b all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES I. LATTIG, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reclining-Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in reclining chairs, and more particularly to the type embodying movable back and seat portions which are connected for simultaneous equal movements, and it has for its object to afford a novel and improved construction for holding the parts in any adjusted position and for permitting the back and seat portions to be readily adjusted from one position to another.
A further purpose of the invention is to afford a construction that can be manufactured at a reasonable cost and will insure reliable, postive action under all conditions.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and com binations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation, partially in section, of a chair constructed in accordance with my improvements; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view; Fig. 3 is an enlarged bottom plan view, partially in section, showing the locking devices in looking engagement with the adjustable member. Fig. l is a similar view with the locking devices disengaged, Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2, and Fig. G is a detail view of the connection between the back frame and the adjustable member.
Similar reference characters throughout the several views indicate the same parts.
In the present embodiment of the invention there is provided a chair embodying a base frame which includes legs 1 connected by suitable cross strips 2, and side pieces 3 while 4: designates the arms of the chair. The seat frame is indicated at 5, being movably supported at the front of the base frame and provided with a cushion 6. The seat frame is connected with the back frame,
which is designated generally at 7, and provided with cushions 8. back frame have secured thereon bars t) which are slotted at their rear ends at 10 to engage a rod or support 11 secured on the base frame, while 12 are latches pivotally mounted at 13 on the bars 9 and adapted to lockingly engage the support 11 so as to hold the back frame thereon, and at the same time permit its ready removal when desirable. The forward ends of the bars 9 are slotted at 1 1 to receive projections 15 which are carried by the seat frame, thus supporting the rear edge of the seat frame and causing it to be elevated and lowered in accordance with the movements of the back frame forwardly and rearwardly about the support 11.
Attached to the base frame at a point heneath the seat is a guide 16 and arranged. for movement in said guide is an adjustable member preferably in the form of a metal strap 17 which can be held in any adjusted position by the mechanism to be described presently, and is connected to the back frame. To this end, the latter carries a downwardly projecting post 18 at the lower end of which is lined a transverse pin 19 having its ends projecting beyond the sides of the post. The strap 17 has connected thereto a pair of pivoted links 20 and 2.1, their ends being offset to straddlethe post 18. The link 20 is provided with an opening to engage one end of the pin 19, while the link 21 is slotted at 22 to engage the opposite end of the pin as shown in Fig. 6. The link 21 is also slotted at .23 to engage a lateral projection on. the link 20, the head 24 of said projection serving to prevent sep aration of the links 20 and 21 and to thereby hold them. in operative engagement with the post 18. With this construction, it will readily be seen that as the back frame is rocked in one direction or the other by the movement of a person in the chair, it causes a corresponding forward or backward movement of the post 18 which in turn effects sliding of the strap 17 in the guide on the base frame. I
In order to lock the parts in adjusted position, I provide means which operates normally to hold the strap 17 against movement and can be operated to release the same for any desired adjustment. To this end, 1 provide a pair of locking devices such as the The sides of the cam levers 25 and 26 pivotally mounted on the guide and adapted to engage the strap 17 as shown in Fig. 3 to force it tightly against the wall 27. The adjustable memher or strap 17 is parallel to the wall 27 and slides against the same in its adjustment, which is permitted when the locking devices are in the position shown in Fig. 4 so that the locking portions 28 are carried out of contact with the adjustable member. In order to hold the locking devices in normal position I provide a spring 29 connecting their free ends, the spring being attached to pins 30 attached to the ends of the locking devices, which are preferably formed by stamping from sheet metal. The free ends of the locking devices are also connected by a toggle joint consisting of links 30 and 31, and pivotally connected to said toggle joint is a connecting bar 32. The opposite end of the connecting bar 32 is pivoted to an arm 33 of a rock shaft 34 which is journaled vertically at one side of the chair, its upper end being provided with a right angled handle portion 35 disposed immediately under the arm of the chair where it can be conveniently reached.
he parts are shown in normal position in Fig. 3, and to change the adjustment of the back and seat, the handle 35 is moved outwardly, straightening the toggle joint until it assumes the position shown in Fig. 4 and thus releasing the locking devices from engagement with the adjustable member. The parts will be retained in this position until the handle 35 is again operated to break the toggle joint, whereupon the spring 29 automatically moves the locking devices into engagement with the adjustable member and holds the latter in adjusted position.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a reclining chair, the combination with a base frame, of a back frame movable thereon, a guide attached to the base frame, an adjustable member movable in said guide in parallelism to a wall thereof, connections between said member and the back frame, a pair of locking devices pivoted on the guide and cooperating member to force it into engagement with the aforementioned wall, a toggle joint connecting said locking devices and acting when straightened to hold the locking devices disengaged from the adjustable memher, and an operating lever connected to said toggle joint.
2. In a reclining chair, the combination with a base frame, of a back frame movable thereon, a guide attached to the base frame, an adjustable member movable in said guide in parallelism to a wall thereof, connections between said member and the back frame, a pair of locking devices pivoted on the guide and cooperating with said adjustable member to force it into engagement with the aforementioned wall, a toggle joint connecting said locking devices and acting when straightened to hold the locking devices disengaged from the adjustable member, a spring also connecting the locking devices, and an operating lever having. connection with the toggle joint.
