Description
F. WILMOT.
Improvement in Watch-Regulators.
YPaenteciluy16,1872.
Miu-MM5.'
UNITED STATES PATENT .OFFICE FRANQOIS WILMOT, OF NEW YORK, N. X.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATCH-REGULATORS.
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,197, dated July 16, 1872.
To all to whom 'it may cof/acera:
Be it known that I, FRnNors WILMOT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Regulators for Watches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents an outside face view of a watch-regulating movement constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2, an inside face view of the same, and Fig. 3, an edge view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists, rst, in improved means for setting or adjusting the regulatinglever, whereby the most minute and exact adjustments may be made by the application of the watch-key to the arbor of an adjustingcam. It also consistsin a compensating springattachment of one of the curbs of the regulating-lever, whereby the speed of the watch is retarded when placed horizontally, and thus a uniform or nearly uniform velocity insured for it in its change of position from horizontal to vertical.
In the accompany drawing, b represents the jewel of the balance-statt', and C the regulating-lever, which is of the iirst order and is arranged to move about or around the axial line of the balance-staff. The one arm of said lever is bent at d, and is forced or held by a sprin g. c, up against an adjusting-cam, D, that is iitted on an arbor, f, formed with asquare on its outer end to provide for the turning of the cam, and of a graduated disk or wheel, E, connected with it by means of the key of the watch, the barrel of the key itting the square of the arbor. The cam D and the spring e combined serve to eect the adjustment of the regulating-lever in the nicest or most gradual manner, the movement of the cam by the key facilitating the control, and the graduated disk E, in conjunction with a xed index, F,
determining the precise adjustment made or to be made. The arm of the regulating-lever C, which acts upon the balance-spring, has only directly or rigidly connected with it one, g, of the two curbs g he, by which said spring is controlled, the other curb h being carried by a bent or bowed spring, G, which is secured at z' to one side of the lever, and so that, when the watch is in a vertical position, the restricted movements of the balance-spring, incidental to such position, cause the spring Gr of the curb h, in a measure, to be passive; but when the watch is in a horizontal position, then the increased movements of the balancespring give activity to the spring G and the curb or curbs exert a retarding eifect upon the watch. The object of this' is to make the watch keep time in both of the usual positions to which it is commonly exposed. Thus, it is well known by watch-makers and others that, however accurately a watch may be regulated to run in a suspended or vertical position, it is apt to gain slightly when placed horizontally, by reason of the diminished friction of the pivots in the latter position. This tendency to acceleration is prevented by the springheld curb IL, which then acts upon the balancespring with a retarding effect, the spring F yielding slightly to the longer and faster vibrations of the balance-spring, consequent upon the diminished friction of the pivots.
What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the cam D and its adjusting-arborf with the regulating-lever C, the spring e, the graduated disk E, and the index F, substantially as specified.
2. The attachment of one of the curbs h to the regulating-lever C by means of a spring, G, essentially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
' F. WILMOT.
