on'rnoroon'ric IMPLEMENT! Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1, 1919.
Application filed September 7, 1918. Serial No. 258,002.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. ANGLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Orthodontic Implements, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to that class of implements that are adapted for the adjust ment of orthodontic devices to the teeth, and is especially directed to a novel form of adjusting pliers designed to connect the arch-bar with attaching brackets on the respective tooth engaging devices.
The principal objects of my invention are to provide a pair of adjusting pliers that are adapted to conveniently effect the engagement of an arch-bar with the tooth attaching means on teeth that recede, or that are flanked by teeth that abnormally project.
Other objects of my invention are to provide a pair of adjusting pliers having its beaks so formed as to firmly grasp the opposite edges of a flat or ribbon arch-bar, and to straddle the brackets on the toothbands, with which said arch-bar is to be engaged.
Specifically stated the form of my invention as hereinafter described, comprehends a pair of pliers having its respective beaks bifurcated to provide alined slots or recesses, and having grooves in'the opposed surfaces of the respective beaks, extending along their forward ends.
My invention also includes all of the various novel features of construction and arrangement as hereinafter more definitely specified.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1, is a perspective view of a pair of pliers conveniently embodying my invention; Fig. 2, is an enlarged side elevational view of said pliers, showing the beaks separated and grasping the opposite edges of a ribbon arch-bar, which is shown in section for convenience of illustration; Fig. 3, is an enlarged fragmentary plan view of said pliers, showing a fragment of an arch-bar eing applied to a receding tooth, flanked by pro ecting teeth; and Fig. 4, is an en larged perspective view of fragments of the forward end of the beaks, shown separated for convenience of illustration.
In said figures the pliers comprises the relatively movable members pivoted at 1, and including the handles 2 and 3, and beaks 4: and 5, which are provided with the respective grooves 6 and 7, extending parallel with, and adjacent to their forward end, in their opposed surfaces.
Said beaks are also provided with relatively alined slots 9 and 10, in their forward end, forming the bifurcations 11 and 12, on the beakft, and bifurcations 13 and 14, on the beak 5, which bifurcations conveniently afford a four point contact upon the opposite edges of the arch-bar l5, and not only insure a firm grasp of said arch-bar 15, but provide free space for the bracket 16, which said bifurcations are arranged to straddle when adjusting the arch-bar to the bracket 16, on the toothban-d 17 as shown in Fig. 3.
It will be obvious from an inspection of Fig. 3, that where a malposed tooth is lingually out of alinement, the arch-bar 15, may be grasped by the adjusting pliers and bent thereby into such contour as may be necessary by the disposition of the adjacent teeth of the dental arch, and forced by said pliers, into engagement with the attaching racket 16, of the tooth-band 17, on said malposed tooth.
I do not desire to limit my invention to the precise details of construction and arrangement as herein set forth, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A pair of orthodontic adjusting pliers,
having its beaks grooved transversely ad- In witness whereof, I have hereunto set jacent to their forward ends, and Provided my hand this 19th day of August, A. D., 10 with slots intersecting said grooves. 1918.
2. A pair of orthodontic adjusting pliers, EDWARD H ANGLE having its beaks bifurcated, and having the opposed surfaces of said beaks grooved Witnesses:
across said bifurcations adjacent to their LURA C. KISHBAUGH, forward ends. 7 LB. HIGLEY.
