THE COLUMBIA FLANOIJDAWI CO" WAIHTNG'PON, D- C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT EDWARD SI-IIRLOW, OF GLEN HUNTLY, NEAR MELBOURNE, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES CLASON GATES, F MELBOURNE, VICTORIA,
AUSTRALIA.
FLIER ATTACHMENT FOR PRINTING, WAXING, CUTTING, AND LIKE MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT EDWARD SHIRLOW, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Glen Huntly, near Melbourne, in the State of Victoria and Commonwealth of Australia, foreman, have invented certain new and useful Improved Flier Attachments for Printing, Waxing, Cutting, and the like Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improved flier mechanism applicable to printing, waxing, cutting and the like machines.
The improved flier attachment has been specially devised to increase the speed at which the paper or other sheets are delivered and packed, so providing an attachment of greater utility than those at present in use.
The essential feature embodied in this invention consists in the use of a rocking gate or flier so arranged and operated that the sheets fed by the tapes from the printing, waxing or cutting machine are delivered to receiving tables on each to and fro motion of the said fiy gate, that all size sheets may be delivered and packed, suitable means being provided for adjusting the various parts of the device.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood it will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a view in vertical central section, and
Fig. 2 is a View in side elevation of the improved flier attachment, while Fig. 3 is a plan view in section taken on the line aa Fig. 2.
According to this invention the flier attachment frame 1 connects by means of bolts 2 the waxing, cutting or printing or like frame 3, the frame 1 being fitted with the su porting stays 4 and a base 5.
he flier frame is formed with two diagonally disposed receiving tables 6, the angles of which are capable of adjustment, preferably by slotted brackets 7 and adjusting bolts 8 connecting the lower portion of the main frame 1.
These tables 6 are disposed within the frame 1 on either side of the central sup porting standards 9 of the frame, while a supporting plate 10 is held in position by Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed June 1, 1918. Serial No. 237,777.
the brackets 11 attached to the support 4 of the said frame 1.
' The tables 6 are provided with the usual jogging attachments which maintain the sheets delivered from the feeding tapes in the proper packed position.
The fly gate 12 consists preferably of a plurality of spaced parallel members held in position by the cross plates 13 bolted together, and also by the cross pieces 14.
The gate 12 connects by means of the loops 15 a rock shaft 16 capable of operating the gate 12 to and fro alternately toward and away from each of the respective tables 6 above mentioned.
The necessary throw and speed is obtained by an arm 17 connecting a shaft 16 while a connecting rod 18 adjustably connects the arm 17 and an eccentric spindle 19 on a spindle 20 driven by the sprocket 21 and chain 22 from any suitable counter shaft of the machine to which the flier attachment is applied.
The tape feed consists of a pair of superposed rollers 23 carrying the transversely arranged endless tapes 24, from which the sheets are fed to and between the vertical endless tapes 25 carried by the rollers 26, 27, one roller 28 carrying the upper endless tape 24. The rollers 27 and 28 are supported to the central standards 9 by brackets29 capable of vertical adjustment to regulate the tension of the endless bands 24, 25.
The rollers 27, 28 are driven by spur gear from the inner roller 27 which is driven by sprocket and chain gear from any convenient driven shaft of the machine to which the flier is attached.
In operation the sheets are fed from the printing, cutting, waxing or the like machine between the tapes 24 which carry the sheets above the supporting plate 10 to the vertical tapes 25. The sheets are carried down between the endless vertical tapes 25 and are carried by the rocking fly gate on each to and fro movement and packed alternately upon the respective tables 6, it being obvious that the endless vertical tapes 25 are so disposed immediately inside the vertical central standards 9 of the frame 1 as to al low of clearance for the operation of the fly gate 12.
A flier attachment constructed, arranged and operating as above described will be of great utility owing to the fact that each to i and fro movement of the gate carries and stacks a sheet, the capacity being gaged according to the speed at Which the mechanism is geared.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a flier attachment for printing, Waxing, cutting, and like machines, the combination of a rocking flier gate, two inclined receiving tables symmetrically disposed With respect to said gate, means for varying the inclination of each table, means for vary- 7 ing the travel of the gate, transversely arranged feeding tapes, vertical feeding tapes on either side of said gate adapted to receive sheets from said transverse tapes, and means for adjusting the tension of said tapes, the tables being adapted to receive varying sizes of sheets!
