CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
SHEET-PILING MECHANISM.
Application filed September 22, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT BROADMEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Piling Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to means for piling sheets of paper, and is particularly intended for use in connection with a ruling machine, but of course is not restricted to employment with that particular apparatus.
One of the primary objects of the present invention is to provide means whereby each sheet delivered to the pile will be supported in spaced relation to the pile until discharged from the delivering means, thereby avoiding the sliding of one sheet upon the other and the consequent smearing of the lines or other matter in case the ink has not dried.
Another object is to provide simple and effective means for maintaining the sheets in the pile with their edges even. A structure that has been found satisfactory for this purpose, is illustrated in the accompany ing drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of a lay-boy or piling mechanism, constructed in accordance with the present invention. I
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same,
Fig. 3 is an end elevation, I
Fig. 1 is a detail sectional view showing the mounting for oneof the evener boards or blades.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
A suitable frame is employed, including side boards 5 having offset lowered rear end portions 6. The said portions have transverse slats 7 connecting the same, forming a bed or support for the pile of sheets. The sheets to be piled are delivered to this bed by suitable conveying mechanism, consisting in the present embodiment of upper and lower sets of coacting endless bands 8 oper ating around pulleys or band wheels 9, and driven from any suitable source of power by a belt 10 that passes around a pulley 11 secured to one of the rear lower band wheels 9. It will be understood that the sheets of paper are carried successively from a ruling Specification of Letters Patent.

or other machine to the bands, and are delivered by said bands over the bed.
It will be understood that the sheets are thin and flexible, and consequently their tendencyas they come from the bands is to drop down so that the advance edge of each slides across the surface of the preceding one beneath it that has already been delivered to the bed. Therefore if the ink on the upper surface of the under sheet is still wet the advancing sheet is apt to smear it upon the under sheet. To prevent this, substantially horizontal tracks 12 are employed that are located longitudinally of and outside the co acting stretches of the conveyer bands 8, the said tracks preferably comprising bars having rounded upper surfaces. The inner ends of the bars are beveled as shown at 13, and their outer ends project beyond the conveyer bands well over the bed. The sheets to be deposited are considerably wider than the distance between the sets of bands 8, and consequently as a sheet passes between the bands its margins will ride upon the tracks 12, thesetracks causing the said margins to curl upwardly. As a consequence the portion of the sheet passing beyond the bands 8 will be given a dished contour, which will prevent the front edge dropping, and this formation will be maintained until the rear portion of the sheet is discharged from the Immediately the sheet will drop downwardly, the edges passing between the tracks 12, and said sheet will then flatten out upon the pile beneath it.
Means are also provided for keeping the pile with the side edges of the sheets even, and for this purpose the following mecha nism is employed. Longitudinally movable rods 14 are mounted transversely of and be neath the bed, said rods being each slidably mounted at one end in a bearing bracket 15, their opposite ends being connected to the opposite ends of a swinging lever 16 that is fulcrumed between its ends, as shown at 17. Thislever is furthermore provided with a crank arm 18, and said crank arm has a link connection 19 with the depending arm 20 of a bell crank 21 that is fixed to a rock shaft 22. The crank arm 21 has a link connection 23 with a crank pin 24 carried by the pulley 11. The rock shaft 22 has collars 25 adjustably mounted thereon, and said collars carry upstanding fingers 26 that are thus caused to swing back and forth as the rock shaft is operated. Evener boards or blades 27 are movably mounted on the bed, and each is adjustably fixed to one of the longitudinally moving rods 14. To this end, each blade has secured thereto a collar 28 through which one of the rods 14 passes, the collar having a set screw 29 that serves to fix the collar and consequently the blade or board to the rod in any desired position. An outer stop 30 is suitably mounted on the bed and constitutes a rear wall for the pile of sheets.
The operation of this portion of the structure is as follows :-lVhen the conveyer is in operation, the sheets as already explained are delivered one by one on to the bed, and the operation of the conveyer results in the transmission of movement to the rock shaft 22, causing the fingers 26 to be swung back and forth, thus insuring that the front and rear edges of the sheets are vertically alined respectively. At the same time motion is transmitted by means of the link 19 and lever 16 to the rods 14:. Said rods are caused to simultaneously reciprocate, but in opposite directions. The boards or blades 27 will be correspondingly moved, thus striking the edges of the sheets as they are deposited and properly alining said sheets.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In sheet piling apparatus, the combination with a conveyer for moving sheets successively in an edge-wise direction, of spaced tracks overlapping the conveyer and extending beyond the same to support the margins of the said sheets beyond the conveyer until released thereby.
2. In sheet piling apparatus, the-combination with a support for the piled sheets, of means for delivering the sheets over the support, said means terminating short of-the rear end of the same, and means extending beyond the delivery means and above the support for supporting the margins of the sheets above the support while the sheets are being delivered thereabove by the deliverlng means.
' 3. In sheet piling apparatus, the combination with a support for the piled sheets, of an endless conveyer for delivering sheets longitudinally above the support, and tracks extending beyond the conveyer and over the support for supporting the margins of the sheets delivered by the conveyer until discharged from said conveyer.
4. In sheet piling apparatus, the combination with a support for the piled sheets, of sets of upper and lower coa'cting conveyer bands for delivering sheets above the support, and tracks extending alongside the bands and extending beyond the same over the support to support the margins of the sheets delivered by the conveyer bands until discharged from the same.
5. In sheet piling apparatus, the combina tion with spaced endless conveyers for moving sheets successively in an edgewise direction, of spaced tracks located along the outer sides of said conveyors and projecting beyond the same to support the margins of the sheets as they are projected beyond the conveyers and until the rear ends are released from said conveyers.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT BROADMEYER.
