ANDREW A. KRAMER, OF KANSAS CITY, KANSAS.
EAVES-TROUGH CONSTRUCTION FOR SIIEET-IVIETAL BUILDINGS.
Application filed December 2, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Anornw A. KRAMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Wyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eaves- Trough Constructions for Sheet-Metal Buildings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to sheet metal buildings, and more particularly to buildings having side wall members, one of which may constitute a downturned part of a roof member that extends in vertical alinenient with the side walls, the principal object of the invention being to provide an effectual joint for the alining members. v
It is also an object of the present invention to combine with such alining members a suitable drain or eaves trou h.
In accomplishing these o jects I have provided improved details of structure the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:-
Figure I is a perspective view of a portion of a sheet metal building containing my improvements and equipped with an eaves trough in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. II is a sectional perspective View through the roof and side wall of the building, illustrating the locking arrangement of a trough therewith.
Fig. III is a perspective view of a modified form of joint and trough construction.
Fig. IV is a sectional view through the roof and wall sections, showing another modification of the joint and trough.
Fig. V 1s a similar view illustrating a modification of the construction shown in Fig. IV.
Referring more in detail to the drawingsz- 1 designates a sheet metal building of ordinary construction comprising roof sections 2 and side wall sections 3 having box joints 4; the roof sections having downwardly curved ends 5 in vertical aline- Specification of Letters Patent.

ment with the side sections 3 and perma sired, but which is here shown only along one side; the said trough comprising a vertical outer wall 8 a horizontal base 9 and a back plate 10, the latter having an offset portion forming a shoulder 11 which projects between the side and roof members of sections and has a vertical flange 12 adapted to fitsnugly against the inner faces of the downturned members of the roof sections.
In order to secure the trough in position to lock the roof and wall sections securely together at the same time, I provide the connecting plate 15 which extends longitudinally along the joint of the roof and side walls and overlies the inner flange 12 of the trough, the bolts 16 projecting through the lower edge of the plate 15, whereby the plate is securely fastened to the lower wall sections, and through the upper edge of the plate, through the trough flange 12, and through the downturned ends 5 of the roof sections to join all the parts secured together.
I also preferably provide the outer wall 8 of the trough with a rolled head 8 which stiflens and strengthens the trough and prevents its kinking while being assembled with the wall sections.
With this construction it will be seen that the trough may seat tightly against the lower wall sections and that the offset portion of the back trough wall securely supports the trough between the sections so that it may catch all moisture that may drip from the upper sections. It is also apparent that the plate 15 not only serves to anchor the roof and wall sections together, and secure the trough in place, but also substantially stiflens the building walls.
It is apparent also that the exterior form of the trough or drain may be modified as desired without departing from the invention, the forms here shown, however, being preferable on account of their simplicity.
In the modified form of trough shown in edge downturned to form an anchor plate 15 and'to receive the bolts 16 to anchor the parts together as in the previouscase.
Fig. IV illustrates another formof trough Consisting of a single piece'o'f metalb'ent on itself to form anlup'turned outer wall -20,
which "extends inwardly bet-ween the roof and wallsections and' has laterally turned ears '21-22 for receiving 1 bolts 23' whereby Fig. V" shows the'same trough in an 'in- 'verted" position adapting it'for' use-as a weather strip orthe like.
Assuming the trough to be s'o constructed,
'it'will be seen that it may-be easily irr stalled by the ordinary Workman, 'that it provides a water-proof joint and thatthe back plates 15, When attached as described,
" substantially *stifien (the building and enharms the" appearance 1 of the structure.
; wall and roof seotions the latter having downturned ends cooperating with the Wall sections, a dram member located along the exterlor of the wall and comprlslng a vert1- cal-back member extended between the roof and wall sections, a plate overlapping the 2L 1J2t0811t ends of tl'ie roof-and wallsectlons onthe inner faces thereof and anchor members extended through said plate; trough, -1-o0=ana wall "sections forthepurpose set forth. 7
the trough is anchored inpos'itionto eatch the drip from'the roof sections.
2: A sheet metal building comprisingside --wall "and-roof sections, the latter having do'wnturn'ed endscooperating with the side walls-,an eaves trough comprising a vertical *baok wall liaving a longitudinally extend- -"ing ,-"'ofiset shoulder seatedbetweensaid roof andwall sections, and a plate -secured-to the trough and' to thewallseetions for anchori'ngthe said troughte said roof and Wall sections.
In testimony whereofI aflix my signature.
