PATENT QF'FH QE.
DAVID H. BROWDER, O F LAWRENCEVILLE, VIRGINIA.
-IPIPE BEAT/KER.
Application filed February l1,-1922.- Serial N0.'535,876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID H. BnowoER, a citlzen of the United States, residing at Lawrenceville, inthe county of Brunswick and-State of Virginia, have invented new anduseful Improvements in Pipe Reamers,
of which the following is a specification.
In injectors for locomotives, etc., it is absolutely necessary that a fluid tight jointbe providedloetweenthe injector and the pipes connected thereto. Therefore the jointsvbetween the bosses or nipples of the injector and the pipes therefor are ground, the bosses or nipples having their ends flarediin one direction and the pipes having their ends flared in an opposite direction, while unions are provided for connecting the-pipesand nipples. Becauseof the necessary accurate contacting engagement of the pipe with the boss-or nipple .care mustbe taken in grind- 1 ing or facingthe joints therebetween, and; in the majority of instances'it is necessary toreinovetheinjector.infacing the bosses or nipples thereof.
The primary object of the present invention is to produce a tool for facing the joints between an in ector andthe pipesconnected therewith, which can be readily secured on the in ector wlthout the removal thereof and which likewise can be readily secured on the pipes to be connected to theinjector,,;and wherein the joints ofthese members can be faced in an easy, accurate and expeditious manner without unnecessary physical exertion.
, It is a further object to produce afacing tool for joints of injectors and pipes connected thereto which shall include means for clamping the same on the injector or on the pipe, a frame. being secured on. said clamping means and having ranged on the fra1ne,;and in contact with the cutter head there is a feed element ad-.
justable onthe frame to, direct the headto its work.
A still further object is to produce a facing tool for this purpose characteristic of simplicity in construction, lightness in weight and ease and accuracy in operation.
The foregoing, and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative j ournaled thereto a shaft to which the cutter head is connected, a removable handle being pro-= vided for operating the shaft, while, ar-.
association of parts such as is disclosed by thedrawings which accompany and which formpart of this specification.
In the drawing:
-Figure lis. an elevation illustrating :the application of theimprovement.
Figure 2 is a similar view taken at right angles to the showing in Figure l, .the handle for the shaft being removed.
Figure 3is a sectional view approximately ontheline 33 ofFigure 2.
I Figure 4c is a bottom plan view of the improvement.
1 Figure 5 is a side elevation of one of the cutter heads.
1' Figure 6 is a sectional view of. a joint betweentheboss or nipple of. an injector. and the pipe therefor.
; Referringnow to the drawings in detail, the numeral. 1 designates 1 a shaft- -which passes centrally through a rounded opening provided in a substantially U-shaped frame 2. The outer end of the shaft 1 is squared for the reception of the socket end of a removable handle 3. fThe inner end of the shaft 1 is reduced and threaded, as at 4: whereby thesame may have screwed thereon cutter heads 5 or 6. The-cutter heads are round in plan, the cutter head ahaving its active;face concaved andprovided with radial teeth which terminate a suitable distance awayfrom its center. The cutter head 6 hasits active face convex and provided with radial-teeth which also terminate away fromits center.
.The opening in the frame 2, through which the shaft 1 passes, isof a materially greater area than the cross sectional diameteiaof the shaft, the said opening being threaded, and screwed through the said openingv there is, a follower member 7 The follower is in the nature of an exteriorly threaded tube,-the bore of the said tube re ceiving: therethrough theshaft' 1, and providing a bearing for the said. shaft. The outer end of the follower isprovided with right .angularly arranged projections fornr ing the same with handles 8,.whereby the follower may be screwed through the frame to contact with the cutter head to force the same to its work.
The parallel arms of the inverted U- shaped frame 2 have their ends reduced, rounded and threaded. For distinction the reduced ends are indicated by the numeral 9, the same passing through openings in the ends of the clamp member 11 there is pivotally secured a link 16 which is also received in a slot or opening in one of the straight ends of the clamp member 13, a pivot 17 securing the link in the said end of the clamp member 13. In this manner the clamp members or sections 11 and 13 are hingeclly connected, and also in this manner the clamp section 13 may be swung outwardly to a position approximately parallel with the clamp member or section 11. The opposite straight end of the clamp member 11 has pivoted therein a bolt member 18 which is designed to be swung through a slot or opening 19 in the second end 1 1 of the clamp member or section 13. The bolt 18 is engaged by a winged nut 20 which, when adjusted will hold the clamp sections assembled and the same in tight engagement with the collar or sleeve which is brazed or welded on the end of a pipe 21, or on the boss or nipple 22 which is integrally formed with the injector. The boss or nipple 22 is provided with exterior threads, and the outer end of the enlargement on the pipe 21 is formed with an outwardly projecting flange. The outer end of this flange is designed to be engaged by the teeth on the cutter head 5, as disclosed in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing, while the outer end of the boss or nipple is faced by the cutter head 6.
The flange on the enlargement of the pipe 21 is designed to be contacted by th inner flanged end of the union which is screwed on the threaded boss or nipple to force the joints between the pipe and nipple to tight engagement.
The elements constituting my improvement may be readily separated to provide a small package for storage or shipment.
It is thought that the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawing will fully set forth the construction and operation of the improvement to those skilled in the art to which such invencutter heads will be positively arranged in Y proper position to operate on the pipe. The handle is turned by one hand of the operator, the other hand being employed for adjusting the follower 7. Vhen the joint is faced, the follower is turned in a reverse direction which permits of the shaft and the cutter head carried thereby being moved away from the joint. The threads on the end 4: of the shaft are pitched in the direction of the turning of the handle 3., so that such turning, when the cutter head is in operative position will have the effect of screwing the said cutter head more tightly v on the handle.
Having described the invention, I claim 1. A reamer comprising a pair of complementary clamp sections adapted to embrace one end of a tubular member to be reamed, means for locking the sections together on the tubular member, a U-shaped element having its ends passing transversely through the ends of one of the clamp sections, nuts threaded upon the ends of the U-shaped member, an adjusting member threaded through the crest of the U-shaped member and having a central bore, a shaft rotatable and slidable in the bore of the adjusting member, and a reamer element carried by the end of the shaft.
2. A reamer comprising a pair of hingedly connected clamp sections adapted to embrace one end of a tubular member" to be reamed, means for locking the sections together on and about a tubular member, a U-shaped element fixedat its ends to and extending at right angles from the end portions of one of theclamp sections and having a central threadedaperture, a central tubular and exteriorly threaded member disposed in said aperture, a shaft rotatable and movable reotilinearly in said tubular member, and a reamer element carried at the inner end of the shaft.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
DAVID H. BROWDER.
