Description

T. HARRISON- NUTCRACKER.
APPLICATION men MAR. 27. 1920.

UND STTES PATENT TIIOMAS HARRISON, F TESTON, ONTARIO, CANADA.
,NUTCR.ACKER.
Be it known that I, i11o1ms Hanmson, of VVeston, in the county o York, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Nutcrackers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to honsehold nnt crackers, and my object is to devise an efficient implement which will be simple in construction and yet qnickiy adjustable t0 operate on nuts of any size.
I attain my object by means of the constructions hereinafter described and illus trated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 :is a plan view of a pair of nut crackers constrncted in accordance with my invention Fig. 2 a side elevation of the same, partly in section, showing the parts in position ready to crack a nut; and
Fig. 3 a similar view showing the parts in the position they assume with the nnt cracked.
In the drawings like numera]s of reierenre indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
1 is the handie provided at one end with the post 2 extending np substantialy et right angles thereto, and preferabiy of rectangn1ar cross section, its thickness being preferabiy considerably less than its width. One transverse side of this post has teeth 3 formed thereon, preferably cf ratchet ior1n, the teeth tiacing tovvard the handle. These teeth are preierabiy formed at the inner transversc side of the post.
The handle 4: has a sl0t formed therein through which the post passes, the s1ot being snbstantially the same width as the thickness of the post and somewhatlonger than the breadth oi the post. At one end of the slot (in the construction shown, the inner end) is formeda tooth 5 adapted to interengago with the teeth and the post. By moving the handle 4: longitudinaily the tooth 5 may be disengaged from any given tooth and reengaged with any other tooth, so that the handles may be suitably spaced te suit the size of the nut being cracked.
The handle 4 is provided with a projec tion 6 adapted to engage the side of the post opposite the toothed aide t0 limit the rocking movement of the handles toward one another. Preferably the outer end of the han- .Specification 01" Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1921.
. Application fi1ed March 27, 1920. Serial No. 369,308.
d1e L beyond the slot is upwardly bent and the projection 6 formed on the end thereof.
T0 avoid accidental disengagement of the tooth 5 from that one of theteeth 3 with which it may be engaged, I provide a spring engaging the handle 4 and the post 2 tending to draw the tooth 5 against the post. In the pre ferred arrangement I employ a bent sprmg 7, which is suitably securcd to the outer end of the hande l and is bent up through the siot to engage the back of the post 8. The opposed faces et the handles adjacent the post are preferabiy provided with rngosities 8 as is usual to give them a suitable grip on the nuts being cracked.
To prevcnt the handle et being removed and lest I provide the post 2 with a pin 9, which prevents the handle sliding ofi the post.
From the construction described it W111 be seen that I have devised a nutcracker which Wil1 be very efiicient, simple in construction, and which may be very quickly adapted to the diameter of: the nut to be cracked, which gives it an important advantage over the ordinary vacher and in which tvvo adjnst1nents on]y are provided.
VVhat I daim as my invention is l. A nnt cracker comprising a handle having a post formed at one endoi rectanguiar section and provided with a series of teeth on the inner transverse side; a second handle having a sot frormed therein thrcugh which the post passes, the slot being of substantiaily the same width as the thickness of the post and somewhat longer than the breadth of the post; a tooth formed at the inner end of the sot adapted to interengage with the teeth on the post; :111 npwardly turned projection on the outer end et the slotted hand1e adapted, to engage the side o:E the post opposite the toothed side t0 1i1nit the rocking movement et the handles toward one anbreadth of the post; a tooth i'ormed at the inner end ofthe s1ot adapted to interengage with the teeth on the post; and an upwardly turned projection on the outer end of the slotted handle extendng above the handle adapted to engage the side of the post opposite the toothed side to mit the rocking movement of the handles towurd one another.
3 A nut cracker comprising a handle having post formed at one end of rectangular section and provided with a series of teeth on thenner transverse sde; a second handle having a Slot formed the1en through which the post passes, the s1ot being oE substantially the same width as the thickness of the post and somewhat longer thnn thc breadth of the post; a tooth formed at the inner end of the slot adapted to interenguge with the teeth on the post; un U )W:Ur U turned projection on the outer end 01 the slotted hand1e adapted to engage the side oi the post opposite the toothed sdo to ]in1i the rocking movement of the handles town1d one another; and a bout spring semred to the outer end of the slotted handlc and oxtending up through the end of: the slot in engagement With the adjacent side of the post.
