UNITED STATES TERENTIE DAVIDENIA, OF DETROIT, llIICHIGAN.
COMBINATION-LOCK FOR POCKET-BOOKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4, 1921.
Application filed July 9, 1920. Serial No. 394,939.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TERENTIE DAVIDENIA, a citizen of lt-ussia, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks for Pocket-Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pocketbooks or purses and it consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
It is the principal object of the invention to produce a pocket-book or purse which is provided with a combination locking means, so that it may only be opened by persons having knowledge of the combination.
Vith this and other objects in view my invention is illustrated in its preferred form in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end view of a purse constructed according to the present invention, closed.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the purse, opened.
Fig. 3 is a side view of a purse constructed according to the present invention.
Fig. 1 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 5 shows inside View part of the frame of the purse.
Fig. 6 is a section along line 66 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 7 is a detail view of a locking bar with the presser button and one of the combination disks.
The purse 10 of any desired suitable material is held in the customary well known manner in a pair of frames 11 and 12 hingedly connected at their lower ends as at 13 and 14 respectively. The upper bar 15 of one of the frames, for instance 11, is provided with catches 16 and 17 and the other bar, 18 with corresponding hooks 19.
The hooks 19 are normally held in engagement with the catches 16 and 1'? by a lock-bar or latch 20, the ends of which normally rest upon the lower flanges 21 and 22 of a pair of stems 23 and 2 1, the upper ends of which carry disks 25 and 26 bearing on their upper faces combination characters or the like. The flanges 21 and 22 are provided in their outer peripheries with curved recesses 27 and 28 allowing the ends of the bar orlatch 20 to come out of engagement with the upper faces of the flanges when it is depressed by means of the stem 29 of a presser knob 30 also provided with combination characters on its upper face, however as a decoy only. The lower face of the knob 30 rests upon the upper face of a flat spring 81 arranged in spaced relation to the upper bar of the frame in approximately the center part thereof and having its foot flanges 32 and 83 secured to the frame 15 as at 34; and 35, while the lower end of the stem normally engages the bar or latch 20.
From the foregoing description the operation of my device will be clear. Assuming the pocket-book or purse is closed as illustrated in Fig. 1. If it is now desired by a person who has knowledge of the combination to open the purse, the disk 26 is rotated until the respective character as for instance C in the present case, indicates that the recess 28 of the lower flange 22 is in alinement with the end of the bar 20. Now the manipulation is repeated with respect of the other knob or disk 25 on which the letter K in the present instance indicates that also the other end of the bar 20 is in alinement with the recess 27 of the lower flange 21 on the stem of this disk. If now the knob or central disk 30 is depressed, it will depress the spring 31 and the bar 20 out of engagement with the hooks 19 so that the purse may now be opened by a lateral pull.
To close the purse these manipulations are made in the reversed order.
It will of course be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the precise construction or arrangement shown or described, it being clear that many changes in details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a combination lock for purses of the character described, a. pair of frames, means for normally locking the upper bars of said frames over the purse, two combination disks near the outer ends of one of said frames at the upper face thereof, stems for said disks and foot flanges on said stems provided with curved recesses at their peripheries corresponding with predetermined combination characters on said disks, a latch bar normally resting with its ends on said flanges, a decoy disk between said -combination disks, a stem on said disk engaging with its lower end said latch, and means for raising said decoy disk after its depression to disengage the ends of said latch from said flanges when the combination disks are so positioned that the predetermined characters thereon indicate the position of the recess in said flanges to be in alinement with the ends of said latch.
2. In a combination purse lock of the character described, a pair of frames hingedly connected at their lower ends and adapted to hold the material of the purse, catches on one of said frames and hooks on the other adapted to engage for normally holding the purse closed, a locking latch for said catches and hooks, recessed flanges upon which the ends of said latch normally rest,
assesses stems for said flanges rotatably mounted in one of said frames, disks at the upper ends of said stems carrying combination char acters at their upper faces, predetermined characters indicating the position of the recess in said flanges in alinement with the latch bar ends, a central decoy disk also provided with combination characters on its upper face, a stem on said disk engaging with its lower end said latch, a fiat spring secured with its ends to the upper edge of one of said frames, having its central part raised to engage the lower face of said decoy disk and normally tending to press said ste out of engagement with said latch.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
TERENTIE DAVIDENIA.
