ATTORNEY SIMPER'I C. BARrHoLDi,

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO A. KURT, OF LOS ANGELES, vAND SIMPERT C. BARTHOLDI, 0F PORTERVILLE,
- CALIFORNIA.
DISHED-LID CONTAINER.
Be it known that we, :OTTO A.. KURT and citizens of the residing at Los Angeles, in Los Angeles, and Porterville,
of Tulare, respectively, and
United States, the county of useful Improvements in Dished-Lid Containers, of which the following is a specifis cation.
The object of our present invention is the provision of a dished-lid container of the type in which an opening lever is pivotally attached to the dished lid; the improvement consisting .in providing the opening lever with an offset portionadapted when the lever is moved to its working position, to bear solidly on the upper end of the con tainer body, whereby great leverage is afforded and only a slight movement of the lever is necessary to loosen the dished lid and adapt the same to be removed through.
the medium of the lever. The opening lever inasmuch as a portion thereof is adapted to bear against the pe-' riphery .of the dished portion of the removed lid and so that the lever will extend downwardly and outwardly from the lid and render it convenient to handle the said lid through the medium of the lever.
In the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof:
Figure l is a vertical section showing the lid as closed and the opening lever in .its inner, idle position, said view showing in dotted lines the position in which the opening lever is placed precedent to its employment for the displacement of the lid.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is an elevation illustrating the lid and the opening lever, and also illustratin the bearing of the periphery of the lid againsta portion of the openin lever to permit of the lid beingconvenlent y handled throughthe medium of the lever.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The container body 1 is of can form, and is provided with a marginal end flange 2, and an end wall 3 in which is a flanged opening 4:. This is the ordinary well knownconstruction, and the lid 5 is also of the ordinary well known construction, being Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 18, 1921.
Application filed April 10, 1920. Serial No. 372,927.
lever to bear solidly on the end wall 3 of the body. Between the offset portion 10 and the 'IIlflJOl handle portion 11 of the leveris an intermediate portion 12 disposed approximatelyat right angles to the major portion, and. at the free end of the handle portion 11 is an angularly disposed terminal 13 that extends at an obtuse angle to the handle of lever 7 and is adapted when the lever is in idle position, to extend-upwardly from the top of the lid 5, so that the lever may be readily grasped and moved to its working position.
The handle or major portion of the lever 7 bears flat against the lid 5, see full lines in Fig. 1,.and hence the portion 10 is adapted to rest flush with the can edge so as not to interfere with another can being superim posed on the can.
When the lever is in its working position (see dotted lines in Fig. 1), the offset portion 10 bears solidly on the end of the body, and therefore when downward pressure is exerted on the outer end of the handle portion ll, the lid 5 is strongly displaced.
After the displacement of the lid 5 as stated, the operator retains his hold on the lever 7, whereupon the lid 5 will bear against the ofi'set portion 10 of the lever (see Fig. 3), and therefore the lid may be conveniently handled through the medium of the lever, and may .be readily restored to its position in the end wall of the body. Again when the lid is restored to its closed position as stated, the lever 7 may be swung back to its original idle position, shown by full lines in Fig. 1, so as to be out of the way.
Having described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
A dished-lid container of lid-opening lever type, comprising a container body havin an end wall within and spaced fromlts en and in which is an opening spaced from the side wall of the container, a dished connected to the edge of the dished lid andmovable from within the lid to an outwardly and downwardly extending position outside the same and vice versa, and having adjacent to the pivotal connection an offset portion arranged to fulcrum against the end of the body and also having a major handle portion and an approximate right angle portion intermediate of the offset portion and the handle portion; the said handle portion being straight and having at its free end an obtuse-angle terminal adapted when the handle portion is in its inner idle position fiat on the top of the lid to permit the ofi'set portion to rest flush with the can edge, to extend upwardly from the lid, and the offset portion being arranged when the lever is swung outwardly and downwardly to bear against the outer side of the dished portion of the lid and enable the lever to serve as a handle for the lid.
In testimony whereof we affix our Signatures.
