UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUsTAV VINTscHGEn, oF NEW YORK, N. YQ
'IMPRovEMENT' IN PlcTuRE-NAus.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,566, dated March 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAv VINTSCHGER, of the city, county, and State ot' New York,
'have invented a new and useful Improvement in Picture-Nails 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part ot' this specilication, in Which- Figure l represents a vertical central section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ot' the same. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view ofthe supporting-plate of the head.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a picture-nail having between its head and the plate which supports said head a disk ot' sheet metal, provided with a central hole and with a series ot'radial slots, the supporting-plate of the head being provided with a hole to guide the nail to the retaining-disk in such a manner that the segments situated between the radial slots ofthe retaining-disk engage with the screw-thread of the nail, and as the nail is inserted through the hole of the supporting-plate and turned round a firm connection is e'ected between the head and the nail.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the head ot' my picture-nail, which rests in the supporting-plate a, this plate being provided with a ilange that is pressed over the edge of the head so as to etect a firm connection. Between the head and the 4supporting-plate is situated a disk, b, made of sheet metal, and provided with a centra-l hole, c, (see Fig. 3,)
from which radiate a series of slots, d. The segments situated between these slots are slightly bent upward, (see Fig. 1,) and the hole c in the disk bis made of such a size that the inner edges of said segments engage with the screw-threads at the end of the nail B. The supporting' plate a is provided with a ceutral hole that forms a guide to conduct the nail to the hole in the retaining-disk; and it also serves to steady the head after the same has been screwed on the nail.
The retaining-disk b, as above described, is easily manufactured, and the inner edges of the segments between the radial slots d readily accommodate themselves to the threads of the nail whenever the head is applied to said nail; and, furthermore, by combining the guidehole ot' the supporting-plate with the reta-ining-disk the connection between thc head and the nail is firmly retained in position.
I do not claim a picture-nail having a circumferential groove near its head for interlocking with the spring ends of the base-plate that support-s a porcelain cap, as such is not my invention; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The retaining-disk b, provided with a series of radial slots, d, in combination with the supporting-plate a, head A, and screw-headed nail B, all the parts being constructed substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
