To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, BANNER J. JOHNSON, a citizen'of the United States, residing' at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gates, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in gates.
The obj ect of my invention is to provide a gate which is Simple inv construction, which is strong and durable and cheap to manufacture, which mayy be erected by an unskilled person, whichfis not liable to get out of order, andl which may be easily operated in all kinds of weather.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred'embodiment of my invention,

1 designates a. vertical post 'set in the ground and having" extending through it two parallel horizontal tubes 2 `and 3,y dirposed one above the other, and having their opposite set of ends'extending through another vertical post comprisingtwo vertical members i which are spaced apart from each other and which are mounted at their lower ends in the ground, and have clamped between them by transverse bolts 5 two pairs of blocks 6, between which are respectively clamped the front ends of the tubes 2 and A horizontal bar 7 may connect the upper ends of the two members 4 and the upper end of the post. 1.
8 designates a gate provided at its front end and near its lower side with a bracket 9 in which is mounted a supporting roller 1() adapted for travel on any smooth surface, such as concrete 11 embedded in the ground.
The rear end of the gate 8 has attached to it near its lower side a bracket 12 in which is mounted a supporting roller 13 which travels on the tube 3.
Loosely slidable respectively in the tubes 2 and 3, are two horizontal parallel guide rods 14 and 15, the front end of the rod 14 being rigidly attached by two clamping nuts 16 to the front end of the gate 8.
The front endofthe guide rod 15 eX- tends through a downwardly projecting arm 17 of the bracket 9, to which arm the front end of the guide rod 15 is secured by two nuts 18, whichbeark respectively against the front and rear sides of the arm 17. n
The posts 1 and i maybe part of a `fence to which are attached the fence wires 19.
In the operation of my invention, the roller 10 ruiming on the concrete surface 11 and the roller 13 running on the tube support the gate 8, andv therrods 14 and 15 serve asy guides for the front end of the gate. The bracket 9 serves the triple'function of a brace for the lower front corner of the gate, `as a bearing for the roller 10, and as a support for the front end of the guide rod 15. The guide rods 141 'and 15 running in the tubes 2 and 3 prevent the roller 13 from disengagement with the tube 3 in case the latter becomes coated with ice.
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as many modifications, within the scope of the appendedclaims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.

In a gate, the'combination with two posts, of two parallel horizontal tubes connecting and supported by said posts, anda gate having two guide rods respectively loosely and slidably fitted in said tubes, and having two supporting rollers, one of which is adapted to travel on one of said tubes and the other of which is adapted totravel on a suitable supporting surface on the ground.
2. In a gate, the combination with two posts, of two parallel horizontal tubes disposed one above the other and connecting and supported by said posts, and a gate having two guide rods attached to the gate near the forward end thereof and respectively loosely slidably fitted in said tubes, the gate having two supporting rollers attached respectively to the forward and rear ends of the gate, the rear roller being arranged to travel on the lower one of said tubes, and the forward roller being adapted to travel upon a suitable surface on the ground.

In a gate, the combination with two posts, of two parallel horizontal tubes dis posed one above the other and extending through and supported by said posts, and a gate having two brackets attached respectively to the front and rear ends of the gate, two rollers respectively mounted on said brackets, the rear roller being arranged for travel on the lower one of said tubes and the front roller being adapted to travel on a i clamped between the two sets of blocks, and

5. In a gate, the combination with aV post comprising two upright members spaced apart from each other and two sets of blocks, each consisting of two blocks held clamped to and between said members, of two horizontal parallel tubes respectively clamped between said two sets ot blocks, a gate slidable between said two members and having two guide rods respectively slidable in said tubes and attached at their front ends to the front end of the gate, the gate having two supporting rollers mounted respectively at its front and rear ends, the rear roller being adapted for travel on one or said tubes, and the front roller being adapted for travel on any smooth supporting surface, and a post supporting the other set of ends of said tubes.

In a gate, the combination with two posts, of a horizontal tube supported thereby, and a gate having a guide rod slidable in said tube and attached at its front end to the front end of the gate, and two rollers mounted respectively at the front and rear ends ot the gate, one of the rollers being adapted to travel on said tube and the other roller being adapted to travel on any smooth supporting surface.
7. In agate, the combination with two posts, of a horizontal tube supported there by, and a gate having a guide rod slidable in said tube, the gate having attached to its iront lower corner an angular bracket embracing said corner, the front end of the guide rod being attached to said bracket, and a supporting roller mounted in said bracket.

In a gate, the combination with two posts, of a horizontal tube supported thereby, and a gate having attached to its front and rear ends respectively two brackets, two rollers respectively mounted in said brackets, one roller boing adapted for travel on said tube and the other roller being adapted to travel on any smooth supporting surface, and a guide rod slidable in said tube and having its front end attached to said iront bracket.
9. In a gate, the combination with two posts, of a horizontal tube supported thercr by, and a gate having its front lower corner embraced by a bracket having a depending arm, a supporting roller mounted in said bracket, and a guide rod slidable in said tube and having its front end attached to said depending arm.

In a gate, the combination with two posts, of a horizontal tube supported thereby, a horizontal Supporting member mounted on said posts, and a gate having a guide rod slidable in said tube and provided with two carrying rollers, one adapted to travel on a suitable support and the other adapted for travel on said supporting member.
