This invention relates to a device for refinishing seats in fluid fiow control valves.
A type of such valve in extensive use comprises a body providing integrally a flat annular seat for cooperating with a closure member urged axially against the seat, and provided with a seat engaging surface formed, for example, of hard fiber.
Such seats often become out, pitted or otherwise damaged as an incident to use of the valve so that the closure member is no longer eiTective'to close the valve tightly, or at least is subject to injury by the damaged seat so as to require frequent renewals.
It is an object of this invention to provide a simple and inexpensive tool for resurfacing such seats; which may be employed while the valve is in place in the line; and which may be employed successfully without requiring especial skill on the part of the user.
It is another object of this invention to provide a tool wherein proper facing of the seat is assured without requiring the removal of an excessive amount of material from the seat.
It is another object of this invention to provide a tool having a novel form of universal connec- .tion for mounting the cutting head.
This invention possesses many other advantages, and has other objects which may be made more clearly apparent from a consideration of one embodiment of the invention. For this purpose there is shown a form in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification. The form will now be described in detail illustrating the general principles of the invention; but it is to be understood that this detailed description is not to be taken in a limiting sense, since the scope of this invention is best defined by the appended claims.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawing, the tool is shown as comprising a head I having ,a cutting face 2 thereon, formed as by a hardened steel insert or file plate 3, resembling a short section of a file, to form a filing or abrading surface. The opposite side edges of the insert, as clearly shown in Fig; 3' are slightly converging. Thus,

A shank or stem member 4 having a non-circular end portion 4-11. serves to manipulate'the head i. For this purpose, the non-circular portion -a of the shank 4'may be engaged by a-bit brace 6 shown in broken lines in Fig. 1, of a.
wrench (not shown), or even a door knob form of handle as indicated at I may be used;
Means 8 for locating and guiding the shank 4 is provided, comprising a cylindrical member having a bore 9 for rotatably accommodating'the shank l. The guide member 8 is detachably retained in the shank 4 as by having'the'bore-l? stepped as indicated at 9-a, the step S-a being confined against a shoulder II) on the shank 4 by a spring pressed detent II carried by the shank. Sufiicient axial force exerted in opposite directions on the member 8' and the shank 4 will serve to depress the detent I I and allow the guide member 3 to be slipped off the shank. Since member 8 is detachable, it may be replaced by a member of different outside diameter to fit different sizes of valves. 7 An important feature of the device is the universal connection provided at I2 connecting the head I and the shank 4, which in addition to permitting universal motion between the head I and the shank 4, permits ready removal and at tachment of the head from and to the shank.
As'shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the shank Sis provided with a circular recess I3 into which a projection I4 on the head extends. This projection has a cross slot I4-a with anopening I441 of reduced width. A pin I5 fixed in the shank 4 extends diametrally across the recess I3, and carries a spiral spring l6 having an inside diameter somewhat greater than the diameter of the pin I5 and an outside diameter greater than the width of the opening I4-b, but such that the spring may be accommodated in the slot I4-a. From an inspection of Fig. 2, it will be clear that the head I has limited freedom to rock relative to shank 4 in the plane of the paper about the pin I5, and that due to the clearance between the spring I6 and the pin I5, and between the spring I-6 and the slot I i-a, the head I can also rock in a plane perpendicular to the paper. Thus, universal movement between the head and the shank is permitted. Further, by exerting axial force urging the head I away from the shank, the
reduced opening H-b distorts the circular cross section of the spring l6 so that the spring passes through the opening, allowing the head to be separated'fro'm the shank.
Conversely, the head may be attached tothe' seat 2|. The closure member, valve stem, bonnet;
etc., have been removed to permit the seat 2| to be faced, it being understood that these .parts are assembled on the body by threadingthebonnet- (not shown), on the body neck 22.
