Leners Patent Np. 84,128, dazed Nambe 17, 1868. d
'IMI-novara wams-SUPPORTER The Schedule refer-.red to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.- v
' Be it known that 1,-J0HN -Mseorrrm of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis, and Stateof Missouri, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Intra- Vaginal Redresser andSupporter of theflffomb-Inversions; and I do hereby declare that tliefollowing is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference rnarkedthereon. The object of this invention is to produce an instrument for relressing and supporting the womb, when misplaced, either by anteversion or retroversion.
The instrument consists of a couple of' curved rods,
` hinged together in their central part, and secured at through an externa-l supporter, to which it is attached by means of a set-screw. This external supporter is to be secured tothe person of the patient by means of bands or straps'attached thereto, and passing around W'hen secured in this manner, the instr-,ornent may be worn until the uterus shall have resumed itsV natural healthy position.
To enable those skilled in the art tornake and use my improved instrument, I'will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure 'l of the drawing, is a side elevationof the instrnrnent Figure 2 is a plan of the same, without the external suppoiter; and
Figure 3 is a rear-end elevation.
Two rods, .A B, curved upward at their forward ends, so as to readily enter the vagina, are. coupled together near their central part, by Ameans vof the pivot-pin a; around which said pivot the two rod's may be opened The'superior `rod A passes through a .mortise in the bottom part of the external supporter, C, and is secured thereto by means of an adjustable set-screw, c, the arrangement being such that the rods r B may be moved farthery in or out, and secured in position bythe setscrew c, just as may be desired.
A screw, D, is pivoted at d to the rod B, and passes up through a slot in the back end of therod A, as shown best in iig. 2. A thumb-nut, d', on the said screw D, engages the end of the rod A, and moves it up or Vdown with it. By having a slot in the end of the rod A, for the reception ot" the screw, as above described, and at the saine time having. the lower end of the screw pivoted at d, the said screw may easily be thrown back clear of the end of the rod A, during the adjustment of the instrument, thereby greatly facilitating the adjustment. Y
A small plate, b,'is attached to the forward end of the rod B, the curvature and adiustment of the said rod and plate being suclr'as to render them readily applicable to the posterior sidc of the anterior lip of the uterus. The forward end of the rod A has teeth or claws, al, arranged to shutdown on the plate b, and, when `inserted in the vagina of the patient, with the pla-te b adjusted. to the anterior lip of the uterus, as above described, the claws c' will be closed down upon the plate h,'holding, between them and it, the anterior lip of the'uterus, and then the thumb-screw nut d' willl be set down, so as to hohl the rods A B in this position, with the lip ofthe womb held firmly between a and b. The mouth of the womb may then be moved forward or backward, as desired, and held in the adjusted'position by the rods A B, which are then to be secured in position by the set-screw c.
The external supporter, C, is held up to the lower part of the abdomen, resting against the pelvic viscere; by means 'of straps or bands, (not shown,) passing around the person of the patient. v
Having described my invention,
What I claim, is-- .1. The instrument herein described, consisting ofthe curved rods A B, having their forwardends provided with the plate 11 and claws a', and pivoted together means of the pin a, substantially in the manner and .or
the purpose described and set forth. f
2. The instrument 'A B, in combination witl1`,`the external supporter C, as described and shown.
3. The arrangement of the adjusting-screw D, by pivoting it to the rod B, and-- sliding itin a slot in the end of the rod A, as described and set forth.
