Description

n. m. MUNCASTER.
Pessary Adjuster.
NO. 136,449. PatentedMarch 4,1873.
AM FHOTO-LIIHGGRAHl/G co. m X(0ss0R/vE's am ss) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
()THO M. MUNOASTER, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PESSARY-ADJUST ERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,449, dated March 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTHO M. MUNCASTER, of Washington city, District of Columbia, have invented an instrument for the shaping and adjusting of pessaries to each and every female, of which the following is a specification:
The first part of my invention relates to that portion of the instrument by which an impression is taken and retained of the external parts ofthe female from the symphysis pubis to the anus. The second part of my invention relates to the vaginal portion of the instrument, by which the length of the vagina from the vulva to the anterior and posterior c'ul-de-sac is determined. This portion can be so fastened, when it is in position to the rest of the instrument that when it is withdrawn it not only gives the required length but the relative position of the oul-de-sac, and of the vagina to the external parts. The third part of my invention relates to that part of the instrument which holds the vaginal portion in position, so that when it is removed the pessary can be shaped by said vaginal part, and by external impression, and the proper angle given to it.
Figure l is a perspective view of my instrument with a dotted line, showing the position it takes after an impression is taken. Fig. 2 is a ring which may be attached to the end of D in place of the ball, when preferred. Fig. 3 shows another way by which B and C may be held together, B only having its end flattened and furnished with one transverse slot.
A is a handle, which may be dispensed with if preferred. B is a small rod (flexible) with a slot, M, running vertically through it for the easy play of the vaginal portion of the instrument. It has also a transverse slot, L, for the passage of the screw G. By this screw B and D are held together when the proper position is found. D is the vaginal portion, tipped with a ball, E, or ring 0. D is a bar made of flexible metal, so as to be bent at N,
or furnished with a stilt joint at that point. It has also the end (J flattened, with a slot, K, in it for the passage of the screw G. This end is fastened to the end of B by the screw G, and may be made to take any length and form any angle with H. H is a flexible bar of lead with a slot, I, in it, for the passage through and play in it of the vaginal portion D. This, by being pressed against the female will take and retain an impression of the part required. This may also be made of rubber, fastened to each end of B, a little more curved and lengthened, with small rods attached to it at short intervals by a movable joint. These rods pass through B, which is also squared, and steadied on their exit from it, posteriorly, by small cylinders or square boxes, about half an inch long, and attached to H. When the rubber is pressed against the female the little rods in front of the more projecting parts are pushed further through H and held there by small springs, so that the rubber retains the impression given. The vaginal portion D is held by a slot in the side of H, and kept in position by a screw, as in Fig. 3. O is a ring which may be screwed to D in place of the ball E. P, in Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the end of B, only flattened, and having a transverse slot for the passage of the screw G, which holds it to the end of l). The vertical slot is not used as in Fig. 1.
I claim 1. The combination of the rodD for insertion into the vagina, and part 13 upon which it adjusts both vertically and laterally, all arranged as for the purpose described.
2. In combination with the parts B and D, the flexible piece H, hinged or fastened thereto for taking and retaining an impression of the external genitals, arranged as shown.
OTHO M. MUNGASTER.
