Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 18, 1921.
Application filed August Elli, 1920. Serial No. 406,750.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Hans P. M. Hansen, a citizen oi the United Eltates, residing at .l remont, in the county of Dodge and [State ct Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Protectors tor the Jo ner-loints oi Beveled liap-ldidings; and do hereby declare the following to be tull, clear, and exact description of the iii-- vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains' to make and use the same.
lily invention has for its object to provide a simple and highly el'licient protector tor the corner joints oi? beveled lap sidings; and,
that end, generally stated, it consists of tie novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
its is generally known, it is dillicult to make the corner joints of siblings weather tight, without a metal corner protector oi some kind. 'The water will get in and rot the ends of the sidii s especially the overlapping parts. My invention provides an inclpensive corner protector for that purpose, which completely houses said joints and overlaps the sidings below.
'lrly invention is illustra ted in the accompanying drawings, wherein like notations refer to like parts throughout the several views. 1
lieterring to the drawings Figure l is perspective ot portion of a corner of an outside wall with lap siding showing my corner protector in working position;
2 is a horizontal cross section of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig.1;
3 is a sicleelevation or my protector detached I Fig. l is a vertical section taken on the line eid of 3;
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of my protector detached; and a Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank sheet from which my corner protector is made.
The numeral 7 indicates a portion of an ordinary corner post of a'wall. Inerals 8 represent the corner portions of the ordinary sheathin and 9 the lap siding.
My protector is secured to the corner of a lower pair o'l joined .sidinpgs by means'of two nailing flanges 10, which overlap the lower siding and are secured thereto. A
The nunarrower pair of outer flanges 11 project ti-om said nailing); flanges 10, interned at their bottom, toriningseats and a housing" nor the next upper pair of siding's and the joints thereol. A. double vertical partition 1.3, from which said nailing flanges 10 are section oil said partition, and so hold said partition together and keep the two sets oil: flanges in their proper angular relation. l Vhile my invention may be constructed in any suitable way, it preterably folded out from a single blank sheet or metal of: proper form, as shown in Fig. 6. The dotted lines indicate the lull lines. The letters a, Z), c and d designate different fielded parts in the respective order in which they are folded. The letter 6 designates projecting cm s wl'iich are folded to make the inturned bottom oi": the outer flange and are the clcnchinp; clips already described. To form my corner protector l) is folded flat on a termin the strong double outside flange, and c is folded at an angle of 45 degrees toward 7), making' a section of the double partition 13. Then (Z is folded toward 0 in a position parallel with the fold a b, making the nailing flange 10. Similarly the other symmetrical sections a, '6, c and cl are folded. Then o e is folded toward o l; at 90 degrees to it, and 0 and 0 are clipped together by bending; their flanges f and buckling them against 0. It then remains, to "fold c over (2 to form the inturued bottom oi the flanged housing, as shown in Fig. 5. In applying my corner protector to the siding, it is nailed onto and overlaps the lower pair oi joined siding. Then its pair of upper sidings are put in their seats with in the protector, and said sidinn's are nailed to and slightly overlap the siding below, as shown in 1. The joints are then completely housed and covered by my protector.
What I claim is:- l. A. protector, tor the corner joints of siblings, cornprisinp nailing; flanges securable to a lower pair of sidings, and outer flanges affording seats and a housing for the next upper pair of sidings and thejoints thereof.
2. A protector, for the corner joints of sidings, comprising an angular pair of nailing flanges adapted to be secured to and overlap a lower pair of sidings, and angular outer flanges inturned at the bottom afl'ording seats and a housing for the next upper pair of sidings and completely covering the joints thereof.
3. A metallic protector, for the corner joints of sidings, entirely folded out from a single sheet of metal, comprising an angular pair of nailing flanges adapted to be secured to and overlap a lower pair of sidings, angular outer flanges inturned at the bottom affording seats and a housing for the next upper pair of siding-gs and completely covering the joints thereof, and a double vertical partition connecting the said two sets of flanges and cooperating with the same to make said housing and seats.
2. A protector, for the corner joints of sidings, folded out from a single sheet of metal, comprising an angular pair oi nailing flanges of one thickness of said metal, adapted to be secured to and overlap a lower pair of sidings, angular outer flanges of double thickness of the metal inturned at the bottom aflording seats and a housing for the next upper pair of sidings and the joints thereof, and a double vertical partition connecting the said two sets of flanges and cooperating with the same to make said housing and seats.
5. A protector, for the corner joints; of sidings, folded out from a single sheet of metal, comprising an angular pair of nailingflanges of one thickness oi said metal, adapl- 40 ed to be secured to and overlap a lower pair of sidings, angular outer flanges of double thickness of the metal intuined at the bot tom alfording seats and. a housing for the next upper pair oi? sidings and the joint thereof, a, double vertical partition connectir the said two sets of fian e: and cooperating with the same to make said housing and seats, and a clenching clip on the bottom of both sections of said partition serving to hold the same together and. keep the two said sets of flanges in their proper angular rclations.
In testimony whereof I ailiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HANS P. hi. HAYSEN.
