MACHINE FOR MAKING STRAW PADS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 31, 1910.
Application filed December 13, 1907. Serial No. 406,334.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHESTER M. FRAZEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hammond, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Machine for Making Straw Pads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for making straw pads to be employed in packing furniture for shipping and other similar purposes.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings in which;
Figure l is a plan view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
In these drawings A andB represent suitable frames slightly spaced apart and the frame B carries a feed lattice G upon which the straw is placed and from which it is taken by a toothed roller C which also acts as a combing roll. The straw is then passed down a suitable inclined guide way D which conveys the straw between two feed rollers E and E, over the first one of which the belt D works. It is then delivered to a slightly inclined table F carried by the frame A and on which is mounted a sectional folder F, said folder being split longitudinally as shown in Fig. 1. The frame A also carries the roll of paper G and the paper is carried from said roll over a curved guide H and upwardly over a roller H placed immediately below a transverse slot F in the table F. From the roller H the paper travels to the folder F underneath the straw which is delivered to the table and upon the traveling sheet of paper. In the folder the paper becomes folded so as to inclose the straw and the straw and paper come from the folder in the form of a continuous pad which passes under guide and pressing rollers J between two of which is mounted a sewing machine J 2 of any desired kind. The rollers J are driven by a gear train J, and pulleys K are also employed to drive the feed rollers E and E and the gear train J and suitable pulleys are also employed with the necessary belting for driving the lattice C and roller C. The manner of imparting rotation to any of the above mentioned rollers is not material as any of the well-known means in common use may be employed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a machine for making straw pads, a substantially horizontal endless conveyor for delivering straw, a slightly inclined table having its highest end in the plane of the rear end of said conveyor, and spaced therefrom, a roller mount-ed in the space between said conveyor and said table, the upper face of said roller being flush with the upper faces of both conveyor and table, a curved guide, a roll of paper carried below the table, the paper running over said curved guide and passing through the space between the conveyor and the table and over the roller, a folder arranged upon the table immediately in the rear of said roller, a plurality of pressing rollers mounted transversely across the rear portion of the table, and a sewing mechanism arranged between two of said pressing rollers.
