GARTER.
APPLICATlou FILED 1AN.12.1920.
Patented Jan. 11, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE ROTTMAN, NEVI YORK, N. Y.
Application filed January 12, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnoner. ROTTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in garters for encircling the human leg and supporting a sock or stocking.
An object of my invention is to provide a garter comprising a band, the ends of which can be secured together around the leg of the wearer, without especial fastening devices, such as hooks or clasps; this result being attained preferably by means of a portion of the garter to which the sock or stocking is attached.
A further object of my invention is to provide a garter that can be inexpensively and efliciently made and designed to engage a sock or stocking in such a manner that the cloth of the sock or stocking will not be torn or ripped or worn through by contact with any of the parts of the garter.
Further objects of my invention will appear from the following description which includes the accompanying drawings, and
the novel features of my improved garter are clearly set forth in the claims appended hereto. The drawings, however, merely show the best embodiment of my invention now known to me, and I do not wish to be limited to the construction actually illustrated thereon; but reserve the right to make changes which are within the scope and spirit of my invention as the claims define same.
On the drawings Figure 1 is a view showing a garter according to my invention, with the ends unfastened;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the garter with its ends secured together; y
Fig. 3 is a top view of the ends of the garter as shown in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a view of the hose grip of the garter showing a rubber cushion held thereby;
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5, Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing a modified construction; and
Fig. 7 is a view of a modified form of garter.
vSpecification' of Letters Patent.

The same numerals identify the same parts throughout.
The garter comprises a band 1, engaged by an ordinary sliding buckle 2 to which one end 3 of the garter is affixed. The end 3 and buckle 2 provide a loop 4, and by slipping the buckle2along the band 1,the loop 4 can be made longer 0r shorter; and the size of the garter can be increased or decreased at will.
To the other end 5 of the band 1, I attach a strip 6; this strip preferably eXteI1ding at right angles tothe band 1. When the band 1 is in horizontal position and the strip 6 is straightened out, this strip will extend from end 5 in an upward direction. At its outer extremity the strip will carry a fastening device, such as a button 7 mounted in a frame 8 attached to the strip 6, and the button will be covered with a rubber sleeve 9. The button 7, the frame 8 and the sleeve 9 will be of ordinarv well-known construction and may be attached to the strip 6 in any suitable way.
To the opposite or lower end of the strip 6, l attach a fastening device having the form of a metal frame or hose grip 10, which can be made by stamping; and has a vertical slot 11 which is wider at its upper end. This frame 10 with the slot 11 may also be of well-known construction and is adapted to -engage the button 7 by having the button passed through the upper enlarged end of the slot 11 and slipped down into the narrow portion of the slot at the bottom thereof. Of course, other suitable material besides metal for the frame 10 can be used.
To make use of this garter the wearer puts it around his leg and passes the strip 6 through the loop 4 and then draws a part of the stocking 12 over the button 7. The button with the portion of the stocking thereover is then slipped through the upper part of the slot 11 and the frame 10 pulled to make the narrow part of the slot press the cloth of the stocking against the rubber 9 covering button 7. The stocking is thus securely held, and the garter is attached to the leg and the stocking attached to the garter in a single operation. Hooks or fastening devices for connecting the ends of the garter together, can therefore be dispensed with; thereby reducing the cost of manufacture, while at the same time the garter fits atly and comfortably against the leg of the wearer `and presents no lumps or projections which can rub or irrit-ate the skin.
The lower end of the frame 10 can be prol place, merely the operation of turning over the projection 13 is required.
Fig. 1 shows a modified construction, wherein the f ame 10 is made of bent wire .or other material, and the rubber 1l is secured to the lower end 15 of this .frame by turning over the point thereof and mak ing this point-grip the rubber and hold it tight.
In Fig. 'T I show a garter similar to that illustrated in F ig. 1, but with an extra hose or stocking support comprising fastening` devices as above set forth. This additional hose support is attached to a pad 15. To one end of this pad is secured a band 1G, carrying a buckle 2 to which the outer extremity of the band is affixed making a loop 4. it the other end of the pad is fastened a band 17, carrying the strip 6 and the other hose support. This strip may be elastic and the bands 16 and 17 nonelastic. When put on,
believe to be new and desire to secure and' protect by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A garter comprising a band having a loop at one end, and a transverse strip at the opposite end, cooperating fastening devices at the opposite ends of said strip, the garter being adapted to have its ends secured together by passing the strip through the loop, and have a sock or stocking attached to the garter by bringing the fastening devices into operative position, to put the garter in place and secure the stocking thereto.
2. A garter comprising a band having a loop at one end, and a transverse strip at the opposite end, cooperating fastening devices at the opposite ends of said strip, the garter being adapted to have its ends secured together by passing the strip through the loop, and have a sock or stocking attached to theygarter by bringing the fastening devices into operative position.` and additional fastening devices between said strip and said loop.
In testimony whereof', I have signed my naine to this specification this 2nd da)v of December, 1919.
