewel 15 at the free end of the arm is in line with a jewel 16 near the outer end of the balance cock, and the pivots of the cylinder stafi' bear in the respective jewels. An adjusting screw 17 screws into the pillar plate and its inner end engages on the edge of the arm 5,
and by turning the screw inwardly, or outwardly, as the case may be, very accurate adjustment of the arm may be made. Upon loosening the screw 14 the arm 5 may be turned to the right or to the left to accurately adjust the cylinder staff to the proper depth in the escape wheel 19; and when the stall is properly adjusted, the screw 14 will be tightened to keep the parts in their adjusted position.
By reference to the drawing it will be seen that the balance cock is secured on the upper end of the chariot hub and the chariot and the balance cock move in unison relative to the pillar plate.
We do not restrict our claims to the precise construction herein set forth, inasmuch as it is obvious that other suitable means for uniting the balance cock and the chariot to move in unison, may be used, and still remain within the scope of our invention.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a depth-adjusting device, the combination of a pillar plate having a trench adapted to accommodate a movable arm, also having a cylinder-stafi opening, and a bossopening; in combination with an arm having' a boss extended through and rotative in the boss opening; a balance cock fixed I on the boss of the arm; means for adjusting the arm in the trench of the pillar plate; and means for securing the arm in its adjusted position.
2. In a depth-adjusting device, the combination of an oscillative adjusting arm hav' ing a jewel adjacent to its free end; a balanee cock fixed on the adjusting arm and having a jewel in line with the jewel of the adjusting arm; a cylinder staff having its pivot in the jewels of the adjusting arm and the balance cock; and an adjusting screw adapted to effect slight rotative movementof the adjusting arm on its axis.
3. In a depth-adjusting device, the combination of an oscillative adjusting arm having a jewel; a balance cock fixed on the arm and having a jewel in line with the jewel of the arm; a stafl having its pivot in the jewels of the arm and the balance cock; means for accurate rotative adjustment of the arm; and means for securing the arm in its adjusted position.
