IMPROVEMENT IN BIT-STOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,790, dated November 5, 1872.
, drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the devices for holding a bit-brace for boring at an angle firmly at the desired angle, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a side view of my improved bitbrace, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of thejoint in the same, with the devices for holding it firmly at the desired angle.
A and B represent the two parts of the brace connected by a universal joint, 0, and the part B provided with a chuck, D, for holding the bit. These parts may be constructed in any desired manner, as I do not confine myself to any particular construction of the same. On the part A is placed loosely the cast-metal handle E, near the upper end of which is a curved projecting arm, G, provided with a longitudinal rib, a, on its concave side. From the opposite side of the handle E is another projecting arm, H, which is straight and forms a guard for the thumb of the operator to press against. On the part B, immediately below the joint 0, is placed a loose collar, I,from
which extends a curved and slotted arm, J,
arm J is passed a screw,'c, which passes also through a hole in the outer end of the arm G,
and fastened on the outside thereof bya thumbnut, d.
By this means it will readily be seen that the brace may be set at any desired angle and fastened firmly by the thumb-nut d, so that there will be no trouble for the operator in holding it steady.
The arms G H need not be cast with the handle E, but may be made separate-that is, cast with a separate collar placed on the brace at the end of the handle. Neither is the rib a on the arm G absolutely necessary, as any suitable device may be employed for holding the arms G and J on each other.
This bit-brace may also be used for straight boring, the same as any ordinary brace.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the bifurcated bitshanks A B, connected by the ball-joint G, the
curved arms G J and sct-screwc d for adjust ing and holding the bit-shank B on a straight line or at an angle from the bit-shank A, substantially in the manner as shown and described, and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of August, 1872.
