FLASHING.
Specification of Letters Patent.

in connection with a chimney, or otherwise where flashings usually are employed.
More particularly, the invention is intended as an improvement of a flashing forming the subject matter of an a plication filed February 17, 1920, Serial umber 359,273.
The general object of my invention isto promote facility in the proper installation of a flashing" and the securing of the same in position as well as to improve the flashing in various particulars and provide for ventilating the space beneath the flashing owing to the sweating of flashing at the interior and to provide a flashing that will be effective for its purpose and one that may be wholly or partially removable in making repairs in the flashing or on the adjacent building parts.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawamples of the invention.
Figure 1 is an edge view of the flashing applied to a building at the siding, parts of the biulding being in section;

Referring at first to the form of the invention as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, my improved flashing includes two mating elements, one, 10, here shown as of approximately Z-shape, presenting edge portions in the form of flanges, the one flange 11 having considerable area and in this form of the invention being adapted to lie beneath the material to which the flashing is applied, as for example, an overlapping siding A adjacent to a vertical window frame part B. The outer flange l2 terminates in a curved edge 18 adapted to receive interiorly the corresponding turned over rounded tubular edge portion 14 of the second element, 15 which, in this instance, isadapted to lie at the surface of the material. The intermediate web of the Z- shaped element 10 lies in the joint between the frame strip B and the siding A and the element 15 extends across the joint. The interlocking of the turned over flanges or interlocking edge portions 13, 14c establishes a hinge connection between the elements 10 and 15 as indicated by the dotted line, Fig. 2. Also, the one member 14 may be entered in the other member 13 by a sliding movement and may be similarly withdrawn. In practice, the element 10 is applied and secured in position with the securing of the siding A and the second element 15 having been engaged therewith and properly positioned may be secured by a nail C or other fastener.
The outer element of the flashing has members 17 toconform it to the surface pre sented by the overlapping siding A. These members 17 are separate from the outer ele ments (15) in order that members 17 having a particular conformation to suit the job in hand may be provided in said element 15. In the illustrated example the members 17 13, 14 are so shaped and proportioned that an air space is provided between the same connnunicating with the space between the cover 15 and the outer flange 12, and said outer edge member 13 is formed with ventilating apertures 22 so that the sweating or moisture deposited within the flashing may be'dissipate The form, of the invention as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is adapted to a shingle roof or the like at the edge. In this case the approximately Z-shaped element 10 corresponding generally with the element 10 lies on the surface of the roof while hingedly connectedelement 15 corresponding generally with the element 15 lies beneath the roof shingles. The hinged and sliding connections are established by the hinge members 13*, 14 so that after the element 15 on the frame is placed in position and the roof and shingles applied over the same, the element 10 can be connected with the element 15 and lowered onto the roof. In carrying out the invention as in Figs. 4 and 5 the outer element 10 has the member 17 toconform to the profile of the roof instead of having the corresponding members 17 on the ele ment 15 as in the first-described construction. The members 17 are each formed with a returned edge portion 18 in hook form to make a seam connection with the reversely turned edge 16 on the flange 11 of element 10*, said flange corresponding otherwise with the flange 11 and being suitably fastened as by nails F. The element 15 which slides beneath the shingles may be secured by nails D or otherwise. I prefer to secure the element 10? by fasteners 19 rigidly attached to the element 15. and rising therefrom, said fasteners presenting a length to be passed through apertures 20 in the element 10 and turned down at the outside as clearly shown in Fig. 5.
I have indicated. nails D fastening the element 15 and nails E fastening the shingles A.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 6 to 10 which shows the flashing applied to a pitch roof and chimney, the elements 10 and 15 are provided, hingedly connected by turned-over edge portions 13, 14", one 'of said elements being adapted to enter the material of the chimney and the. other adapted to lie at the outside. The element 15 is made flat to lie in the cement joints F of the brick chimney G and in this running'in series in step form along those sides of the chimney corresponding-withthe pitch of the roof. At their lower edges the material of the flashing elements 10 is returned on itself at the inside as at 23 and again returned outwardly as at 24 parallel with the body of the element 10 to thereby form a channel receiving the upper edge of the sheathing H or other roofing material, the channel serving to hold the paper, tin, or other roofing material. At the lower side of the chimney on the pitch roof, the element 10 corresponding generally with the element 1O hangs pendent from an element 15 entered in the lower cement joint of the chimney, the two elements extending substantially the full width of the chimney and the lower edge of the element 10 receiving the roofing material H, it being understood that said element 10 has a channel formed by the described members 23, 24. To connect adjacent elements 10 a lip or tongue 25 on the side edge of one of said elements enters between the return portion 23 and the body of the other element. To connect adjacent elements 10, 10 at a corner of the chimney, said element 10 has at its lower edge a lip or tongue 25 bent approximately at right angles, to lie at the inner side of the element 10,between the body of the latter and the returned portion 23 thereof.
In all cases, the flashing elements 10 and 15; 10 and 15 10 and 15*; 10 and 15 are connected by the interlocking curved edges to have a sliding hinge connection permitting engagement to be effected between the respective elements after the one has been applied to the building and securely fastened. The invention of the present application resides in, the improved feature of the attachable members 17 or 17" to conform the outer flashing element to the surface of the siding, roofing, or the like, in the ventilating means, and in the specific embodiments of the invention herein illustrated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A flashing comprising an element adapted to be entered in the building structure, and a coacting element to lie at the outer surface of the building material, said elements presenting spaced turned-over interlocking edges having vent openings, the space between the turned over edges communicating with the interior of the flashing to ventilate the body of the flashing by said vent openings in the interlocking edges.
2. A flashing comprising an element adapted to be entered in the material of a building, and an outer element; together with means forming a hinged connection between said elements, there being vent openings at the hinge and communicating with the interior of the flashing to ventilate the latter.
3. A flashing including an element adap ed to lie at the surface of the material to which the flashing is applied, a holding flashing element with which the first element is connected, and means on the first-mentioned element adapted to receive members to conform to the surface of the material to which the flashing is applied.
4:. A flashing comprising an element adapted to lie on the surface of the material to which the flashing is applied, a second flashing element to which the first element is adapted to be secured, and separate members fitting the first element and adapted to conform to the surface of the material to which the flashing is applied, said members and said first-mentioned element having coengaging means to engage the one with the other, so that said members of various forms may be applied to said first-mentioned element.
5. A flashing comprising an element adapted to be entered in the material of a building, and an element adapted to lie on the outer surface of the building, means detachably connecting said elements, and means on the outer element at the free edge thereof adapted to receive roofing; together with inner and outer elements at an angle to the first-mentioned elements, the second mentioned outer element being connected with the adajcent first-mentioned outer element, so that the respective elements lie at adjacent sides of the structure.
