UNITED STATES PATENT ortica ROY STOUGAARD, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGOR TO PACKARD MOTOR CAR COM- u PANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN VALVE RESEATING TOOL Application filed yl'eeember 16, 1927. Serial No. 240,359.
y f rlihis invention relates to devices for Vgrindingvalve seats. l
In the manufacture of cylinder blocks ther cylinders together with their respective valve vip0rtsgare cast in block. Guide holes are drilled and reamed normalto the topv face of thelolock and guides are then pressed in and accurately reamed for the reception ofv valve stems.'y A cutting tool is mounted for rotation on amandrel which snuglyhts the valve stemguide to cut the valve seat con.
centric andnormal tothe'valve stem guide, thus when the valve is installed it fits the seat perfectly. The cylinder block and valve Stem guide are castironvvhich is subjected to seasoning `when heated, and during the seasoning the texture ofthe metal changes. This sometimes causes the valvey seats to warp but more often the valvek stern yguide will warp zei and `change its'position slightly, so that itis no longer in proper alinement with the valve seat. In order to rcorrect these evils, the valve should be reseated by lmaking the seat concentric and normal 'to the new position of the guide, and
'3 it is the aiml of the present invention to provide a device for this purpose.
An object of the invention is to provide a device for cutting valve seats concentric and Anormal to the axis of the valve stem Another object of the invention is to pro.- 4vide a device for cutting valve seats which can vbe easily and quickly adjusted and will efficiently perform its intended function.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device for cutting and. finishing a valve seatvvhichy can be quickly centered in a valve stem'k guide and so supported for operation that it will maintain its alinement.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide a 'device for cutting valve seatswhich has the advantage of a positive action in cutting valve seats concentric and normal to the valve stem guides, a device which is highly '455 eiiiecient in operation, yet of marked simplicity as a' whole and in respect to each of its component parts, so that its manufacture .is economically facilitated both as regards to parts and their assembly.
Other objects of the invention will appear invention invan operative' position on a cylin- 55 der block of an interna-l combustion engine, a portion of thecylindcr block heilig broken away. f
F ig. 2 is a view taken substantially on line 2 2 of F ig. 1 With parts inscction, and
Fig. 3 is a view taken substantially on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, the cylinder block being omitted.
f Referring by numerals to the drawings, 10 represents the cylinder block of an internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders 11 together with inlet ports 12 a nd exhaust ports 13. The ports are provided with the usual valve seat 1.11 and have positioned therein valve stem guides r15. The cylinder block has threaded into its upper :face a number of studs-16 for securing in position a cylinder head, not shown. f
A tapered mandrel 17 having a cylindrical head 18 is fitted into the guide 15 aud made secure by any suitable means, such as by a nut, not shown, threaded upon the lower end of the mandrel. A split sleeve or bushing 19 is lit-ted upon the head of the mandrel and secured in place by a lock nut 20. This sleeve provides a bearing for a cutting or finishing tool 21. As shown, the tool is a rose cutter of the usual type having its teeth ground to the proper angle to cut the valve seat face as indicated at 14. The cutting tool is centrally bored as indicated at 22 and is mounted to rotate freely on the bushing 19 and is provided in its upper face with recesses or sockets 23, the object of which will hereinafter appear.v
Positioned upon the face of the cylinder block is a support having a hase 24 provided With a slot 25 for the reception. of the stud bolts :16 in the upper face of the cylinder block. As shown, the base is substantially semi-circular and is provided with an arm 2G inclined from the perpendicular and bifurcated vat the'base, as indicated at 27, to permit theinsertion of a ywrench 28. The wrench has a handle 29 for the manipulation thereof and an enlarged portion 30 internally threadtically disposed bore .32.
ed to receivethe threads on the stud bolts 16 by means of which the base is clamped in position. The upper or free end of the arm 26 is provided with a boss 31 having a ver- Mount'edfto reciprocate fandto2- r'ota'te in the bore 32 is a hollow shaft 33 having@ handle 31 forrthe manipulation thereof, a coupling "and" an 'adjustable sleevaor collar 36, the"'coll'arbeing adaptdto bear upon the upper face of the boss 31 to limit the downward movement of the "shaft, the
obj ect of which willv hereinafter appear. The coupling 35 has a central bore 37 vand a vcounter bore .33 '-forr'nedfto' provide aw socket for the reception off a 'head 39, the yconnec-u tion beingzin fthe'nature ofa universal joint,`
and afpin 40 `is provided-t0'preventrfotary movement between the parts. The'heady -39 is adapted to bear upon thefupp'erface of the -f cutting tfool 21 and "is providedwith arecess i tions in'fthe alin'ement of the shaftwith t 4:1 forv the reception of the head of the man.
