FRANK .A. HAYES, OF FLINT, MICHIGAN.
COASTER.
Application filed July 19, 1920.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, F RANK A. HAYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Coaster, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a coaster of the sort used by children, and the invention aims to provide novel means whereby, at the will of an operator, the standard which supports the seat may be swung parallel to the line of advance of the coaster, or be held rigid.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
lVith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, with in the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a coaster constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation; Fig. 3 is a top plan; Fig. 4 is a plan of the seat; Fig. 5 is a section taken approximately on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
The coaster comprises a body 1 supplied at its ends with wheels 2. A standard 3 is shown, the same being connected at its lower end, by means of a hinge 4 to the body 1, to swing, at the will of an operator, in a plane parallel to the line of advance of the coaster. The forward swinging movement of the standard 3 is retarded, and the standard is drawn rearwardly into an upright position, through the instrumentality of a retractile spring 5, one end of the spring being attached to the standard, and the other end of the standard being attached to the body, the low r end of the standard onoperating with the body to hold the standard in an upright position, and against rearward swinging movement, as shown in Fig.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1921.
Serial No. 397,189.
1. Means is provided whereby the standard 4. may be held rcleasably against the for ward swinging movement, the aforesaid means consisting, if desired, of a hook 6 pivoted at 7 to the body 1 and adapted to engage with. an eye 8 on the standard 3. The standard 8 is provided with vertically spaced openings 9. The numeral 10 denotes a seat having a notch 11 receiving the standard 3. An angle bracket 12 is connected to the lower surface of the seat 10, the depending arm of the angle bracket bearing against the rear surface of the standard 3. A securing device, such as a bolt 14, may be mounted in any of the openings 9 of the standard, and in the depending arm of the angle bracket 12, the construction being such, obviously, that the seat 10 may be raised and lowered. A wing nut 15 may be threaded on the bolt 14, the wing nut engaging the depending arm of the angle bracket 12.
If desired, the hook 6 may be cast off from the eye 8 in the standard, and then the standard can swing forwardly and backwardly while the operator is occupying the seat 10, the feet of the operator being thrust against the ground. Since the standard 3 and the seat 10 have a swinging movement, the vehicle or coaster may be propelled with great rapidity with comparatively little effort.
Should it be desired to stand on the rear end of the body 1 and propel the vehicle by foot thrust, then the hook 6 may be engaged with the eye 8, the standard 3 being held vertically in a rigid position, the operator grasping the standard to steady himself. The seat 10 may, of course, be adjusted vertically on the standard 3, to accommodate riders of different statures.
Having thus described the inventiomwhat is claimed is 1. A coaster comprising a wheel-mounted body; a standard; a seat on the standard; means for connecting the standard with the body, whereby the standard may swing in a direction substantially parallel to the line of advance of the coaster; and spring means for resisting the forward swinging movement of the standard.
2. A device of the class described, con.
structed as set forth in claim 1, and further swinging movement with respect to the 10 characterized by the fact that the seat is body.
adjustable vertically on the standard, means In testimony that I claim the foregoing being provided'for holding the seat in vertias my own, I have hereto afiixed my signacally adjusted positions on the standard, ture in the presence of two witnesses.
3. A device of the class described, con- 7 V V FRANK A. HAYES. structed as set forth in claim 1, and further lVitnesses v characterized by the provision of releasable I S. S. PEARLsTINE,
7 means for holding the standard against Mrs. MINA F. HAYES.
