Be it known that 1, CHARLES J. DIETEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olean, in the county of Catta1*augus,and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to laundry apparatus, particularly to clothes boilers, and has tor its object the provision or": a clothes boiler having disposed therein a foraminous container within which clothes to be boiled are disposed, the invention further including means whereby the ioraminous container may be elevated out of the bolhng water so that the clothes may be drained and so that the clothes may be readily removed, the device having the advantage of eliminating the time consuming and hazardous practice oi fishing out clothes with a stick.
An important object is the provision of a device oi this character which may be con structed as an attachment to an ordinary existing boiler whereby the cost may be reduced.
A further object is the provision of a device of this character so constructed that the toraminous container may be removed when desired, detachable handles being provided for the purpose.
Still another object is the provision of a device of this character in which means is provided for holding the ioraminous cou-' tainer elevated.
An additional object is the provision ot a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly eflicient in use, labor saving and durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and c aimed. and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a boiler equipped with my device,

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a wash boiler which may be of the ordinary size and shape and of any desired material. This boiler is provided with the usual handles 11 by means of which it may be lifted from place to place. i
In carrying out my invention I provide a vertically disposed channel member or bar 12 secured against the inner face of the boiler at any desired point. Slidably mounted within this channel bar is a bar 13 which may be provided with rollers let for reducing friction. Throughout its length the bar 13 has formed thereon rack teeth 15 and at its lower end the bar terminates in laterally extending arcuate arms 16 which are provided upon their undersides with lugs 17 seating upon the bottom of the boiler 10 and the purpose of these lugs is to hold the arms 16 out of contact with the bottom.
Disposed within the boiler 10 is a clothes container 18 formed of perforated metal or of wire screen, as preferred, and this container is of such size as to allow slight clearness between it and the walls of the boi er. The upper portion of the container may have engaged thereon hooks 19 carried by a handle 20. in actual practice two opposite handles being used, so that the container may be lifted out. It should be here stated that the boiler 10 is provided with a suitable cover 21. The container 18 is adapted to rest upon and be supported by the arms 16 and he held thereby out oi contact with the bottom of the boiler so as to prevent burning of clothes within the container.
In order to eiiect elevation of the container when desired, 1 provide a structure detachably engaged upon the boiler and including a frame comprising a pair of arms 22 adapted to straddlingly engage the guide channel 12. This frame is provided with a clamping member 23 adapted to engage against the outside of the boiler and forced into engagement therewith by a screw 2%. Carried by the frame are spaced ears 25 through which is journaled a shaft 26 having one end formed with a crank handle 29.
In the operation of the device, water or soap suds is poured into the boiler, the bar 13 being of course in position within the channel bar 12. The container 18 is placed within the boiler and of course contains the clothes to be boiled. As above stated, the container seats upon the arms 16 carried by the bar 13. The parts being thus arranged, the cover 21 is placed upon the boiler 10, after which the clothes may be boiled in the usual manner.
When it is desired to remove the clothes from the boiler, it is first necessary to remove the cover 21. The clamping member is then placed in position upon the boiler with the arms 22 straddling the channel bar 12 and with the member 23 disposed against the outside of the boiler. The screw 24 is then tightened to hold this structure firmly. \Vhen the parts are thus arranged, it will be seen that the pinion 28 will be in such position that it will mesh with the ra k bar 13. l yrotating the crank handle 27, it will be seen that the bar 13 will be elevated, carrying with it the container 18 and the con tainer is thus moved until it is disposed above the water in the boiler. The pawl 29 prevents retrograde movement of the bar 13 and the container will thus be held at the desired elevation so that the water may drain from off the clothes. The removable handles 20 may then be engaged within the ears.l9 and the container may be elevated bodily from the boiler or,'if desired, the clothes within the container may be readily removed. It will thus be seen that the boiler itself need notbe disturbed, that is there is no necessity for decreasing the heat beneath the boiler at any time and that danger of scalding will be reduced to the minimum, while at the same ftime the work will be expedited.
Asshown in the modified form, the channel bar 12 instead of being rigidly secured within the boiler, may be rigidly secured to the frame of the clamping member, in which event my device may be manufactured simply as an attachment to any ordinary boiler. While the device is shown and described as used for boiling clothes, it will be readily apparent that it is equally well adapted for use in cooking any fruit and vegetables in cans, as is necessary in certain processes 01 preserving. It will also be equally apparent that 1 may make such changes in the form, construction, and arran einent or" the parts of the invention as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In combination with a wash boiler, a vertically disposed channel bar constituting a guide, a vertically movable rack bar slidably engaged within said channel and having its lower end provided with laterally extending arms, a foraminous container disposed within the boiler and seating upon said arms, a frame adapted to be clamped upon the boiler and including arms disposed in straddling engagement with said channel bar, a pinion j ournaled in said frame and engaging said raclr bar, a pawl engaging said pinion and a handle for rotating said pinion, said channel bar being secured to said frame.
2. An attachment to wash boilers comprising a channel bar forming a guide, a frame secured to the channel bar and including a depending arm arranged in spaced relation to the channel bar and further including spaced ears, a screw journaled through said arm and adapted for clamping engagement with the outside of the boiler, a shaft jour naled through said ears and having an op erating handle, a pinion on said shaft. a vertically movable rack bar slidably mounted within said channel bar and meshing with said pinion, lateral extensions at the lower end of said rack bar, a foraminous container disposed within the boiler in seating engagement upon said supporting arms, and a pawl. engaging said pinion.
