Description
B. TWETO.
COTTER PIN REMOVER.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 19, 1919.
1,357,012, Patented Oct. 26,1920
WITNESSES! I A INVENTUH Jen/4min 921m Maw/w By A TTORNEYS PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN TWETO, OF MISSOULA, MONTANA.
,, COTTER-PIN REMOVER.
Application filed November 19, 1919.
T 0 all to ham it may concern:
Be it known that I,- BENJAMIN TWETO, a c1t1zen of the United States, and a resident of Missoula, in the county of Missoula and State of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Cotter-Pin Remover, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description This invention relates to improvements in cotter pin removers, an object of the invention being to provide a device of the charac ter stated which can be operated by one hand and which will exert a minimum of leverage to insure an easy withdrawal of the cotter.
A further object is to provide a device of the character stated which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonably low price, which will be neat and attractive inappearance, and strong and durable in use.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a perspective View illustrating my improved tool in operation; and
Fig. 2is a view in side elevation of the tool remover.
My improved device comprises two main parts, namely, a bar 1 and a slide 2, the latter mounted to slide freely on the bar 1 and having a crossbar 3 fixed thereto in any approved manner and extending at both ends beyond the edges of the slide. A transversely projecting handle 4; is fixed to one end of the bar 1 and operates as a grip to receive the palm of the hand indicated by the reference numeral 5 in Fig. 1. The other end of the bar 1 is preferably recessed, as shown at 6, to conform to the shape of a journal and is preferably beveled or sharpened so as to facilitate the entrance of the bar between the members of the cotter pin to spread the same, and also to prevent slipping in'normal use.
An opening 7 is provided in the bar 1 which may be utilized to receive a hook or other device upon which the tool may be hung up out of the way. A spring 8 is secured to one edge of the slide 2 and is adapted to spring into a notch 9 in the Specification of Letters Patent.

edge of bar 1 and prevent accidental move- 65 ment of the slide when the device is not in operation. A hook 10 is provided at one end. with an eye 11 positioned between perforated lugs 12- on the slide 2 and a hinged pin 13 is projected through the lugs 12 and the eye 11 providing a hinged connection for the hook.
In Fig. 1, I illustrate an ordinary cotter pin extending through. a journal 15 and illustrate in this figure the position of the tool for removing the cotter pin. By hinging the hook 10 the latter may be readily manipulated to position the hooked end through the eye 16 of the cotter pin and when the recessed end 6 of the bar is placed against the journal, the device is in position for use.
The handle 4 is located in the palm of the hand 5 and the fingers grasp the crossbar 3 so that when the hand is contracted, the slide 2 is moved longitudinally of bar 1 and the cotter pin is removed. By reasonof the shape of the-hook 10, the cotter pin will be retained thereon and not fall to the groindso that it can be conveniently handle Various slight changes may be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from the invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A cotter pin remover, comprising a bar, a slide mounted on the bar, a hook at one end of the slide, and crossbars at adjacent ends of the bar and the slide. a
2. A cotter pin remover, comprising a bar, a slide mounted on the bar, a hook at one end of the slide, crossbars at adjacent ends of the bar and the slide, and a spring on the slide engaging the edge of the bar.
8. A cotter pin remover, comprising a bar having a recess in one end and a handle at its other end, a slide on the bar, a hook on the slide, and a crossbar on the slide.
4:. A cotter pin remover, comprising a bar, a handle on one end of the bar, a slide on the bar, a hook hingedly connected to the slide, and'a crossbar on the slide.
5. A cotter pin remover, comprising a having a notch in one edge and an opening bar having a notch in its edge, a slide on the adjacent its recessed end, a slide on the bar, bar, a hook on the slide, and a spring on a hook on the slide, a spring on the slide 10 1 the slide adapted to engage in the said notch. adapted to engage in the notch, a handle on 5 6. A cotter pin remover, comprising a the bar, and a crossbar on the slide.
bar having a recess at one end and having a beveled edge at its recessed end, said bar BENJAMIN TWETO"
