VALVE-DRESSING- TOOL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MoCoLLUM, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and tate of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve- Dressing Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valve dressing tools and it has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and compact device of the character indicated constructed in such manner as to accuratelydress and true valves of the type ordinarily employed in internal combustion engines.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device of the character indicated in which certain of the parts are readily interchangeable to adapt the device for use in conjunction with valves of varying lengths, of varying diameters and having stems of varying diameters.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.

in the drawing 5 designates a supporting base block that is bored longitudinally at 6 for the reception of the shank 7 of a cutter head 8. The cutter head has a concave front face forming recess 9, the wall of which is inclined and carries cutter blades 10 which conform in inclination to the wall and the cutting faces of which complementally provide a tapering seat adapted to conform substantially to the taper face 11 of the valve 12. The shank 7 is tubular in form as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 and is internally threaded at 13 for the reception of the eX- ternally threaded portion 14 of a removable and interchangeable adaptenbushing 15.

The internal diameter of the bushing 15 may, by proper selection of the adapter, be caused to snugly conform to the external diameter of the portion 16 of the valve stem 1'? and consequently the valve may be very accurately centered with respect to the head 8.
The base 5 is provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings 18 any one of which is adapted to receive a pin 19 which projects downwardly from the underside of a thrust block 19'. The block 19 is pro vided with a recess 20 upon its rear face in which antifriction bearing devices such as balls 21 are located. A washer 22 is adapted to have a bearing against balls 21 it being understood that this washer encircles the valve stem 17 and that a pin 28 is passed transversely through the usual opening 24 of the valve stem, said pin bearing against the washer 22 and in turn thrusting said washer against the balls 21 as will be presently set forth. The base 5 carries a bearing projection 25 in which the shank 26 of a crank 27 is adapted to have a hearing. The inner end of the shank 26 is forked at 28 for engagement with a pin 29 which spans the bore 30 of a removable, interchangeable coupling 31. The forward end of this cou pling is adapted to fit over the rear end of the valve stem 17 and is slotted at 32 to engage the projecting end of the pin 24 so that rotation of the shank 26 by the crank 27 will result in imparting rotation to the valve. For causing the valve to bear with the desired degree of pressure against the cutting blades means are provided for moving the cutter head longitudinally. These means comprise the nut 33 that is provided with a plurality of openings 84 for the reception of a pin or other actuating implement, not shown, which nut engages upon a reduced and threaded extension of the shank 7, indicated, at 85 and the nut lies within a slotted portion 36 of the base 5. It is therefore clear that rotation of the nut will result in imparting endwise movement to the shank 7 and will move the head 8 toward or from the base 5 according to the direction of rotation of said nut. If the head 8 be moved away from the base it is apparent that it will tend to carry the valve bodily to the right and this will bring the washer 22 forcibly against the balls 21. These balls and the washer 22 constitute a thrust bearing to relieve the friction at that point and to permit all of the energy expended by the operator to be employed in useful work, namely causing the cutter blades to accurately dress and true the working face of the valve.
Since the pin 8 may be placed in any one of the openings 18 it is manifest that the valve stems varying considerably in length may be handled by this tool. The capability of bodily moving the thrust bearing endwise with respect to the base coupled with the fact that considerable throw may be given the head 8 renders it possible to not only treat the valves having stems of varying lengths but renders it possible to treat valves of varying diameters, since a valve of smaller diameter than that shown in Fig. 2 may be treated, because it will contact with the cutter blades even though it may lie closer to the bottom of the recess than a larger valve would lie. Since it is manifest that wabbling of the valve during the time that it is being turned would prevent accurate truing of the same it is manifest that the interchangeable adapter-bushings perform' a highly useful function. These adapter-bush.- ings are slotted at 15 to permit of their being engagedby a tool and unscrewed. Thus bushings having bores of varying diameters may be employed and a bushing may be se lected, the internal diameter of which snugly conforms to the diameter of the valve stem at-that point.
It will further be seen that the couplings 31 are interchangeable so that a coupling may be selected, the internal diameter of whose forward portion will snugly conform to the diameter of the rear end of the valve stem. The tool herein shown and described provides a structure by means of which a valve may be accurately dressed and trued and rendered as good as new with less than half a dozen revolutions of the crank.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth but that includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come within either the terms or the spirit of the appended claims. 7
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. A device of the character described comprising a supporting base, a cutter head, means for shifting the cutter head longitudinally with respect to the base, a thrust hearing carried by the base and an element adapted to be engaged by a valve stem and to in turn engage the thrust bearing.
2. A structure as recited in claim 1 wherein said thrust bearing is longitudinally adjustable with respect to the base.
3. A. device of the character described comprising a supporting base, a cutter head block carried by the base and having an opening for the passage of a valve stem therethrough, a member adapted to encircle said valve stem and bear against said thrust bearing and means for rotating the valve stem and valve.
4. The combination with a supporting base and a cutter head carried thereby, an abutment, means for imparting movement to the head with respect to the abutment, a member adapted to encircle a valve stem and to have a bearing against said abutment, a transversely extending element passing through the valve stem and bearing against said member, a crank, a bearing carried by the base for said crank and a coupling adapted to connect said crank to said transversely extending element.
5. A device of the character described comprising a supporting base, a cutter hea'd having a tubular stem slidably mounted in a bore of said base and having an externally threaded portion and a nut threaded upon said portion and means for holding said nut against endwise movement with respect to the base.
6. A device of the character described comprising a supporting base, a cutter head, carrying a. plurality of inclined cutters which complementally form a tapered recess, a tubular stem carried by said head, a removable adapter bushing for said stem, a thrust bearing and means for longitudinally adjusting said thrust bearing with respect to the base.
7. A structure as recited in claim 6 in combination with a thrust bearing having a pin projecting from its bottom there being aplurality of longitudinally spaced openings in the base for the reception of the pin.

In a device of the character described, a rotative manually operable member, a tubular member, means for connecting said members for rotation together and a pin adapted to traverse a valve stem, there being notches formed in the forward end of said tubular member for engagement with said 9. In a device of the character described the combination with a thrust bearing having anti-friction members in its rear face, of a washer adapted to encircle a valve stem and to bear against said anti-friction members, a pin adapted to traverse the valve stem and to bear against the rear face of said washer and means adapted to engage said pin for'imparting rotation to the valve stem.
10. A structure as recited in claim 9 in combination with a cutter head and means for shifting said cutter head toward and from the thrust bearing.
11. A structure as recited in claim 9 in combination with a cutter head, a removable adapter-bushing carried by said cutter head and means for shifting said cutter head longitudinally with respect to the thrust bearin 12. l structure as recited in claim 9 in combination with a cutter head having a stem with an externally threaded portion, a nut threaded thereon, means for holding the nut from endwise movement and means for imparting rotation to valve and valve stem when said valve is mounted in the tool.
