Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1915.
Application filed May 18, 1914. Serial No. 839,380.
T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER ALEXANDER STEWART, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Swift Current, Province of Saskatchewan, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Flows, of which the following is the specification.
This invention relates to plows and the object of the invention is to facilitate the removal of the plowshare for purposes of repair or renewal and to attain this result by a single operation and it consists essentially of the improved plow particularly described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming part of the same.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the plowing element from the rear showing the manner of securing the share to the moldboard. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the moldboard and 'share of the plow. Fig. 3 is a view of the plowing element as seen from below. Fig. 4l is a side elevation of the moldboard and share as seen from the back thereof. Fig. 5 is a cross section on the line 2-2, of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the catch member. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the wedge. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the share, broken away, showing the landside formed integral therewith. Fig. 9 is a perspective view, broken away, showing the moldboard, the landside formed integral therewith and the wearing strip.
The plowing element B embodies the principal features of the invention and comprises the moldboard 3, the beam l adapted to support the said moldboard and the share 5 which in turn is secured to the moldboard in a manner which will be hereinafter de.
scribed. The beam 4: is preferably curved and formed integral with the standard Lia, the lower end of which is rigidly secured by rivets or the like to the landside 6, which in turn is formed integral with the lower part of the moldboard.
7 represents an angle member, one arm of which is fixed to the moldboard3,the other arm being secured to the standard 4a, such angle member being designed to carry the top front part of the moldboard which is further supported near the top by the brace 8, one end of which is fixed to the standard 4 and the other end to the said moldboard. The lower part of the moldboard is supported by the brace 9a one end of which is fixed thereto, the other end being secured to the standard 4a.
9 represents a bracket which is fixed at ne end to the landside 6, the other end belng attached to the moldboard 3, such bracket being strengthened by the strap or brace 10 which is connected at one end to the said bracket and at the other end to the moldboard. This bracket is further pro vided with an orifice 11 intermediate of its ends, the object of which will be made clear hereafter. I
The moldboard is provided with an oriiice 12 extending through the front thereof and is further provided with a reinforcing strip 14C suitably secured to the back thereof.
The landside 6 is preferably tapered toward the front and is provided with a longitudinally extending rectangular tapered recess 15 in its outer face and located near the front thereof, such landside being further provided with a wearing strip 16 which is suitably secured to the outer face thereof by rivets or the like. This wearing strip engages at the point with the share landside 18 and is provided with a longitudinally extending recess or groove 17 in the front edge thereof.
The share 5 is preferably constructed with the share landside 18 formed integral therewith, such share landside being provided with a 4longitudinally extending tapered projecting 19 on the inner face thereof adapted to engage .with the rectangular tapered recess 15 in the landside 6 and is further provided with a tongue 2O adapted to engage with the recess or groove 17 in the wearing strip 16. The share 5 is also provided with a rectangular countersunk orifice 21 which is adapted to register with the orifice in the moldboard when the said share is in position.
22 represents a sleeve which is adapted to engage at its lower end with the orifice 11 in the bracket 9 and be secured thereto by means of the collars 23 and 24 which are designed to engage with opposite faces of the said bracket.
25 represents a screw which is designed to be rotatably mounted in the sleeve 22, the longitudinal movement of the said screw being limited by means of the key pin 26 passing therethrough and located adjacent to the collar .24: and by means of the collar 27 secured to and located near the outer end thereof. The inner end of the screw 25 is designed to make threaded engagement with the orifice 28 in the downwardly extending projection 29 of the provided with transversely extending projections 3l.
32 represents the catch member which is preferably formed with a rectangular tapered head 33 designed to engage with the orifices 2l and 12, the lower end of the said catch member being bifurcated and provided with a roller 34 rotatably mounted Y therein.
In assembling the plowing element B the share 5 is placed in position` so that the tongue 20 will engage with the recess or groove 17 inthe wearing strip and the rectangular tapered projection 19 with the recess 15 in the landslide 6in which position the rectangular' tapered orifice 21 should register with the orifice 12 in the moldboard. The catch member is now placed in position, the head 33 engaging with the orifices 2l and 12, the bifurcated end of the said catch member projecting below the bottom face of the moldboard, when the screw 25 is-rotated by means of the boX Spanner 36 in the desired direction, causing the wedge 30 to he inserted between the bottom face of the moldboard and the roller 34 whereby the share is tightly held in position. In removing the share the screw 25 is operated to withdraw the wedge 30 from engagement with the roller 34 whereupon thecatch member can be withdrawn and the share removed.
The means which I preferablyv employ to secure the several brackets, angles and the like to the moldboard, standard and lands ide consist of snap headed or countersunk rivets.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanyingspecilication and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention isl. In a plow and in combination, a moldboard having an orifice therethrough, a
wedge 30, which is alsor landside having a tapered recess near the front thereof, a wearing strip provided with a longitudinally extending recess in the front thereof, a share, a landside formed integral therewith, a tongue extending from the said share landside, a projection extending from the said share landside, the said share being provided with an orifice adapted to register with the orifice in the moldboard, a catch member designed to engage with the said orifices, such catch member being provided with a bifurcated end, a wedge member adapted to engage with the said catch member and means for operating the said wedge, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a plow and in combination, a moldboard having an orifice therethrough, a share having an orifice therethrough designed to'register with the orifice in the said'y moldboard, a catch member adapted to engage with the said orifices, such catch member being provided with a bifurcated end, a roller rotatably mounted in the said bifurcated end, a wedge member adapted to engage with the back of the moldboard and the said roller and means for operating the said wedge, as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a plow and in combination, a moldboard having an orifice therethrough, a share having an orifice therethrough designed to register with the orifice in the said moldboard, a catch member adapted to engage with the said orifice, such catch member being provided with a bifurcated end, a roller rotatably mounted in the said bifurcated end, a wedge member adapted to engage with the back of the moldboard and the said roller and means for operating the said wedge comprising a bracket, a sleeve mounted on the said bracket, a screw rotatably mounted in said sleeve and adapted to make threaded engagement with the said wedge and means for limiting the longitudinal movement of the said screw, as and for the purpose specified.
In witness I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
WALTER ALEXANDER STEWART.
